New Guidelines for Attendance and Athletic/Extracurricular Participation in
the High School
The purpose of this plan is to put in place guidelines for participation in Albion’s athletics and
extracurricular activities that motivate students to maintain acceptable attendance and to arrive to
school on time and to stay in school for the duration of the school day. Throughout this plan the
word “ineligible” is used to indicate the prohibition from a student’s participation in athletics or
extracurricular activities (including as a spectator). Ineligible is defined as being unable to
participate in any game, competition, or event that goes beyond a typical practice for a sport,
club, or group. All ineligible students would be able to both practice with their sport or club
during the time in which they were ineligible and to participate in events or activities that are
credit bearing within their academic schedule. For a clear definition of the specific events for any
club/group/activity that students would be ineligible to participate in, please inquire with the
advisor to that club/group/activity. In the case of athletics, ineligible is clearly defined to indicate
all games, scrimmages, and competitions.
1. (Ineligibility as it pertains to attendance) No student will be allowed to participate in
extracurricular or athletic activities when their attendance has dropped below 90% of
days on the school year.
A. Every Friday the attendance office will generate a list of students whose attendance
is less than 90%. (Note that this does not begin until after the first marking period
during the first semester and after the 5th marking period for the second semester)
 The 90% threshold will be tallied as follows:
• Absent from school = 2 points
• Tardy to school = 1 point
• (see separate chart on page 3 of this document for point totals and
dates)
 A tardy is recorded every time a student signs in to the office after the school
day has begun at 7:45am.
 Legal (excused) absences and legal (excused) tardies will NOT count towards
the ineligibility tally
• Please see student handbook section on Attendance for full definition
of excused absences/tardies and note that all excuses must be
submitted within 5 days of the absence/tardy
 This list will be shared with all of the coaches and advisors through the
athletic director and attendance office every Friday. Coaches and advisors
will check the list for students on their team or in their club/group/activity and
communicate the ineligibility to the student which would begin the following
Monday.
B. Once a student is ineligible, they must sit out that sport or activity until their
attendance is at or above 90% again (at least one week). The period of ineligibility
spans from Monday through Sunday until the next list is generated.
 Students may appeal their eligibility status if extenuating circumstances arise
C. The chart on page three shows the date on each of the Fridays during the school
year and how many “points” on that date would be needed to be considered at less
than 90% attendance and therefore ineligible.

2. (Ineligibility as it pertains to suspensions) No student will be allowed to participate in
extracurricular or athletic activities on the day that they serve a suspension (either out-ofschool or in-school suspension) or have an outstanding disciplinary consequence not yet
served (ex. detention) as assigned through administration as a consequence of a
disciplinary referral. THIS INCLUDES ALL PRACTICES OR REHERSALS
A. The assistant principal would ensure that students who have outstanding
consequences would not be eligible for participation. The assistant principal or
athletic director would notify the coach/advisor that they were ineligible for
participation on that day.
3. (Ineligibility as it pertains to being in school less than 50% of the day) No student
will be allowed to participate in extracurricular or athletic activities on a day where they
are not in school for more than 50% of the school day (2 full blocks). THIS INCLUDES
ALL PRACTICES OR REHERSALS
A. Upon signing in to school after 11:00am the attendance office or athletic director
will notify the coach/advisor that they are ineligible for participation on that day.
4. (Ineligibility as it pertains to leaving school illegally) If a student leaves school without
authorization and is illegally missing from his or her classes, they will be ineligible to
participate in extracurricular or athletic activities on that day. THIS INCLUDES ALL
PRACTICES OR REHERSALS
A. The athletic director or assistant principal would notify the coach/advisor that they
were ineligible for participation on that day.
