AN HISTORIC VENUE
LIKE NO OTHER
O
pened in 1864, No.6 Kildare Street
has been home to the Royal College
of Physician of Ireland for over 150
years and has an unique collection of
artefacts and antiques which reflects the
rich history of the College.
An extensive and sympathetic
restoration project was undertaken,
2003-2006, which updated the building,
with audio visual and wi-fi facilities.
This project also created two modern
rooms on our lower ground floor - the
Winter Hall and the Lecture Theatre.
With these additions No. 6 can offer
the opulence and grandure of ages past
alongside modern lecture facilities.

To the right of the main entrance hall is the
Stearne Room, named for Dr John Stearne
(1624-1669), the founder of the College.
Of note in this room is the carved wooden
President’s chair, presented to the College
by Thomas Edward Beatty (1800-1872), in
1866, at the end of his term as President.
To the left of the window is an engraving
of King William and Queen Mary who
granted the College the 1692 Charter. When the building originally opened in
1864 this was the main hall for holding
important College events. It is decorated
with beautiful plasterwork, which includes
the monogram of Queen Victoria,
the reigning monarch at the time of
construction.
is the Dun’s Hospital table. Made of bog
oak this table use to be in the student
residence of Sir Patrick Dun’s Hospital. In
the nineteenth century it became a tradition
for student doctors to carve their name into
the table. When this table top became full, a
new top was provided to allow the practice
to continue. The tables contain the names
of several hundred Irish doctors, many who
became leaders in the profession. Corrigan Hall

THE STOKES ROOM
The Corrigan Hall was once the racket
court for the Kildare Street Club, from
whom the College purchased the site in
the 1860. Originally leased back to Kildare
Street Club in the 1870’s the College
extended back to incorporate this room
into the main building. Many if the original
features were retained, the high ceiling
being the most notable. The hall is named
for Sir Dominic Corrigan (1802-1880) who
was Knighted for his services to medicine.
And was the first catholic President of the
College.

The Lecture Theatre is a modern, purposebuilt auditorium. It features state-of-the-art
audiovisual facilities and is an ideal location
for lectures, screenings and presentations.
Its tiered cinema-style seating can
accommodate 60 guests. The Lecture
Theatre is named after John Feely (19472009), a former Registrar of the College.

This room was designed specifically to
house the College’s Library. It takes its name
from
Sir Patrick Dun (1642-1713), who at his
death in 1713 donated his personal library
to the College. This formed the nucleus for
the library’s collections, which today holds
approximately 20,000 volumes dating from
the 16th to 21st century. With the College’s
archive collections it forms one of the most
important collections for the study of the
history of medicine and medical education
in Ireland.
Originally designed to house the College’s
museum of medical specimens, this room
now holds two collections of medical
books, donated to the College by Dr
Thomas Percy Claude Kirkpatrick (18691954) and
Dr Fleetwood Churchill (1808-1878). 5.4 M
