The SIP Report of the College of Business & Economics

Qassim University, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

(2014 – 2015)

The College of Business and Economics (CBE) at Qassim University, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia became a member of the PRME Initiative in January 2014 (PRME-http://www.unprme.org).

During the past 24 months the CBE’s main focus was to promote and disseminate discussion and awareness about the basic principles of the PRME among the school’s staff members and stakeholders. In addition the CBE has conducted several activities that are directly associated with the PRME's main principles.

The following activities reflected CBE’s practical actions that reflected the CBE's commitment to the PRME initiatives:

Firstly: For achieving the 1 st PRME principle, the CBE has organized numerous activities to develop the capabilities of students to be future generators to enhance sustainable development for business and society at large and to work for an inclusive and sustainable global economy.

Some of those activities the College has organized are:

In 5th May 2015, the CBE has organized a training session. That training course was aimed at providing a real life experience to the students about how an organization works. Through role plays in a simulated environment the students got insight into actual working of a company, which is in line with the CBE’s mission. A virtual publishing company was formed and students were divided into different organizational groups.

They were asked to play different roles in the company with specific targets to be

4

achieved. The simulated environment provided a good insight to the students about how an organization actually works.

On 6th April 2015, a training course was conducted on "Assessment of aptitude, information about different specializations" This training course was aimed at providing guidance to the students of Level 1,2, and 3 on assessing their aptitude and selecting the specialization for their future professional career. The students were briefed about the knowledge and skills that they need to develop in different specializations like

Accounting, Finance, and Economics in order to build successful careers in these domains, and the possible career options available to them.

On 15th FEB. 2016, a training course was organized on "General guidelines for creating and delivering an effective presentation". This training course presents how the student can do an effective presentation and create a successful introduction, in addition to making a professional conclusion to achieve the presentation’s goal. Developing good communication skills is one of the Learning objectives of the BBA program. The students learnt the process of creating a good presentation, delivering it effectively and handling questions from the audience.

Secondly: Taking into account the importance of social responsibility, values and ethics, the CBE has been consistently working to incorporate issues of global social responsibility, values and ethics into its academic activities and curricula. For example, an evaluation team regularly conducted an AoL assessment for major courses to ensure that issues of social responsibility, values and ethics are maintained in those courses. In addition, researches are going on for embedding CSR into business curricula.

Thirdly: Although it is a teaching College, the CBE achieved good records of scientific research:

CBE publishes a bi-annual journal targeting local communities and business community in the MENA region. Each issue focuses on numerous topics including, entrepreneurship, innovation, leadership, finance and responsible business practices. In addition, the CBE

5

Council has approved a Research Priority Document in which six research priorities are specified: o How to embed corporate social responsibility into business curriculum o The role of higher education in community services o The role of Small and medium enterprises in developing local community o Publications in the areas of real estates, sustainable development.

o Issues of sustainable development o Issues of business ethics

Business schools are currently recommended to pursue educational programmes that meet and match the community needs and requirements. In achieving that objective CBE had organized an event titled "Innovative Educational and Teaching Methods" in

21/11/1435H.

Fourthly: In the field of partnership, the CBE continuously interacts with the industry to extend its knowledge of their challenges in meeting social and environmental responsibilities and to explore jointly effective approaches to meeting these challenges .

In doing so, the CBE has conducted activities and workshops. For example, CBE organized this SMEs workshop in Collaboration with Chamber of Commerce & Industry in Al Qassim, on 13 th

May 2014.

The workshop was intended to discuss and study the reality of SMEs in the Kingdom of Saudi

Arabia in general and in the region of Al Qassim in particular. This was to be achieved by highlighting the global experiences in the field of SMEs through organizing workshops among

SMEs stakeholders and focusing on ways to achieve growth and sustainability of SMEs.

In line with its mission and for its willingness to sustain its engagement with business community, the CBE has formed a team work to fulfill those objectives in real estate. The main task of this team is to activate the CBE’s partnership with real estate sector. In addition to that is to draw a plan how to embed real estate thoughts in management education. Five texts are in process to be finished by the end of this academic year, which are:

6

1/ Basics in Real Estates

2/ Real Estate Development

3/ Real Estate Marketing

4/ Real Estate Finance

5/ Real Estate Investment

Since entrepreneurship represents the core of CBE mission, and in collaboration with funding institutions, the CBE organized in 11/1/1436H a one day event with the

Centennial Fund. The primary objective of the event was to create awareness among young generations about the importance of business and entrepreneurship activities.

Fifthly: Action Plan 2016-2017

Conducting a study in "Investment in Generating Renewable Energy" in collaboration with Regional Economic Council of Qassim, KSA".

Economy/ or SMEs and on issues of real estate's finance).

Conducting (2) training sessions for the community.

Participating in (2) PRME activities at regional and international levels

How to embed deeply PRME principles into CBE's curricula

Organizing (4) seminars about issues of PRME.

Sixthly: Self-assessment: CBE has been involved in several activities and events that fit the

Principles of the PRME. Although, the CBE is looking forward to achieve other essential events within the coming two years. Some of those events have been listed in the action plan for those two years. The figure below shows levels of self-assessment:
