Dimmable luminaires are the most responsible
way to reduce costs. They always provide the
optimum amount of light, appropriate to the
presence or absence of people and the

Dimming saves energy
Dimmable luminaires reduce energy consumption by their
very nature. Every lumen in excess of what is needed
increases CO₂ emissions unnecessarily. The greatest
potential energy savings with lighting systems come from
automatically adjusting the dimming level according to
the amount of freely available daylight. Tridonic offers
a wide range of technical options. These include the
direct integration of daylight sensors and motion sensors, to respond directly to the presence or absence of
people and the available ambient light. A long series of
intelligent functions enables energy to be saved continually and effortlessly. These functions include optimised
lamp operation, low power consumption on standby and
automation for corridors, storage rooms and car parks.
High-quality dimming with a high level of comfort
Artificial light must simulate nature as closely as possible to make people feel comfortable. What are needed
therefore are dimmable luminaires that provide exactly
the amount of light required at the time. By changing
the amount of light it is possible to create new looks –
with only modest technical outlay, as dimmable ballasts
from Tridonic prove. New lighting systems can be created thanks to high-quality plug’n play solutions via the
SMART interface and the versatile programmability of the

Different standards for every application
Our dimmable ballasts offer simple installation and uncomplicated connection to lighting systems because they
all support the digital DSI standard and the devices in
the ECO and EXCEL one4all series also support the DALI
communication protocol.

Since 1991 when Tridonic caused a sensation
with the first digital processor, the pace of
development has been rapid – in terms not
only of the X range of products but also in
the capabilities of each device.
Multi-functional for maximum effect
and minimum cost
To keep installation costs as low as possible and to ensure intuitive operation, all Tridonic ballasts are equipped
with a multi-functional interface that offers flexible connections for all additional functions. The internationally
acclaimed control versions (DALI, DSI, switchDIM and
corridorFUNCTION) offer a wide range of dimming options. A key aspect of Tridonic ballasts is that each of
the control versions is wired via the same connections.
The device automatically detects the control version and
automatically switches to the appropriate mode.
Excellent safety
Reliability and safety are central requirements of the luminaire market. This is why dimmable Tridonic ballasts in
all series have impressive safety features and operate on
both ac and dc power supplies. The ballasts are therefore
ideal for emergency lighting. Integrated protection against
overvoltage, undervoltage and high thermal conditions
means that the ballast have long lifespans.

The ballasts in the PCA EXCEL one4all series combine a
large number of technical innovations. Equipped with a
multi-functional interface and extensive storage options,
the products comply with all current communication
standards. The ballast detects the relevant standard
automatically and then automatically switches to the
right mode. PCA EXCEL one4all ballasts for T5 lamps
also automatically detect light sources of the same length
and operate them with the correct lamp parameters. With
the PCA EXCEL one4all ballasts any parameters can be
set as required.
Intelligent solutions made easy
The integrated SMART interface offers a wide range of

The PCA ECO series offers high quality and excellent

retains your settings in the event of a power failure,

The multi-functional interface makes work quicker
and easier. Detection is automatic, whether DALI, DSI,
switchDIM, corridorFUNCTION or SMART sensors. Flexible dimmable lighting systems can therefore be put into
operation very quickly and without the need for any additional aids.

In addition to sensors you can install SMART plugs.
These are used for manual programming of a wide variety of device parameters, such as corridorFUNCTION
profiles and DALI group addresses. The new “Memory
SMART Plug” in the PCA EXCEL one4all series enables
the device memory and programmed settings to be
mirrored, which greatly simplifies maintenance of the
lighting system.
In all, four different sensor types can be operated with
dimmable ballasts from Tridonic, depending on the type
of device. You can choose presence sensors, daylight
sensors or sensors with an infra-red interface.
The multi-functional interface gives you greater flexibility
and system efficiency. In turn, this gives you new possibilities; for example you can combine central communication standards (DALI, DSI) with local SMART sensors.

A luminaire with a T5 multi-lamp ballast can be equipped
with different lamps of the same length. The ballasts for
compact fluorescent lamps also support a large number of
different lamp types. The characteristics of the multi-lamp
devices help designers, planners, operators and facility
managers to achieve even greater flexibility. This means
that stock-keeping can be significantly improved, which in
turn leads to cost savings in advance of the actual use of
the products.

Simply brilliant
The principle of the corridorFUNCTION is simple.
Light is only produced when it is needed. This
function combines high levels of convenience
with safety and energy efficiency.
All PCA ballasts are equipped with the corridorFUNCTION – a very simple
and highly efficient solution. When you enter a room, the required lighting is
instantly available and at full strength. The system only slowly reduces the
lighting level in rooms that are no longer being used. Whether and when the
lighting is completely switched-off depends on the selected ballast and its
corridorFUNCTION profiles and these are user-definable on PCA EXCEL
one4all ballasts. Thanks to the corridorFUNCTION, convenience, safety
and energy savings go hand in hand.

h corridorFUNCTION Pay Back Calculator
Tridonic has developed a useful software tool that calculates the amortisation
period and the savings in costs and CO₂ emissions for corridorFUNCTION
applications compared with conventional solutions. All you have to do is
enter a few values. The tool is available to download free of charge at
www.corridorfunction.com, “Payback” menu.
Small cost, huge effect
Even the simplest solutions with a standard motion sensor are all that is
required for corridorFUNCTION mode. The effect is impressive and there is
no need for a separate controller. In applications with daylight control the
combination of a SMART daylight sensor and motion sensor helps maximise
potential savings.

In rooms and areas where minimum brightness levels
are needed at all times to help people find their way
around and to improve safety the standard “Never off”
function guards against excessive energy consumption.
A dimming level of 10 % is sufficient to provide appropriate lighting at all times.
__ “1 minute off” or “30 minutes off”
Using a SMART plug you can select either 1 minute
or 30 minutes as the fade-off time.
A combination of the corridorFUNCTION and a light
sensor provides effective brightness control. SMART
sensor 5D 19f can be connected directly to the ballast
thanks to the SMART interface. The sensor detects the
ambient light and the luminaire produces only enough
lumens needed to achieve the user-defined constant
light value.
The PCA EXCEL one4all series, together with SMART
sensors DP and DPI, can perform the corridorFUNCTION
automatically. This can be used for separate intelligent
solutions, integrated in central systems or provide a basis
for upgrade projects.

SMART Plug cF
SMART Plug cF provide a simple means of configuring
the corridorFUNCTION. SMART Plug cF 1min offers a
1 minute dwell time at a dimming level of 10 % and then
the luminaires are switched-off. Use SMART Plug cF
30min is you want the dwell time to be 30 minutes. The
“Never off” profile is set as the default on the ballast
without the need to use a SMART plug.
SMART Plug Gr
The PCA EXCEL one4all series offers the extremely useful
plugADDRESSING function which does away with the
often complicated and time-consuming on-site commissioning via the necessary software. SMART Plug Gr
provides simple DALI grouping of luminaires.
SMART Plug Ma
This plug stores all the parameters that are set on the
PCA EXCEL one4all ballast. If the ballast is replaced,
the information is transferred to the new ballast when
SMART Plug Ma is connected. This makes it easier to
get the systems back into operation after replacement.

SMART sensors
Intelligent energy savings
Thanks to the digital SMART interface, it is possible to connect daylight, presence and remote
control sensors easily and directly to the ballast.
In this way we can guarantee maximum energy
savings and maximum comfort.
The sensors detect the available ambient light and use this as the basis
for controlling the lighting system, to achieve a defined constant light value.
As a result, you can make energy savings of up to 60 % compared with nondimmable solutions. In combination with a presence sensor, energy savings
of up to 80 % are possible.
The compact modern design of the sensors and the various fixing options
give you enormous freedom for designing the luminaires. The sensors are
available for detection at heights of five or ten metres.
The constant light value is set on the sensor without the need for any tools
or accessories. In addition, you can switch our electronic ballasts on or off
via the digital interface or via the mains. Temporary dimming via DALI or
switchDIM is also possible.

Convenient and intelligent. This sensor enables up to two ballasts
to be connected, making three modes preprogrammed for the
corridorFUNCTION (1 minute, 30 minutes and “Never off”). Infra-red

the system. Switching and dimming functions are performed by long or short
presses of the switch. The dimming characteristic is automatically matched
to the sensitivity of the eye. With some ballasts you can even set the dimming
rates yourself.
Together with the new SMART 5D ambient light sensor, it can make luminaire
solutions even more energy-efficient. Available daylight is taken into account
and the luminaire provides a constant level of light. The value for this constant
level is set manually via the switch.

As the inventor of switchDIM, Tridonic continues to develop this successful
control technology. The sixth generation is at work in the latest digital dimmable ballasts. switchDIM is offered with a memory function in all the PCA versions. This is used, among other things, for storing the dimming value in the
event of interruptions in the power supply. This memory effect enables the
ballast to restore the lamp to its previous operating state when power returns.

Excellent safety at all levels
Every dimmable ballast from Tridonic is equipped with a
number of highly resistant protective plates. They ensure
that the ballasts operate correctly and last a long time.
Intelligent Voltage Guard
Prevention is better than cure – and that is also true of
ballasts. To help prevent damage due to overvoltage or
undervoltage, the mains voltage for all PCA ballasts is
constantly monitored. If the mains voltage is too low, the
relevant lamp circuit is switched-off. At voltages between
70 and 140 V the device switches-off and on again on a
non-cyclic basis. In the event of overvoltage, the protection system issues an alarm by causing the lamps to flash
alternately, so that the installer can immediately take
action to remedy the overvoltage.

Intelligent Temperature Guard
Constant temperature checks enhance the reliability
of the ballasts. Intelligent Temperature Guard provides
effective protection against thermal overloads by slowly
reducing the output if a defined ASIC temperature is exceeded. The reduction in overtemperature takes place in
small stages every two minutes and is repeated successively every 10 minutes as soon as the temperature falls
again. If the desired result cannot be achieved in this way
the luminaire is switched-off.
Functions for emergency lighting mode
Dimmable luminaires consume less power – and that is
also true in emergency lighting mode. Lower consumption in this mode has a positive effect on battery capacity
and cable dimensions.
PCA ballasts can be operated on ac or dc voltage. This
means there is no need for a separate emergency lighting
system. With a starting time of 0.2 seconds in dc emergency lighting mode, the digital dimmable ballasts are
ideal for emergency lighting. The ballasts automatically
detect dc voltage and jump to a predefined dc level
which is at 15 %. The dc level can be individually adjusted or predefined for the PCA EXCEL one4all product
group.
Other intelligent functions make compliance with statutory requirements much simpler. For example, it is
possible to set the software so that after every function
test the previous lighting level is automatically restored.

Dimming saves energy
Up to 80 % energy savings can be made with dimmable
ballasts, in combination with intelligent control systems
or directly connected sensors. Simply moving from
magnetic ballasts to electronic ballasts reduces energy
consumption by one quarter. Dimmable ballasts are even
more effective. They reduce energy consumption by as
much as 80 % by combining high lamp efficiency with
low intrinsic consumption and creating a basis for the
intelligent use of light.
The greatest potential energy savings with lighting
systems come from automatically adjusting the dimming
level according to the amount of freely available daylight.
In addition to daylight sensors, motion sensors can be
integrated so the lighting is controlled directly by the
presence or absence of people. Tridonic goes even
further. A long series of intelligent functions enables
energy to be saved continually and effortlessly with
dimmable ballasts. These functions include optimised
lamp operation, low power consumption on standby and
automation for corridors, storage rooms and car parks.
