history
The first people began settling in Ephesus around 3000 BC, starting a stream of settlers into the area. The Romans conquered the area in
the second century AD, and Byzantines, Venetians and Genoeses all claimed the area prior to the Middle Ages.
The Ottomans added the district to their holdings in the early 1400’s. The city remained Turkish, a stint of Turkish building began, lending the
city its unique architectural style. The island served as a sea patrole for the surrounding region. Kusadası is famous with her castle which is
constructed over the Pigeon Island which gave the town it name meaning the Bird’s Island, built to protect residents from pirates.
Kusadasi remained a typical, unspoiled farming and fishing region until about twenty-five years ago when the city became very popular with
yachters. Today’s Kusadasi retains its unique, down to earth character, but also plays host to vacationers from around the world. Boasting
a new, modern marina built specifically for high end tourists and shops and restaurants galore, Kusadasi is the ideal destination for

Ephesus is the most ancient city in the world, founded in 3000
B.C., it houses one of the best collections of remains dating from
Roman and early Christian times. It was the second largest city of

Shrine. Ephesus has a very special place in the history of
Christianity as a city where St. Paul once preached.
The House of Virgin Mary
Tradition states that Virgin Mary accompanied by St John came to
Ephesus at the end of her life. In 1967 Pope VI claimed the site
authentic and each year a traditional service celebrated by the
religious clergy, honors Mary’s Assumption into heaven.
