They have to smooth the pulsating DC current while storing the energy during the time of current flow and retaining the current flow in the load circuit during the brake times. Therefore inductances with high DC bias are required. Hence smoothing chokes used with modern power supplies have to meet high demands, e.g. high storage energy in small volumes and low losses with high clock frequencies. Furthermore they have to be cost effective.
