MADELINE’S HOUSE BEGINS MOVE
Beginning in July, staff
and volunteers began to
pack boxes. First to
begin the move was the
office operation, followed
by moving the shelter to a
new location.
This has been a long journey, from learning that
Madeline’s House would
be forced to leave its
home of 14 years to the
moving vans arrival.
This journey has had its
difficulties, but there
were far more positives
than negative things coming from this experience.

The Board of Directors,
Members of the Advisory
Board, Volunteers and
Staff all feel enormous
gratitude toward all those
who have helped us step
through this journey.
Heartfelt thanks go to
all who have played a
role in finding and funding our new homes.
There is much left to be
done before we are settled into our new homes.
There are boxes to unpack and a lot of organizing to do, “but it’s
coming together beautifully,” said Sandie
Rowe, President.. We
are hopeful that the
shelter will be fully operational in its new location by early September.
What is Meant by Safety Planning?
President
Bernice Hawkins
Madeline’s House found
friends it didn’t know it
had. We have built many
new, supportive relationships. We’ve discovered
new and better ways to
provide safe haven to victims of abuse. And now
we have two homes instead of one: an office
location and a shelter location.
Madeline’s House and Piedmont Crisis Center are the only domestic and sexual
violence programs serving 12 counties in Southside Virginia. Often our hotline
calls include safety planning. Safety planning is what it sounds like: developing
strategies and ideas to keep you safe, no matter where you are in your relationship.
These plans differ for everyone. What works for one person might not be the
best option for someone else. Thankfully, our advocates are smart and intuitive
and so are you. They’ll brainstorm with you to consider tactics that could work
best, exploring options for both your immediate and long-term safety. Some-

Madeline’s House Opens Satellite Offices!
Madeline’s House has established ten satellite offices
throughout its 12 county service
area. This outreach initiative will
enable victims of domestic and
sexual violence in this predominantly rural area to have easier
access to critical services. Currently satellite offices are located
in 6 strategically chosen counties
allowing the greatest access to
everyone in this very large service area. Future plans are to
have at least one satellite office
in all 12 counties.
supportive counseling, safety
planning, victim / court advocacy, assistance with obtaining protective orders and document recovery, life skills assessment and
training options, assistance with
job and house searches, assistance in seeking appropriate legal
and medical counsel, information
and referral assistance, and arrangements for sheltering if needed. All services are free and no
appointment is needed. Call
888.819.2926 for location and
satellite office hours.
Among services offered at these
satellite offices are: personal
case management and individual
Madeline’s House will continue
serving victims of violence at its
shelter location as it has done for
14 years. This new satellite office program is just one more
way victims of abuse can reach
out for help.
In addition to this new outreach
effort, presentations and workshops remain available to community and professional groups.
If your group would like to
schedule a presentation or workshop, or if you have a personal
question, call our office at
434.292.1077 or 888.819.2926.
Our professional staff are trained
and certified in many areas related to domestic and sexual violence.
WISH LIST
SCVP is in dire need of some slightly used new vehicles for transporting our clients to and from appointments and work. Our limited funds
do not allow us to purchase new vehicles from a dealership; we are asking that if anyone has a dependable
used vehicle that they are willing to
donate to this cause, please call the
Executive Director at 434-292-1077.
Due to relocation efforts staff are
asking supporters to please call the
office at 434-292-1077 for a current
list of items that are needed at the
shelter prior to collecting donations.
Gift cards to Wal-Mart are always
useful. These are used for clients
who are in need of certain foods that
are not donated, prescriptions, cloth-
ing, etc.
If there is an individual or group
who would like to pay for satellite
T.V. service for residents please call
the office at 434-292-1077.
Volunteers Needed
Volunteers are a vital part in all
non-profit organizations. Most non
-profits are governed by a board of
directors who are volunteers; this
includes Southside Center for Violence Prevention, Inc. / Madeline’s
House/Piedmont Crisis Center!
Volunteers are a huge part in accomplishing goals and providing
services that a non-profit provides.
Many of our clients at Madeline’s
VO L U M E 1 , I SSU E 1
House could not move onto a better life away from the abuse that
they have experienced without the
help of a volunteer taking them to
an appointment, court date, or just
coming in to do a support group. If
you are looking to be a volunteer
consider SCVP. We are looking
for volunteers in all areas, but especially volunteer drivers, weekend volunteers, special interest
volunteers for adults and children
in the form of activities or support
groups. If anyone is interested in
these types of volunteer positions
please contact our office and speak
with someone about your idea!
SCVP cannot be at its best without
its volunteers so please call at 434292-1077 or fill out a volunteer
application on our website,
www.madelineshouse.org.
