House of Mary & the Temple of Artemis
DEPARTURE : 2pm
RETURN TO THE SHIP BY 5pm
The afternoon excursion is optional and will depart Le Lyrial at 2pm. You will return to Selcuk to visit the remaining two significant
historical buildings - the Virgin Mary’s House followed by the Temple of Artemis.
According to Predominant Christian tradition, Mary was brought to Ephesus by the Apostle John after the Resurrection of Christ
and lived out her days there.
The Temple of Artemis, was built in honor of the Greek Goddess of hunting, wild nature and fertility and is deemed as one of the
seven wonders of the ancient world. The temple of Artemis used to be the largest marble temple in the ancient Greek World since it
was four times as big as the Parthenon in Athens, Greece. The temple served as both a marketplace and religious institution.
The offerings made by thousands of Pilgrims each year enabled the temple to grow so wealthy that it became the world’s first bank.
Today, little remains of the magnificent structure, however it still remains an important site to visit in order to complete your visit to
this area.

LA was born amidst great history and civilizations.
They carry the impressions of their rich culture and history into modern times. They combine the land, water and the climate of the
Aegean region with their love and patience and present a unique world full of different tastes. From Idol Wines to LA Wines
Lucien Arkas, CEO of Arkas Holding, operating in sea transport and logistics, has bought Idol Wines in 2010 and changed the
company name to LA Wines. The company founded in 2004 with an investment of 24 million TL, aimed to produce quality wines
with fair prices for the consumers in the domestic market. LA Project was founded with a dream to produce wines to world
standards in Aegean lands which have been the cradle of wine and viticulture for hundreds of years.
LA Vineyards
The largest vineyard in Turkey on a single lot has been established on 1,168 acres in Torbalı of Izmir. Wine grape species such as
Tempranillo, Chenin Blanc, Viognier, Marselan, Trebbiano, Ugni Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Musket, are
most suitable to the soil and climate conditions of the Aegean, although some of these species have never been planted in Turkey
before, but they have been selected to be planted in LA Vineyards. The grapes have been started by using organic viticulture
methods for the first time in Turkey in order to preserve the original fruit characteristics.
LA Vineyards have raised their grapes without using any hormones, synthetic chemical pesticides and fertilizers opting to use
organic viticulture methods instead. Thus, they have managed to preserve the original fruit aromas generated by the grape terroir
in a natural way.
