Weighting of Grades

Weighting of Grades
Teachers have traditionally weighted assessments (tests and quizzes) more heavily than non-assessments
(homework and classwork). This year we are using Edline to streamline and standardize the weighting
process.
This school year middle school and high school teachers will all use the fixed weights of 75% for
assessments and 25% for non-assessments. Elementary teachers will weight assessments at 70% and nonassessments at 30%.
In Edline there are three subtotals: one for assessments, one for non-assessments (homework/classwork),
and one for the quarter subtotal. The weighted grade is the quarter subtotal under “Grd” which is circled
below and shows up on the Edline grading report for your child.
Therefore, you do not have to find the weighted grade; however, if you want to calculate the grade
yourself, follow the directions in the next paragraph.
Below is an example of a student report with the 75% and 25% breakdown. If you want to find the weighted
grade, take the assessment subtotal and multiply it by .75. Then take the homework/classwork subtotal and
multiply it by .25, and add those two totals together. It gives you the weighted average to that point. Again,
this will change as grades are added. You cannot take the assessment subtotal and the homework/classwork
subtotal and simply add them together because they are not weighted.

Non-Assessment Subtotal x .25 = 84.6 x .25 = 21.2
Add the two totals together to get the weighted grade = 67.9 + 21.2 = 89.1 =
