New Student Connections (NSC) creates and supports shared USF experiences that connect students to the
campus community and provide for a successful transition. New Student Connections is committed to

ABOUT NEW STUDENT CONNECTIONS STUDENT LEADERS
NSC Student Leaders support all first-year and transfer (new) students throughout their first year at the
University of South Florida. Student Leaders focus on outreach and relationship development through NSC
programs, mentoring, and intentional conversations to provide a positive transition for all new students.
Students in this role use their knowledge and perspective as experienced peers to connect new students to
shared experiences, community, and resources to create a sense of belonging to USF.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
 Be a full-time USF student graduating in December 2017 or later.
 Have and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 and good disciplinary standing according to
university policy throughout application, selection, and employment periods.
 Have confidence to present, speak, and facilitate to peers.
 Maintain a high energy level, enthusiasm, and stamina within all working hours, including night and
weekend events.
 Demonstrate a positive attitude, strong work ethic, willingness to learn and grow, and professional
demeanor.
 Be committed to developing and taking leadership, communication, and customer service skills to a new
level.
 Demonstrate involvement in the USF/Tampa community
 Attend all trainings, professional development and events.

NSC Student Leaders are expected to act as representatives of NSC and USF, exhibit behavior appropriate to
university and civil regulations, and demonstrate good customer service skills. They are to fully participate in all
training activities and provide feedback to the NSC professional staff concerning Student Leader issues of any
kind (personnel, programmatic, etc.). NSC Student Leaders must successfully complete the Spring NSC Student
Leader Seminar and must participate all August training dates, WOW commitments, and any fall responsibilities.
2017 PEER ADVISOR LEADER (PAL): POSITION DESCRIPTION
PEER ADVISOR LEADER (PAL) AS A STAFF MEMBER
The Peer Advisor Leader (PAL) is an upper-level leadership position in the Office of New Student Connections (NSC). PALs
embody the office’s mission and purpose and serve as a resource and mentor for all new students who demonstrate a
need for coaching in social, personal, or academic areas of their college transition. PALs represent NSC and USF at a variety
of office and university events. PALs also assist in the ongoing training of Network Leaders and CampU Counselors by
facilitating sessions and/or small group discussions during the Student Leader Seminar and August Training.
PAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
SPRING 2017:
 Attend seminar planning meetings throughout the spring semester.
 Attend and facilitate one-on-one advisory meetings with NSC Student Leaders and Coordinating supervisor.
SUMMER 2017:
 Plan, promote, and facilitate connections amongst incoming first-year and transfer (new) students through
Orientation presentations, Summer B programming, and NSC outreach initiatives.
 Attend and participate in training and program development meetings.
 Utilize social media to connect new students to the USF community (Facebook, Twitter, etc.).
 Attend, participate, and assist in facilitating August Training.
 Assist NSC Professional Staff in program logistics and development for CampU and The Network.
 Attend bi-weekly, one-on-one advisory meetings with supervising Coordinator for New Student Connections.
 Serve as Peer Mentor team during CampU; responsibilities include large group facilitation, mentoring CampU
Counselors, connecting with new students, and logistics.
 Other duties as assigned.
FALL 2017:
 Assist NSC Professional Staff in program logistics and development for Week of Welcome (WOW).
 Continue to engage with first-year and transfer (new) students throughout Fall 2017 semester through outreach,
programs, and office hours.
 Assist with programmatic aspects of The Network, including (but not limited to) weekly meetings, peer mentoring,
and Network Link event support.
 Attend and provide staffing support for Fall Family and Friends Weekend in September/ October of 2017, as
needed.
 Assist with the recruitment and selection of the 2017 NSC Student Leader Team.
 Other duties as assigned.
TERMS & PERIOD OF EMPLOYMENT
The official period of employment will be from January 2017-December 2017, pending the successful completion of the
Spring 2017 NSC Student Leader Seminar. Due to the time requirements, the following restrictions apply:
 PALs cannot hold a position as a leader in the Orientation Office or Campus Activities Board Member during their
period of employment. PALs may only serve as a Resident Assistant (RA) through the Spring 2017 semester
(serving as a Summer 2017 or Fall 2017 RA will not be allowed due to schedule conflicts and commitments).
 PALs cannot study abroad during their work term (January 2017-November 2017).
 While New Student Connections encourages academic advancement, regularly scheduled summer courses should
not interfere with NSC work schedule, which will be provided to PALs in the spring.
 All other jobs/commitments outside the PAL position must be communicated to and approved by the supervising
Coordinator.
All NSC student staff members are expected to uphold their commitment to New Student Connections throughout their
period of employment.
2017 NETWORK LEADER: POSITION DESCRIPTION
NETWORK LEADERS AS A STAFF MEMBER
The Network Leader is a leadership position in the Office of New Student Connections (NSC). Network Leaders are
responsible for assisting new students in making a successful adjustment to USF by leading interest-based, small groups
and meeting individually with students weekly during the First Fifty Days of the fall semester. The Network Leader will
collaborate with other Networks, the Office of New Student Connections and campus/ community partners to lead their
new students through these dynamic and transformational first-semester experiences. In addition, Network Leaders
represent NSC and USF at Week of Welcome (WOW), and other NSC and USF events.
NETWORK LEADER DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
FALL 2017:
 Assist new students with their transition to USF by facilitating a Network group.
 Develop and implement a comprehensive, semester-long schedule of events/meetings/programs for your Network
group.
 Facilitate and/or execute weekly meetings or programs for your assigned Network group in collaboration with
other Network Leaders, campus offices/departments, and community organizations.
 Communicate regularly, effectively, and efficiently with new students throughout the fall semester.
 Utilize the Network event reporting system and attendance rosters to provide the program with consistent
updates about events and attendance.
 Meet weekly with two first-year and transfer (new) students from The Network for one-on-one meetings to
discuss transition & provide resources for success.
 Attend all Trainings, Retreats, and Staff Meetings.
 Assist NSC Professional Staff in program logistics and development for Week of Welcome (WOW).
 Attend one-on-one advisory meetings with supervising Coordinator for New Student Connections.
 Actively participate in other New Student Connection programming.
 Assist with the recruitment and selection of the 2017 NSC Student Leader Team.
 Attend and provide staffing support for Family & Friends Weekend in late September/early October of 2017, as
needed.
 Perform other duties as assigned.

The CampU Counselor is a leadership position in the Office of New Student Connections (NSC). CampU Counselors are
responsible for leading a small group of first-year and transfer (new) students at CampU in August 2017 and throughout
their first year to help establish friendships, teach USF traditions, help new students explore their identity, and to develop
a sense of purpose as a USF Bull. In addition, CampU Counselors represent NSC and USF at Week of Welcome (WOW), and
other NSC and USF events.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
SUMMER 2017:
 Attend and participate in August Training prior to leaving for the CampU experience.
 Lead a small group of 10-12 first-year and transfer (new) students at CampU in August 2017 and throughout their
first year to help establish friendships, teach USF traditions, help new students explore their identity, and to
develop a sense of purpose as a USF Bull.
 Assist with setup, decoration, and logistical needs of the CampU retreat center.
 Facilitate connection activities and small group sessions with new and transfer students throughout and after the
CampU experience to promote community building.
 Manage late night activities and ensure that cabins are quiet for students who wish to sleep.
 Follow the CampU Risk Management policies and report any incident(s) to your immediate supervisor.
 Other duties as assigned.
FALL 2017:
 Assist NSC Professional Staff in program logistics and development for Week of Welcome (WOW).
 Provide opportunities for new students to meet other students and attend WOW traditions through Meet-N-Go
events.
 Attend and provide staffing support for Family and Friends Weekend in September/ October of 2017, as needed.
 Continue to engage with CampU participants throughout Fall 2017 through individual mentoring, group, and
CampU reunions.
 Assist with the recruitment and selection of the 2017 NSC Student Leader Team, as needed.
 Other duties as assigned.
