AN ATTRACTIVE SOLUTION FOR CONTAMINANTS
THE INNOVATION: Organoclay® Mitigates Organic Contaminate Flow into Waterways near Remediation Sites
PRODUCT: For the traditional remediation of contaminated sediments in waterways, methods such as
dredging and sand caps are used to mitigate the contaminate flow into waterways which can be harmful and
damage the aquatic ecosystem. These methods provide widely varying results due to many environmental,
operational, and economic factors. Dredging is the removal by excavation of contaminated soil layers followed
by the subsequent transportation and disposal of those contaminated layers into a different locations. The
process can potentially lead to the resuspension or displacement of contaminated materials and is highly
invasive to the ecosystems. In addition, dredging increases the carbon footprint of the process through costly
transportation of contaminated sediments offsite.
An alternative to dredging, sand capping involves the placement of media over the contaminated sediment
bed to isolate and contain contaminates from migrating into waterways. Conventional sand caps require
thick, layers of sand which are costly to transport. CETCO Remediation Technologies offers Organoclay®,
a product for the capping of contaminated sites in waterways. Used in conjunction with the Reactive Core
Mat® (RCM) technology, the Organoclay® systems have an adsorptive capacity that provides for a thinner
cost-effective cap that also serves as a permeable treatment layer to mitigate the contaminate flow into the
waterway which can be harmful and damage the aquatic ecosystems. When used with the Reactive Core
Mat® (RCM), Organoclay® provides an alternative to dredging and conventional sand caps with a lower
carbon footprint that has less impacts on the environment and is less costly to perform.
