SECTION 02800 – BARB WIRE FENCES PART 1 -- GENERAL 1.1 WORK OF THIS SECTION A. Furnish and install 3-strand barb wire fencing along Road 68 where existing fence is removed or damaged as indicated on the Plans or as directed by the Engineer and in accordance with the Contract Documents. 1.2 REFERENCE SPECIFICATIONS, CODES AND STANDARDS A. Standard for Door, Drapery, Gate, Louver, and Window Operators and Systems QUALIFICATIONS Manufacturer’s Qualifications: Barb wire fencing shall be products of a manufacturer which has been successfully engaged in the production of such items for a period of at least five years. Installer’s Qualifications: Installation of the barb wire fences shall be by the manufacturer or by a licensed contractor registered with the manufacturer. SUBMITTALS General: Furnish submittals in accordance with Section 01300 - Contractor Submittals. PART 2 -- PRODUCTS 2.1 FENCE MATERIALS A. Wire – Each line wire shall consist of two twisted strands of 12 ½ gauge wire or 15 ½ gauge high tensile strength wire twisted with 2 point barbs. Wire shall comply with the requirements of ASTM A121. B. Steel Line Posts – 1. Each line post shall be steel “T” type (1 3/8” x 1 3/8” x 1/8”) with a minimum weight of 1.33 pounds per foot and shall be 5 ½ feet long with an anchor plate. 2. Posts shall have suitable corrugations, knobs, studs, or grooves for fastening line wires. 3. Steel posts shall be factory painted with weather resistant paint (color from standard color chart) or hot dipped galvanized. 4. Setting line posts in concrete is not required. C. Wood post will not be accepted. D. Braces – E. 1. Horizontal braces shall be structural steel, 2 inch diameter. 2. Pull posts shall be 7 feet long minimum. Miscellaneous – 1. Suitable galvanized devices for holding barbed wire firmly in position shall be of commercial quality and design. 2. Wire used to fasten barbed wire to metal posts shall be galvanized and 11 gauge or heavier. Clips and hog rings shall be 9 gauge or heavier. PART 3 -- EXECUTION 3.1 A. INSPECTION Prior to commencing installation, require Installer to inspect all areas and conditions within which Work of this Section will be performed. Dimensions and clearances shall be verified. Earth trees, brush and other obstructions which interfere with the proper construction of fences shall be removed and disposed of unless the Engineer orders certain trees to remain in place. This work will be considered part of the fence construction and no measurement or payment will be made for this work. Fence 1. Line posts shall be equally spaced so that posts are not placed greater than 30 feet on center. If line posts are spaced greater than 15 feet on center then stays shall be placed equal distance between line posts. 2. Line posts shall be placed vertical on a surveyed alignment approved by the Owner. 3. Line posted shall be driven in place a minimum 18 inches by means that are not damaging to the post. 4. Wire spacing – barbed wires shall be spaced an equal distance apart and on the private property side of the post. The top wire shall be placed 1 to 2 inches below the top of the line post and the bottom wire shall be placed 8 to 10 inches above the ground. 5. Stranded wire shall be stretched between each post and fastened with suitable fasteners at each post. 6. Splices shall be by means of a Western Union splice or by Engineer approved splice sleeve applied with a tool designed for the purpose. C. Pull Assemblies 1. Two steel posts with braces shall be spaced at intervals not to exceed 1,320 feet. 2. Post for pull assemblies shall be spaced between 6 and 10 feet apart and drive 3 feet minimum into compacted or undisturbed soil. 3. Horizontal braces shall be placed a minimum 3 foot above ground. 4. Brace wire shall be double stand 9 gauge galvanized smooth wire or a double stand of barbed wire. D. Signs 1. E. All existing warning signs shall be removed from the existing fence and reinstalled on newly installed fence. Cleanup 1. Remove waste fencing materials and other debris from the Site each workday.
