Model RDS3 Swing Gate Valve
Overview
If flammable gas or vapor is present in the
atmosphere surrounding a diesel engine, it can
be ingested into the engine and become an
ungoverned fuel supply. This ungoverned fuel can
result in runaway engine overspeed potentially
leading to dangerous mechanical failure or
explosion.
The Roda Deaco RDS3 Swing Gate Valve is a
positive spring actuated air intake shutoff valve
that provides emergency overspeed shutdown of a
diesel engine. The RDS3 Swing Gate Valve can be
triggered to close which starves the engine of air
and shuts down the engine.

Operation
The Model RDS3 is a compact swing gate design
air intake shutoff valve available with electric,
pneumatic, or mechanical actuation. Actuation of
the Model RDS3 closes the valve’s sealing element
which shuts off intake air flow into the engine. The
RDS3 can be used in fully automatic or manual
shutdown systems.

Valve Selection
The RDS3 Swing Gate Valve can be used in
applications where the air intake line is 3 to 4 1/2
inches (76 - 114 mm) in diameter. The RDS3 Swing
Gate Valve can be mounted in vertical or horizontal
orientations and airflow through the valve can be in
either direction.
When specifying the valve note the clearance
requirements for the valve with the geometry of
the engine and intake line for your application.
Note that the valve reset handle is used only on
the mechanical and pneumatic actuated valves.
The reset handle is not required on the solenoid
actuated valve.

To accommodate the installation requirements
for the wide variety of diesel engine applications,
the size and attachment types on the valve body
and the valve cover are specified separately. The
valve attachments are available in several styles
including: hose, O-ring, V-clamp, flange, and
engine specific adapters.

The RDS3 Swing Gate Valve is available in several
standard sizes for intake air lines ranging from 3
to 4 inches (76 - 102mm) in diameter. Standard
sizes for hose, V-clamp, and O-ring attachments
are listed to the left. Additional sizes are available
to meet specific application requirements.

Valve Attachment Mechanism
The hose attachment is the standard attachment
mechanism. However, additional attachments
are available including O-Ring, V-Clamp, Flange,
and engine specific adapters. Examples are
shown below. To accommodate the installation
requirements for the wide variety of diesel engine
applications, the size and connection types on
the valve body and the valve cover are specified
separately.

Valve Features Selection
Valve Actuation Type
The RDS3 Diesel Engine Air Intake Shutoff Valve
valve has three actuation methods: pneumatic,
electric and mechanical. Please refer to the Roda
Deaco System Selection Guide for complete
descriptions of the systems to help determine the
proper actuation required for your application.
Electric Actuation
The electrically actuated RDS3 is an energize-toclose valve. It operates using either 12 VDC or
24 VDC power. The valve will automatically reset
after the engine stops and power is removed. The
electrically actuated RDS3 valve is designed for
use in the systems indicated below:

Pneumatic Actuation
The pneumatically actuated RDS3 is designed for
mechanical latching in the open position (engine
run) and air pressure actuated closure. The
pneumatically actuated RDS3 is reset manually.
The valve is designed for use in the systems

The mechanically actuated RDS3 can be operated
by using either a remote cable pull system or
by direct operator action on the valve. The
mechanically actuated RDS3 is reset manually.

The RDS3 Swing Gate Valve has three air intake
temperature range options to accomodate various
installation locations:
lStandard - natural aspirated or downstream
of turbocharger intercooler or aftercooler where air intake line temperatures may reach up to
221°F (105°C) at the valve
lHigh - downstream of turbocharger where air
intake line temperatures may reach up to
400°F (204°C) at the valve
lXHigh - downstream of turbocharger where
temperatures may reach up to 550°F (288°C)
at the valve
Valve Features Options
The RDS3 Swing Gate Valve has two options that
can be added individually or in combination to
meet the additional requirements for applications.
Pneumatic Reset
A pneumatic cylinder can be added to the valve to
provide remote reset capability for pneumatically
and mechanically actuated valves.

Proximity Switch
A proximity switch can be added to provide
indication of the position of the swing gate disk.
This is very useful in multiple valve applications
such as twin intakes to provide status indication of
both valves in the system to prevent operation on
a single bank of cylinders in an engine.

Actuation kits are provided with each system
sold. The actuation kit contains hardware
required to properly install and integrate the
specified shutdown system into the diesel engine
application. The kits, specific for each type of
system and application, can include items such as:

Installation Kits
Installation kits are also provided with each
system sold. The installation kit contains the
hardware required to facilitate the installation of
the Air Intake Shutoff Valve into a diesel engine
air intake line. Roda Deaco has hundreds of
different installation kits designed to meet specific
engine model and application requirements. The
kits can range from hose with clamps to custom
intake pipes, elbows, flanges, brackets, etc.
