Glossary
Abrasion (wipe) – the tendency of a
wipe to lose integrity as a result of
wiping another surface.

Adsorbent – a material that has the

Aseptic – avoiding contamination by
microorganisms, typically in a clean
environment using sterile products.
Autoclave – pressure vessel used for
steam sterilisation.
Bioburden – population of viable
microorganisms on a product (recorded
as a count).
Fibre – a particle having a length 100
micrometers or greater, and an aspect
ration of at least 1:10.
Micron – a unit of measurement equal to
one-millionth of a meter or approximately
0.00003937 inch.

Wipe Fabrics
Wipe Borders
Knitted
Knitted fabric consists of interlacing loops of
yarn which offers several design options – knit
pattern, yarn chemistry and structure. Knit
wipes provide great cleaning efficiency and
good abrasion resistance, chemical tolerance
andsorption.Theyaretheprimarywipesused
inISOClass3-6cleanrooms.
Sealed Border
Sealed border wipes are designed to prevent
thereleaseofparticlesandfibres.Thesearethe
cleanest,mosteffectivewipesforISOClass3
cleanrooms, mini-environments, and
semiconductorprocessingequipment.Theseare
normallyconstructedfrom100%continuous
filament, double-knit polyester.
Nonwoven
Nonwovenwipesincludepatternedpolymer
films, mechanically intertwined or chemically
bonded fibres and composites of multiple
layers.Nonwovenwipesofferawiderangeof
performanceproperties.Theytendtobeless
expensive and are good for areas that can
tolerate higher levels of releasable particles
and fibres.
Sealed Edge
Laser cut, sealed edge wipes provide lower fibre
release than cut edge wipes at a lower cost than
sealedborderwipes.Theyarenormally
constructedfrom100%continuousfilament,
double-knitpolyester.Thesearelowin
releasableparticles,NVRsandionic
contaminants and are ideal for all purpose
applications in critical cleanrooms and higher
environments.
Fibres and Yarns
Fibresareclassifiedaseitherstapleorfilament.
A staple fibre is a short manufactured strand
(usually 1”-3” long). Staple yarn is a spun staple
fibre. Staple fibres and yarns tend to break and
release particles from the wipe.
Filamentfibresarecontinuousstrands,suchas
polyester,nylonandsilk.Filamentyarnconsists
ofbundlesoffilamentfibres.Itisdurable,soit
releases fewer particles.

Cut Edge
Cut edge, knit wipes are used in critical
environments where contamination control
requirementsareparamount.Theyareideally
suited for cleaning and wiping applications in
ISOClass5cleanroomenvironments.Theseare
normallyconstructedof100%polyesterornylon
and offer low particle release and low levels of
extractable.Theirsuperiorstrengthallowsfor
rigorous wiping with minimal fibre release.
Most cleanroom wipes are based on polyester
yarn due to its relative ease of use, availability,
chemical resistance and autoclavability.
Monofilament Yarn – one fine thread of
continuous length.
Multifilament Yarn – tow or more
monofilaments assembled or twisted
together.
Non Volatile Residues (NVR) – residues
that do not vapourise easily.
Particle (Contamination Control) – a
minute quantity of solid or liquid matter.
Particulate – a substance that consists
of particles.
Sorbency – A collective term describing
the tendency of a wipe to hold fluids,
whether by absorption (within the
capillaries or pores of the wipe) or by
adsorption (as a surface phenomenon).
Sterile – having no living matter present.
This includes all microbiological life, such
as bacteria, fungi or viruses.
Sterilisation – validated process used
to render a product free from viable
microorganisms (Gamma Irradiation,
Beta Irradiation, Autoclave (Steam),
ETO (Ethylene Oxide), Terminal
Sterilisation).
Sterility Assurance Level (SAL) –
probability of a viable organism being
present on a product after sterilisation,
normally expressed as 10-6.
