After a hectic two weeks of preparations for the World Cup
in New Delhi, India, I was finally away after a 3.00am
start from my home in Murray Bridge to catch the 6.00am
flight to Sydney, where I was to meet up with John
Maxwell, David Nielsen, Craig Meuleman and Ben Kelley
a t the International Airport.
WE Icft Sydney at 11 3Oam and headed ollon our X 1 2
huur flight to llong Kong with hnsett and, as is the rase on
long flights, wc seemed to be const3nily caring. 'The flight,
however, was very good.
Arrived in Hong Kong for a three-hour stopover to change
over to United Airlines. this proved to he a minor headache
a s my luggage was only booked on t o Hong Kong as it was
above the weight limit due to a rather large First Aid kit
that we had made up, some cartridges, Australiana books
and gifts (the usual assortment of banners, ties, badges
etc.) that I had taken to present to the Indian Shooting
Federation's President and Secretary.
All baggage must go tl~ruu,;han X-ray machine in the

my suircnse and, atiilr we were waitirig in the Ctiitcd
Airlines Club, John related a story about how he once on a
trip overseas, found himself paged by the airport security
and was taken by the police into a deserted hangar where
his gun and baggage were sitting in the middle of the floor.
After he oroduced all the right naaerwork. a rather
e m h a n a k e d senior Police dffe; Gpeared'to he out for
staffs blood, leaving John in an unauthorised section of the
airport.
No sooner had John finished his story than we found
ourselves being called by some of the United staff and we
were all taken out to a large shed to unpack the guns for
inspection by the Police - and guess whose suitcase was
sitting out in the roadway by itself! After a n inspection of
the guns and bags it was found that John's gun in a large
hag was missing, hut was soon traced as i t had already
been loaded onto the plane and, a s for mine sitting out
there on the roadway, they just assumed it had fallen from
one of the carts and packed it on the plane.
The flight to New Delhi was uneventful, so most of the 5
112 hour flight was taken up with trying to get some sleep.
Some shooters (who will remain anonymous) were lucky
enough to find three seats to spread themselves out on.
Our arrival in New Delhi was somewhat of a culture shock
to us, but we were warmly welcomed by 1,epresentatives of
the National Rifle Association and were taken out to the
shooting range to put guns and cartridges into the armoury
and, finally a t 3.30am we arrived, under police escort, a t
the hotel t o book in. Some quick housekeeping in the
bathroom with cleansers brought from home, a quick spray
for any "lurking insects", and a t 4.30am I finally got to bed,
ending a very long day.

For the last 50 targets in Trap our three shooter felt much
more confident with the targets. The scores coming in were
much higher, Ben posting a 23, David a 21 and then John
shooting a 24.
After the last round it was found that John had to shoot off
for the 6th position in the final (a couple of the officials were

ground were levelled out, the targets would have been
travelling closer to 100 metres. They also did not allow for
head winds and this, I believe, contributed to the low scores
shot on the first day of competition.

The actual shooting range was quite a large complex,'
housing all of the disciplines, rifle, pistol and shot gun. The
shot gun section was of a reasonably high standard, with all
Materelli equipment.
The main Clubhouse would have been of a very high
standard when firstbuilt, but has deteriorated with time,
and the garden area appeared to all be watered by hand,
people with buckets of water doing that task.
The background a t the shooting range consisted of some
thicket-type bushes in the foreground and a magnificent
500-year old fortification to the old city behind this - the
built-up walls seemed to run on for miles and it was very
impressive.
We also had been assigned a young lady, Rashmi Nayar,
who looked after our transport, accommodation, helped with
official duties, and she met us on a daily basis to sort out
any problems we may have had.

Skeet shooting commenced a t 10.00am and David shot in
squad 1, and came in happily with a 25, hitting all of his

targets and really put the pressure on himself.
When the first day's rounds had been rumplered, Craig had

were feeling pretty confident and Clive wondered
just whathe had donewrong.
As i t was still reasonably early when we had finished a t the
shooting range we decided to get a taxi cab once more to get
some last-minute photographs of New Delhi, and we
ordered a taxi with a driver who could speak English so we
could get him to stop if we found something interesting.
Driving in the city just on dusk we passed a chap riding on
an elephant down the main street, so we got the taxi driver
to stop so we could take some photographs. To our surprise
he also got the elephant rider to stop, the rider then
instructed his elephant to kneel down and he motioned for
one of us to get up on the elephant's back (for a small fee of
course), so we hurriedly elected David to he IT and up he
went, thinking that the elephant's owner would he getting
up with him, but when the handler then got the elephant to
stand up, poor David atop of the elephant looked less than
impressed and the elephant made a few disapproving noises
as well! The rest of us madly snapped photographs while
killing ourselves with laughter, for we could just visualise
David and the elephant stampeding through the traffic on
the main street of New Delhi. After a good laugh and scenic
drive of the town by night, we headed back for an early
night, all feeling confident for the next day's competition.

By this time I don't know who was more excited, the boys or
me, with me rushing from one ground to another trying to
give them all moral support.
The 2nd round saw Clive shoot another 23, David a 24 and
Craig a 23.
This put Craig equal 2nd and David had to shoot off with
three others for the last three positions.
This was a breathtaking shoot-off as all shooters dropped a
target and they had to start all over again, and when
shooting doubles from stations 3 , 4 and 5, this is really high
pressure shooting. The final three were decided, with David
making the final 6, and I was really happy to see two
Australians in there, along with three from Kuwait and one
from Qatar.
The final was a real nail-biting affair, with all shooters
dropping a target except for Craig, who seemed to be as
confident as I have ever seen, just smoking his targets as he
went. At the end of the final, Gold went to Craig with a
magnificent 25 over the World Champion from Kuwait, with
Qatar coming in 3rd place. Our Team also won Silver, and I
didn't know whether to laugh or cry on seeing the joy in
Craig's face when he realised that he had just won the Gold
medal. The media immediately mobhed him and some 314 of

e story of Alan Brown, a most remarkable member of the
st Australian Gun Club.
Alan joined the West Australian Gun Cluh in 1986 when
he was 74 years old, an age when few people would
venture into a new sport. Alan took u p his new sport with
the enthusiasm of a youngster. Four days every week that
the Club was open, you would find Alan a t the traps
trying desperately to develop the skills to succeed. People
who helped him found that he was eager and very quick to
learn.
Alan recalls that people in the Cluh were very helpful. He
is particularly grateful to Lex Shipp, State Manager of
Winchester Australia, for helping him i n his early days
with trap shooting, and to Clive Shepherd who helped him
with skeet.
Alan practiced diligently a t both trap and skeet and his
shooting improved rapidly. He won his first trophy, the
Captain's trophy for the most improved shooter, in
September 1986, only a few weeks after he started
shooting.
Bv earlv next vear Alan was shootine verv" creditable

went to Kalgoorlie Eastern Goldfields Annual Shoot and
shot 94 in a 100 target double barrel event. Ile won the C
Grade and was promoted to A Grade.
He shot his first 50 straight in trap, and has since
repeated this many times. Alan was also progressing in
skeet, and was shooting good scores. He won many club
events i n both trap and skeet. Here are some of the
highlights of his shooting career:

Alan has been a n excellent club man, and has been a
generous financial sumorter of the Cluh. A nurservman
Ly profession, he arranged the planting of a bed ofannuals over the 50-metre length of the club house.
Several times each year the plants would be replaced so
that they provided a year-round feast of colour. He
continued this service for several years. I n recognition of
his services to the Cluh, Alan was presented with the Club
Man of the Year Award in 1994.
In the short time that Alan has heen shooting, he has used
many fine guns and is presently shooting a Perazzi trap
gun fitted with special Kemen barrels, and a Perazzi SO3
for skeet. He passed on some of his guns, including a
Beretta SO5 and a high-grade Perazzi, to his grandson
Mark McDonald, who started shooting a t the same time
a s Alan, and is now making his own mark in trap
shooting.
Alan really enjoys shooting and the company of people in
the sport. He has made many friends and is very popular
a t the West Australian Gun Club. He often says that he
regrets not taking up shooting a s a young man. One can
only wonder what he could have achieved if he had started
shooting in his twenties.
He i s now almost 85 years of age and still shooing
regularly. H e is slightly apologetic that he now shoots only
three times a week! A typical outing would he 25 skeet
and 50 trap. He frequently shoots 24 or 25 i n skeet and 48
or 49 in trap.
Alan believes t h a t his abilitv to shoot successfullv a t his
agc is due to a fitness routine that he has folluwe-d for
must of his: lifc. Ilis present routine consists of swimming
every day i n a n indoor heated pool.
Alan Brown has made a n important contribution to clay

Shooters from throughout Australia and overseas converged o n Brishane G u n Club during March to again confirm the
standing o f t h e Australasian-Pacific "Grand Prix" a s t h e undisputed "premier" international olympic discipline
c l a y target shooting competition i n t h e region.
Scores worthy of the world's best competitions were constantly
recorded during the week-long competition, which marked the third time
the "Grand Prix" has been conducted.
Visitors from America, Japan, New Zealand and throughout
Australia were amongst the field of in excess of 100 I.S.U. shooters who
contested the badge matches in Double Trap, Olympic Trap and
I.S.U. Skeet, the "Southern Cross Classic" competitions i n trap and
skeet, and the Australasian-Pacific "Grand Prix" events in all three

Weather conditions for the competition were near perfect for the
duration of the tournament, and no doubt contributed to the
standard of competition which was of a higher standard that any
witnessed in Australia for some time. In all cases, the scores recorded to
win the "Grand Plix" events were in excess of those corded to win the
National titles in Adelaide in 1996, a good indication that Brisbane's
facilities and ideal weather conditions bring out the best in
competitors to Ensure a good competition.
No doubt the standard of the competition, coupled with the fact that
Brisbane Gun Club's facilities will be totally upgraded within the
next month or so to include three brand new Rossini hopper-fed
Olympic Trap ranges and upgraded Speith I.S.U. skeet fields, will
auger well for future competitions. Brisbane's heavy calendar this
year includes the U.I.T. World Cup in June, inaugural Australian
Shooting Games and State I.S.U. Carnival in July, and the Olympic
Discipline National Carnival in October. The Australasian-Pacific
"Grand Prix" competition will again he conducted during the early
part of 1998 and hopefully will he acknowledged for the value this
important competition can play as part of our national team's
selection series, taking advantage of a major competition with a large
field a t home here in Australia.

had by all. Again the "Grand Prix" dinner was successful, with 100
people taking advantage of the opportunity to socialise over a
smnrgasbord dinner and a few drinks.
From a competition point of view, the 1997 .4ustralasian-Pacific
"Grand Prix" tournament provided some af the best competition
experienced for some considerable time. The perfect weather
conditions and attention to detail by LIE many of Lhe behind-thescene people all contributed to make the 1997 competition what it
was.
The Organising Committee and Committee of Brisbane Gun Club
would like to record a specla1 thanks far the continued support
received from the Winchester Division of Olin Australia, in
particular for their continued support of the Japanese Top Gun Club and
their efforts to again bring them to Brisbane. Winchester have also
continued to support the "Grand Prix" through their local
representative Bob Dupuy.
The Club's thanks must also be extended to Fuller Firearms for their
continued support and supply of competitor starting numbers and
Austral Gun Company, who this year organised the inaugural
"Perazzi" trophy for the best overall performance by a n international
visitor in OlympicTrap.
To the many local supporters also a big thanks. Paul and dndy
Clarkson, Tom and Thelma Meadows, Dan Mofitt and Lui Nuzzolese
have all now contributed to the growing list of perpetual trophies and
overall awards presented. The many hard working club members
who continue to make the "Grand Prix" what it h a s become, also a
deserve a vote of thanks for their efforts, a s do the Organising
Committee members who have given their time so often to do the
hard work.
P\.
Along the way, suggestions are often made a s to how a competition such

Maiura Park Miroku Challenee:
Strong winds, pelting rain, thunder and lightning certainly made
the shoot a real challenge (this is no exaggeration - I was there!).
Despite the weather being only fit for ducks, 10 squads of very
hardy(?] shooters turned up to compete.
The man of the moment mas Kym Chiaverini from Goulburn who
won the Miroku with a seore of 981100, Kym shot the first 50
targets clean when the conditions were so bad you could barely
see the targets, let alone hit them. Congratulations Kym on a
well deserved win.
Thank you to all the shooters who turned up and spent most of
the day \vet; despite this most people stayed cheerful and many

advised.
Series dates to note are 17th and 18th May, Brishane Olympic Trap, Double Trap and I.S.U. Skeet; 14th and 15th
June, Townsville - Olympic Trap, Double Trap; 22nd June,

Councillor James Gall did not seek re-election at the recent
Zone Annual General Meeting. His place has been taken by
Rex Davis from the Whitsunday Club and he can he contacted
on (079) 549 832 AH.
Peter Field did not seek to continue as the Zone Coach for the
Central Zone, and this position remains vacant at the time of
writing these notes. The Zone Coaching Seminar set down for
Clermont on 21st June has also been postponed.
The Zone Committee, in conjunction with Gladstone Club,
conducted a very successful Zone Trap Carnival recently, and
their Team for the State Carnival a t Roma in September
comprises Danny Casagrande, Peter Comino, Denis
McIntosh, Garry Darr, Rex Davis and J. Riggs.
The next State Championship to be contested in the Central
Zone will he the State Day Mixed Targets a t Gemfields on
12th July.
Northern Zone:
The Normanton Cluh are hosting the Zone Trap Carnival on
3rd and 4th May - a long way to travel, so it is hoped that

conjunction with their Annual Skeet Shoot on 21st and 22nd
June.
Disappointing for Bundaberg Club to have to call off their
proposed Open Shoot set down for the Labour Day weekend
holiday 3rd-5th May. Once a new date has been arranged,
notification will be forthcoming.
Western Zone:
Skeet shooters have a chance at a Miroku Challenge at the
Roma Two Day on 17th and 18th May. The Club have
extended their Skeet facilities with the opening of the Club
and by accepting a Miroku Challenge it is hoped that Skeet
shooters will really get hehind the Cluh and support them in
their endeavour to lift the profile of Skeet shooting in the
West.
Peter Jones has provided some results from the recent
Page 18
Norfolk Island Annual Shoot. Great to see the Anssie touring
party also figured in the results - those in the photograph
who certainly enjoyed their trip are left to right: Peter Jones
(Chinchilla), Graham Smith (Warwick), Brian Guthrie
(Toogoolawah),Bob Golden (Condamine), Bill McKechnie
(Brishane), Glen Reeves (Townsville),Tony Robb (Tara~vera),
Spike Scouller (Chinchilla) and Rowan Kilmartin (Gladstone).
Apparently very windy conditions resulted in only two
possihles heing shot for the entire week, but a great time was
had hy all. One of those possibles was shot by Peter in the
Championship sponsored by Ansett - h e didn't mention if it
was a 767 that he won!
Don't forget the Cunnamulla shot on 3rd and 4th May.

Special Guests for the weekend were our Atlanta medal winners Michael D~amand,Russell Mark and Deserie Wakefield. It was
interesting to note that this was the first occasion since Atlanta
that all three had been together in the one place.
On a lighter note - a slight case of panic set in when Michael and
Russell were awarded Order of Australia Medals in the Australia

been made, so a quick re-make ensured the initials O.A.M. were

May 1997
What a great way to start the weekend. Mark didn't
feature much after this.
The Single Barrel Trophy was next and again a great
shoot-off was necessary with Wayne Headon of Hay 58158
defeating A1 Guglielmino (wheelbarrow) of Griftith. The
final event for Saturday was the Lower Macquarie Double
Barrel Championship. Many possibles came and many
possibles fell a s nightfall quickly descended. The ladies
supplied a wonderful meal, so with full tummies we
settled to watch the final four shot i t out for the sash and
clothes dryer. Eventually a t around 9.00pm Rob
Thompson of Cobar stood alone on 2421242 from Steve
Atkins of Echuca 2411242 and Tom Turner J n r from
Cessnock on 2251226.
During this event a few shooters attained personal bests.
Phil Jackson from Gilgandra went from B Grade to AA
Grade 20 metres, Diarne Doyle from A to AA 20 metres,
Darryl Reed also A to AA 20 metres, a s well a s PB Break
of 150 targets straight.
Sunday morning, bright and sunny, the Double Barrel
Trophy again saw excellent results.
Steve Atkins' turn this time, shooting 1351135 to edge out
Wayne Hawkins, the vet from the hills, and again Tom
Turner coming in third.
The Single Barrel Championship followed and once again
Ian Merrick from Cessnock showed his skill by shooting
1031103 to put Roger Duthie into second with 1021103. The
100 being & PB for Roger in Single Barrel. John Headon
from Hay third with 72/73.
Pointscore Trophy followed and again Ian Merrick showed
the way with 1771177 taking his single barrel score to 162
straight. Alan Jones came second 1761177 and local
member Arthur Turner with 1671168.
The final event and Championship, and again to date no
shooter has won back to hack championships. The Double

On New Year's Day the members of Ballandean, Warwick, Texas
Clay Target Clubs and also throughout South-east Queensland and
northern New South Wales were saddened to hear of the passing of
Rod Middleton.
Here is a rrihute compiled by long-rim*.t'riend ;and ielluw clny targut
shutltsr Kevtn Lee on buhnlfof the nbovu.mentioncd Clm~bs.
I first met Rod as a clay target shooter in about 1951-1952. We have
been very good friends ever since.
Rod was one of the most consistent shots I have known. He was a
very deliberate shot, with a natural and easy style. E won many,
many championships including Commonwealth, State, Zone and
Club Championships. He also won many cash handicaps. I can
remember Rod shooting off 25 yards. He made the Australian Team
twice (Macintosh Shield), he also had a break of over 300 straight.
I think the highlight of Rod's shooting career was winning the
Commonwealth Single Barrel Championship with a score of 1561156.
To shoot 156 targets with a single barnel in the late 50's or early 60's
was unheard of. It may not seem such a big hreak compared to some
of the scores nowadays, but in the 50's and 60's targets were harder
to break, traps were irregular and threw wider angles and cartridges
were not as good, so it was a fantastic effort to shoot 156 single
barrel.
Rod always said clay target shooting was a gentleman's sport, and
that was the way he treated the sport of clay target shooting.
