including two Airbus A320s with the longest list of previous registrations that we have ever seen in this column. Skywest Airlines’ FNP was built during 1993 and delivered to Orix Leasing who leased it to Airtours International during the British summer and various other airlines during the northen winter. As a result it changed markings almost every year before returning to Airtours as G-BYTH and has ended up with 14 previous identities before coming to Australia. Strategic Airlines’ YQB followed the same patten being built during 1992 and leased by ILFC primarily to Monarch Airlines of Luton, England, during the English summer and Air Canada during Britain’s colder months. It also saw service in Ireland and with Madala Airlines in Indonesia before coming to Australia with 12 previous identities. The local warbird scene has increased dramatically with six more Singapore Air Force SIAI Marchetti S211 jet trainers joining the register from the stock of twenty aircraft stored at Jandakot. There are now ten aircraft still awaiting civil markings. Although listed as a new allocation Angus Larard’s Hawker Fury ORN is not new to Australian skies having previously flown here as HFX. The Fury was delivered to the Iraqi Air Force during September 1949 and flew for almost thirty years before being retired and obtained, along with several others, by Ed Jurist and David Tallichet of Orlando, Florida. The Furies were issued with US civil registration but never flew in American and were stored in Orlando until several were imported into Australia. HFX was shipped to Darwin during January 1982 where Guido Zucoli spent three years bringing the Fury back to pristine condition for Bruce Andrews of Melbourne. Bruce flew the aircraft for six years, attending many air shows, before selling it to The Old Flying Machine Company at Duxford and shipping it to the UK during July 1991. After being built in the UK, delivered to Iraq, then storage in the US and restoration in Australia, then back to the UK, its next move was back to America for five months between November 2000 and April 2001 with Flying Ducks at Willmington, Delaware as N103FD. It then moved to South Africa where it has been flying as ZU-SEA before arriving back in Australia as ORN. K and S Cavalier EJJ is a low wing, two seat, tricycle undercarriage aircraft designed for the amateur constructor and made of spruce and plywood with fabric covered wing and control surfaces. The aircraft was developed from the Gardan Minicab by Norman McLeod from K and S Aircraft of Calgary, Canada. McLeod strengthened the frontal area in order to incorporate a nose wheel as well as a larger capacity engine, redesigned the tail into a swept version and added wing tip fuel tanks. The prototype first flew during 1969. There have been seven K and S Cavaliers built in Australia and New Zealand, three in Australia and four on the other side of the Tasman. The pendulum has now swung slightly in favour of Australia with one of the Kiwi machines now added to the local register. The aircraft in question was built by Gunter Barthel and registered in New Zealand as ZK-DJJ during April 1986. Now resident in Surfers Paradise Gunter has brought the Cavalier to Australia where it now flies as EJJ. Another expatriate Kiwi is Sydney Helicopters’ Aerospatiale Squirrel ENX. The helicopter started life as an AS350B and was delivered new to Air Supply Fukuoka at Honda Airport, Japan, as JA9886 in July 1990. Wing and Rotor Aviation of Auckland then obtained it on behalf of HTV New Zealand and it became ZK-HTV during January 1995. Eurocopter International Pacific bought it seven years later, reregistered it ZK-IAZ in May 2002 and sold it to Hele-Tranz three months later. It was converted to an AS350BA during September 2003 after Waimana Helicopters obtained it one month earlier. Now ENX it was imported by Atlantick Ltd of Granville, NSW, and is operated by Sydney Helicopters. The Grumman Ag-Cat is a very robust and capable aircraft but it has been overshadowed by more modern turbine powered aircraft with large hoppers in recent years so it is a surprise to see that Helen Nelligan has imported a Super Ag-Cat HQR. Designed by Grumman during the mid 1950s but built under license by Schweizer at Elmira, New York, the Ag-Cat is a bi-plane with a comparatively short fuselage of steel tube construction covered with mostly removable aluminium panels. Early aircraft had open cockpits and were powered by Continental radial engines but after 400 G-164 Ag-Cats were built the G-164A Super Ag-Cat was introduced with an enclosed cockpit, larger 300US gallon hopper and a choice of two engines, the 450hp or 600hp Pratt and Whitney radial. Over 1330 Super Ag-Cats were produced before Schweizer released the Ag-Cat B with a longer wing span, revised fin shape and a new spray bar system. Schweizer also developed several turbine versions of the Ag-Cat using the reliable Pratt and Whitney PT6 turboprop engine but these were largely unsuccessful with only around 70 being built. HQR is one of 841 Super Ag-Cat Bs produced and is one of 24 Ag-Cats still flying in Australia with four in New Zealand - one being a turbine powered conversion. Glenample Air was formed in 2007 and bought four new Robinson R44 Ravens to operate scenic flights along the Great Ocean Road and over the Twelve Apostles in Victoria. They added a used Raven II to their fleet during November 2008 and have now added a brand new Eurocopter EC130 to cope with increased charter work. Five aircraft are listed in the Returning to Register section this issue with four of these back on the register after being revoked by CASA. Comanche OYL has been off the register for three months, Baron HUG for three weeks, Robinson Beta two days and Kavanagh special shaped hot air balloon LUB was reinstated on the same day that it was cancelled. Walter Johanson’s Vans RV-3A-J has spent the last three months on the RA-Aus register but has now returned to the CASA register. The RV-3A designation indicates that the original wing has been modified to allow aerobatics with the “J” indicating other smaller modifications to the basic airframe and the aircraft is powered by a 160hp Lycoming engine. Of the 36 aircraft shown in the Deletions listing, one third have been exported, one third remain flying in Australia under different markings with the remaining third being damaged, revoked or withdrawn from use. Bell LongRangers BXJ and BYP have returned to the US where they have taken up their original American markings, N365LQ and N1471B, after less than twelve months on the local register. Both are now operated by Microseal in New York. Likewise the two Sikorsky S-76Cs, FLE and FLH, imported earlier this year by Flight Line Services at Cairns have been exported to Indonesia after less than two months in this country. Beech King Air TAM has returned to Awesome Aviation in South Africa where it now flies as ZS-LTZ which it wore before coming to Australia during December 2006. Schweizer 300CB KHU is now in New Zealand along with Virgin Blue Boeing 737 VUQ which is back with Pacific Blue as ZK-PBL. The other Virgin Blue Boeing 737 listed, VOG, is a little more complicated as it was entered onto the US register as N116MN but cancelled two days later being exported to Bermuda. Although now flying as VQ-BFZ it is operated by Russian airline Orenair with a second Virgin Boeing 737, VUH, likely to join it in the near future. Diamond Twin Star AJB has changed to UNA and will become the first Twin Star in the University of South Australia’s fleet along with six DA40 Diamond Stars acquired from Hawker Pacific earlier this year. Kawasaki BK117B BKS is now SLU reflecting its use by the Surf Life Saving Helicopter Rescue Service in Sydney and Beech 350 Super King Air ZHQ is now flying with the RAAF as A32-670. The Super King Air becomes the thirteenth of its type delivered to the RAAF with three more at the Hawker Pacific facility at Bankstown being prepared for delivery. Monnett Sonex CNZ, Jabiru J230C JLU and Slepcev Storch TZI have been transferred to the RA-Aus register with only the latter’s new markings not known yet. Several aircraft have been withdrawn from use for various reasons including Beech 58 Baron SQJ. After more than 20 years of twin engine training with the Singapore Flying College it has now been retired and donated to the TAFE College at Jandakot. It is now resident in the TAFE’s new hangar along with Cessna 340 III, American Champion Scout CFD, an unknown Robinson R22 and Beech 56TC Baron SUV. The Baron is one of only two 56TCs to be flown in Australia and both were used extensively for high level survey work. The latest acquisition by the TAFE College is Boeing 737 OBN/N732HV which arrived on April 24 and no doubt further details will be recorded elsewhere in this issue.
