SilTite® GC Connections
Column connections in the GC
have traditionally suffered from
unreliability, leaks, excessive dead
volumes and lack of inertness,
leading to poor chromatography
results and instrument down time.
SGE Analytical Science SilTite®
GC Connections are designed to
minimize installation time and
provide ongoing, robust connections
throughout the life of the GC column.
•Easy to install and leak-free
• Superb operational stability
•Low dead volume
Using SilTite GC Connections means
less time on maintenance, and more
time to focus on your analysis!
• Chemically inert
Injection Port
Issues
•Having to retighten Graphite Vespel ferrules due to thermal cycling of the oven.
•Difficulty setting the GC column at the same depth into the injection port liner each
and every time.
•Introduction of graphite particles into the system and maintaining system cleanliness.
•Leaks introduced due to porous sealing materials.
•Needing to use wrenches to create good seals.
®
SilTite FingerTite INJ
Solutions
The SilTite FingerTite ferrule system eliminates the need for wrenches. The FingerTite
nut is designed to seal under finger force, can never be over-tightened or break the
GC column.

The setting tool included in the starter kit enables pre-setting of the ferrule onto the
GC column outside of the GC oven, ensuring repeatable setting of the column relative
to the injection port liner every time.

Peak Tailing
Q. Our peaks are tailing, how can we avoid this?
Low Response
A. There are several possible causes, incorrect column
installation (remove the first meter of the column; then
re-install the column making sure that it is held securely
by the ferrule, and recheck it), the liner may be active
(replace the liner with a clean, deactivated liner), the
column may be active (try a new column), or it may be
the wrong type column for the analysis (the phase film
thickness may be too low, or a particular type of phase
may be required).
Split Peaks
A.The column or liner may be active, remove the first
meter of column; recheck; and replace column if
necessary. Replace the liner with a clean, deactivated
liner. The detector gas flows may not be correct,
check and re-adjust them if necessary. Make sure
that the standards and samples concentrations have
been calculated correctly, and that the standards and
samples have been diluted correctly. Check for leaks at
both the injector and the detector end of the column,
and re-tighten all connections if necessary.
Q. We have split peaks, what can we do?
A. This could be caused by a poorly cut column inlet, or a
small fragment of graphite ferrule lodged in the inlet of
the column (remove the first meter of the column; then
re-install the column and recheck it). Other possible
causes are poor injection technique, more than one
solvent being injected, or by a lack of resolution. Refine
your injection technique and use only one injection
solvent. If you suspect that there is a lack of resolution,
change the temperature program, try a longer column,
one with a smaller inside diameter, or a different phase.
Q.We are getting a lower than expected response
(peak area) for specific peaks. What could be
causing this?
High Bleed
Q.We are seeing high column bleed. What should be
we check?
A.Check published maximum temperature of the column
and make sure that this hasn’t been exceeded. Check
the carrier flow rates / velocity, make sure that they
are correct for column inside diameter and length and
adjust them if necessary. Make sure that the column has
not moved in detector. Is the ferrule holding it securely?
Check for leaks, and re-tighten all connections if
necessary. Check that the oxygen filter is not spent
– replace it if necessary. Make sure that the detector
temperature is higher than final column temperature
if possible. Check cleanliness of detector and clean it if
necessary. Cut 50 cm from the front end of the column
and recondition column.

Description
§ Each starter kit includes all the parts necessary to convert one GC system (one injector and one detector) to the SilTite FingerTite system suitable for installing 0.1-0.25 mm ID capillary columns.
In addition there are five SilTite FingerTite nuts, ten 0.4 mm ID SilTite FingerTite ferrules, and a ferrule install tool which allows you to seat the ferrule in the correct position on the capillary column.
GC Column Connectors
40 ºC
Issues
•Poor connectors joining retention gaps, transfer lines or a second dimensional column
to an analytical column are a potential source for band broadening and activity.
•Popular glass press-fit connectors are prone to leaking, especially at high temperatures.
•Conventional unions leak during column temperature programming.
•The presence of dead volume in GC column connectors contributes to peak tailing.
