Characterized by Expressiveness
CREATIVITY
 The look, feeling, personality, should be about the
t
team
 Ask yourself: Do I see them in the solution?
 Do I see the group as a unit? Do I see
individuals being represented?

CREATIVITY
 An individual has the ability to create a mental

 Is it something they’ve seen before that they are
regurgitating? Teach the to tell the difference!
 Want to take the ideas they’ve seen before and
synthesize them and make something new
Extends Beyond Natural Limits
CREATIVITY
 In Order for you to know what the natural limits are,
you need a baseline of your team
 What skills do they have? What do they bring to
the team?
 Do ICs, Team Builders and watch them to see
where they are at
 As a TM: want to push your team to go beyond what
they know how to do and go further
 Tough territoryterritory teams may want to give up,
up but
you want to push them to do something out of
their comfort zone
 Get permission at beginning of the year to not
let them give up

• Ask yourself: what am I elaborating for? Who is

• If the is too much you can’t take it all in…kids
need the opportunity to see the details
Originality
CREATIVITY
• Originality is not:
• Cute,
C t neat,

• It can be sloppy but original
• We are looking for something unique, one of a
kind
• Ask yourself: what are the differentiating
factors? What makes this different from other
things that we
we’ve

other teams are doing?
• Often times this comes from combining
things to make something new

What is it?
2013
Creative Process
• Describes the learning processes involved in solving a
Destination Imagination Challenge
• Emphasizes the process over the product

– i.e. “utilize convergent and divergent thinking”
• All-inclusive view of the benefits of participation in Destination
Imagination
What it’s not…
• A checklist to be completed
• A step-by-step,
step by step linear process
• Designed to constrict thinking methods
• A set of rules that must be followed

• Is it working?
• How would someone score this according to the Challenge?
Scoring as Assessment
Assess
• Scores are referenced to the Challenge
• Use the Reward Point section like a rubric for assessing your
work
• Be sure to meet/exceed the expectations of the scored element
– If it has to move 10 ft. be sure it moves 10 ft. – not 9 ½ ft.
– Scored on creativity – then be sure it’s creative
• For the purpose of solving the Challenge, use the Reward Points
to help guide your planning. Prioritize the solution – heavily
scored elements should receive lots of attention
