Dear 8th Grade Parents,
(1) As mentioned in a previous email, 8th grade students will be going to Uxbridge High
School tomorrow to tentatively select Grade 9 courses. They will go through this process even if
they are not attending UHS. If you have any questions about the high school course selection
process, please email or call Mr. Flanagan, our guidance counselor,
at mflanagan@uxbridge.k12.ma.us or 508-278-8634. Sometime between tomorrow and April
vacation, Mr. Flanagan will be meeting with all 8th graders individually after they select their
tentative courses at UHS to verify and review their course selections; changes can be made
after tomorrow. We have asked all 8th graders to bring the "yellow" sheet tomorrow to make the
process go smoothly at UHS (Grade 9 Course Selection Sheet attached). They were given this
yellow double-sided sheet two weeks ago when the UHS team came to speak to 8th graders
about the Grade 9 course selection process. The UHS 2015-16 Program of Studies document was
too big to attach to this email (I tried), so feel free to review that document, which can be found
of the left side of the UHS website: https://sites.google.com/a/uxbridge.k12.ma.us/the-uxbridgehigh-school/
(2) See attached for important end-of-year Grade 8 information, which includes dates for the
Grade 8 class trip, as well as Grade 8 Debate finals/Dinner Dance/Promotional ceremony
information.
Thanks and have a good day,

Newsletter for Parents of Grade 8 Students:
Grade 8 Class Trip:
This year’s Grade 8 class trip will be to Canobie Lake Park on Friday, June 5th. We are
scheduled to leave the school at 8 a.m. and return at 5 p.m. Please note that students
should plan accordingly for lunch. They may bring their own or purchase food in the park.
Students will be responsible for any items they bring or buy; there are lockers available for
daily rentals of $10-$15. Students may wear a bathing suit for the splash park and/or water
rides; however, they will be expected to wear a shirt and shorts when not on a water ride.
A permission slip will be coming home at the beginning of May.
Grade 8 Debates:
The students will be given a prompt for the debate in ELA classes at the end of May. Each
team will be given ample opportunity to prepare in and out of school. They will then
compete during the school hours for the debate preliminary rounds, and the winning teams
will compete on June 18th at 6 p.m. in the McCloskey Middle School Auditorium. All are
welcome and encouraged to attend this exciting event.
Grade 8 Field Day:
Field day will be held on _______________with a makeup date of ______________
Grade 8 Dinner Dance:
The annual Grade 8 Dinner Dance is scheduled to be held on Monday, June 22nd, from
6-9 p.m. at Uxbridge High School.
The following information is intended to help parents plan for the event:
Gowns, extravagant dress, and tuxedos are too formal. For boys; a shirt and tie or collared
shirt with slacks (no jeans) is appropriate. For girls; dresses, skirts, or dress slacks are good
choices. We ask that there be no strapless dresses. Flowers are not necessary and
limousines are not appropriate. The Dinner Dance is not planned as a couple’s event;
students do not need and should not have “dates” to this 8th Grade Dinner Dance. We also
respectfully request that you do not escort your child into the facility to prevent congestion
because we have found this delays the start of their special evening. Your cooperation and
support is greatly appreciated.
Grade 8 Minor Awards
The grade 8 students will receive their minor awards/certificates for participation in clubs,
activities, sports etc. on Monday, June 22nd, from 9:30 until 10:15 a.m. We ask if you
would like to attend (optional) that you arrive by 9:35 a.m. in the McCloskey auditorium.
Grade 8 Promotion Ceremony:
The Grade 8 Promotion Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, June 23rd , from 9-10 a.m. in
the McCloskey Middle School Gymnasium. There will be a few major awards/recognitions,
and all students will receive their promotional certificates. All are welcome and encouraged
to attend.
