MULTIMEDIA LABORATORY UNIVERSITY OF CRETE A brief presentation and our research activities The Multimedia Laboratory operates in the field of information technologies and communications. It emphasizes on interactive multimedia, on the world wide web and on distant learning. It has designed and developed a number of multimedia applications addressed to any level of education whereas in the world wide web it specializes in creating internet portals. With the Administration System of Historical Content that it has developed it is also active in the development of portals with historical, political and cultural content. MULTIMEDIA LABORATORY UNIVERSITY CRETE OF The themes that are dealt with by these projects are different for each age group, concerning its approach as well as the amount of information. It includes many practical exercises where the pupil can write down his/her own habits and evaluate them. This project has been approved by the Pedagogic Institute and has been distributed in schools. • “Diagoras and Olympia” An animated production on CD-Rom which addresses mainly Greek pupils age 12-15 which live in foreign countries or foreign pupils who wish to learn more about the Greek culture or to learn the Greek language. The project’s aim is to maintain, to cultivate and to promote Greek language and culture. It deals with cultural, lingual and historical issues including many exercises and games. This project has been approved by the Pedagogic Institute and has been distributed in Greek schools abroad. Multimedia Laboratory UNIVERSITY OF CRETE It was awarded with the - 2nd prize in the multimedia competition “Spinalonga Festival 2000” during the EuroMediterranean cultural meeting in Crete (01 October 2000) - 1st journalists’ award in the “9 th Festival of Multimedia Awards Möbius 2000 (2nd Greek participation) in the category of educational software (4-5 December 2000) - 3rd prize in the 2nd Pan-Hellenic Multimedia and Internet Competition “Multimedia” in the category ”Production companies” (10-13 December 2000) • “Heraklion, a city and its history” (DVD-Rom) A multimedia application by which you can browse the past and the present of a city with 4.000 years of history. Your guides are rare engravings, paintings, old pictures, original texts, music, audio and video. Through a game of exploration, discovery and communication of knowledge, where reality walks hand in hand with the electronic presentation, aspects of a city are presented known only to a few. This project was awarded with the 1st prize of CULTURE in the 5 th Multimedia Festival Möbius on 28 February 2005 in Athens and represented our country in the 13th International Multimedia Festival Möbius on the island of Reunion on 22-23 March 2005. • The Life and the Work of Nikos Kazantzakis An educational / recreational edition about the life and the work of Nikos Kazantzakis. An acquaintance with the amazing personality of Nikos Kazantzakis and with the troubled times he lived in, through original scientific texts and visual material, rare photographic material and manuscripts, video and music. The material is given in Greek, English, German and French. • Design and development of the project “Development of a Website and of Supporting Software”. An Internet portal in four languages about Nikos Kazantzakis, presenting various information about the life and work of the great Greek litterateur along with a rich list of his works. The access to this information is facilitated by a series of services. This Internet portal features a separate unit for the Museum “Nikos Kazantzakis” in the village of Myrtia in the municipality of Kazantzakis. (http://www.kazantzakis-museum.gr) • Design and development of the project “Electronic Tour in the old City of Heraklion”. This is the electronic presentation and demonstration of the cultural and historical riches of the old city of Heraklion in a web environment, based on modern methods of projection and information with the purpose to inform the citizen and the visitor. • Development of the Historical Review System – ISTOPOLIS. The Multimedia Laboratory has progressed in the study and development of the integrated review system of historical content (data and metadata) for the support of projects with a historical and cultural content. Through its complete and easy functions ISTOPOLIS allows the organizing, the structuring and the unification of a labyrinth of information, meanings, historical files, multimedia material etc. It reviews and projects on the world wide web the content through dynamic user interfaces PHP and HTML. Its completed form will operate with the support of the FLASH technology. Through ISTOPOLIS the following projects were realized: the internet portal of the “Nikos Kazantzakis Museum”, the historical internet portal of the Municipality of Heraklion with the title “Electronic Tour in the old City of Heraklion”. • “Heraklion, a city and its history” (web) In this internet portal, which was realized for the Municipality of Heraklion, the historical and cultural wealth of the old city of Heraklion is presented. Original texts, historical pictures and videos, historical records among other things compose part of the material that is presented.
