This policy is designed to support students from Years 8-12 to be successful and to encourage the development of good study and work completion habits. It reflects current assessment deadlines and submission date policy procedures of the
SACE Board of South Australia. While it is recognised that there are times when students, for acceptable reasons, are not able to meet deadlines, it is the expectation of the College that all students will submit all required work for assessment. Failure to submit will result in consequences designed to support the completion of work and to encourage the development of positive study habits.
• To outline clear expectations of student responsibility for their own learning;
• To promote equity and consistency across all learning areas;
• To ensure the standard application of procedures for students who work outside the guidelines of this policy.
Teachers are responsible for:
• Providing students with a semester Learning and Assessment Plan for each subject showing the number of tasks to be undertaken during that semester, the weight given to each task and the approximate due date for each task;
• Setting clear, realistic deadlines so that all students can achieve success;
• Monitoring the progress of each student to assist them in submitting work by the required deadline;
• Allowing for flexibility of deadlines based on students’ individual circumstances;
• Informing the relevant Home Group Teacher and Year Level Coordinator via the Task Completion database that a task has not been completed.
Students are responsible for:
• Submitting final assessment tasks by the due date and time as outlined by the Subject Teacher (this can be a hard copy or electronically as negotiated with the Subject Teacher);
• Ensuring their work is printed, ready for submission at the start of their lesson on the due date;
• If not present during the lesson that a task was due for submission, submitting work and providing notification of their absence on the first day the student returns to school. If a student doesn’t have a lesson in that subject the first day of their return, they must submit the task via the College Office with their note and/or certificate;
• If a student arrives late or leaves early on any day that a task is due for submission, they must still submit the work before departure that day via the College Office;
• For known absences (eg. external VET commitments, external school activity, etc), the student must negotiate an acceptable arrangement with the Subject Teacher such as submitting the task prior to the due date, or negotiating an extension via the normal extension procedures.

There are associated risks with using electronic ICT to submit assessment tasks. When using ICT, students are responsible for:
• Ensuring there is acknowledgement that the teacher has received the material that has been sent;
• Ensuring all draft and research material as required is available to be handed up with the assignment; Printed copies of draft work must be available on request;
• Saving their work in more than one location (e.g. hard drive of a home computer, a flash drive (USB) and on the College network). Home computer issues/malfunctions/internet accessibility are not acceptable reasons for failure to meet a task submission deadline;
• If students have negotiated with the teacher to email their completed work outside of lesson time, they must make sure that the email size does not prevent submission.
A student may negotiate with the Subject Teacher for an extension on a particular task if there are factors that impact on the successful completion by the due date.
The following reasons may be grounds for an extension being granted:
• Illness;
• Family/personal trauma;
• Authorised absences.
If a student’s circumstances fit one of these criteria, they must complete an Application for Extension Form which can be obtained from the College Office or from their Subject Teacher. The form must be submitted to the Subject Teacher a minimum of 1 day prior to the due date of the task. Please note that employment commitments and computer-related problems are not acceptable reasons for an extension being granted.
A student absent on the day of a test, or the date for submission of a summative task, must provide valid evidence of absence to the
Subject Teacher on their first day back at school. Valid evidence is:
• Years 8–10 students
– a note from a Parent/Caregiver in the College diary, or a certificate from a medical professional (i.e. doctor, psychologist etc);
• Years 11–12 students
– a note from Parent/Caregiver in the College diary for a first absence in that subject;
– a certificate from a medical professional for any subsequent absences.
If valid evidence is supplied, a missed test will usually be completed on the day the student returns to school or at a time negotiated with the Subject Teacher.
All students are expected to submit all required work by the due date.
• A student who does not meet a deadline, fails to submit an assessment task on time and does not provide valid evidence of absence, will have their Parents/Caregivers notified and will be required to attend two after school sessions to complete the work that has not been submitted.
• The after school work completion sessions will operate on Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 3pm-4pm. They will be staffed by teachers who will be rostered in the room each night.
• Attendance for these two sessions is designed to improve students’ understanding of the importance of completing assessment tasks.
• Students who attend these work completion sessions will only be permitted to work on approved school work.
• Students will complete the missed assessment task and submit it before the end of their second session in the week they are assigned to attend.
• To ensure equity for all students, the work of student’s in Years 8-10 will be marked on its merits and then penalized the equivalent of one grade demerit for being late.
• The SACE Board of SA requires that student work be assessed on its merits and marks applied accordingly. Any work submitted after the final deadline is required to receive an E or I grade, whichever is appropriate. Therefore, for Mount Carmel College
Year 11-12 students, the final ‘deadline’ will be at 4pm on the day that the student completes their attendance at their after school session for non-completion of an assessment task.
• Any student who fails to attend these work completion sessions will be issued with a Saturday morning detention and attend a meeting with their parent/caregiver, the student’s Year Level Coordinator and the Deputy Principal.
