Finding IVs and Dvs: IV: object of study, what is manipulated, selected to be different for different groups. DV: what you could to see an effect on, what is measured or observed -- This research ascertained the role of motivational style (extrinsic, intrinsic, amotivational) as predictors of behavioral persistence in a real-life setting. In this case, persistence was operationalized as number of optional and required activities completed. IV1: Motivational style 3 (extrinsic, intrinsic, amotivational) DV1: Number of optional activities completed DV2: Number of required activities completed -- Professor Hyde studies the effects that drugs have on animal activity. She used several types of rats including white, gray, and silver. She randomly assigned each type of rat to either 3 cc’s or 6 cc’s of Metacive and one hour later they were asked to run an exercise wheel and counted the number of revolutions in 10 minutes. IV1: Type of rat 3 (white, gray, and silver) IV2: Metacive dosage 2 (3 cc’s or 6 cc’s) DV1: Number of revolutions in 10 minutes -- A researcher did an experiment investigating the effectiveness of computer-assisted instruction. Half of the students received reading instruction using the new gamestyle instruction on the computer while half received the standard method not on the computer. He thought that any enhancement effects may differ dependent upon the student’s gender so he separately randomize a set of first grade girls to the two different conditions and a group of boys two conditions. He gave students a standardized reading test after the instruction to see whether they could read better. IV1: computer-assisted instruction 2 (game-style instruction, standard method) IV2: Gender 2 (male, female) DV1: Score on standardized reading test -- Can the type of thoughts one has before a public speech influence their anxiety level during the performance? IV1: Type of thoughts DV1: Anxiety level -- I read a study by a zoologist who compared the strength of chimpanzees to the strength of gorillas. Surprisingly, the study found no difference in their strength! IV1: memory pill (??) DV1: short-term memory capability -- Parents for years have expressed concern that listening to heavy metal music leads to negative emotional experiences, such as depression, in their children, but a fascinating study was recently reported suggesting that parents can relax. In the study, 80 participants were randomly placed into either a no-music group or a heavy metal group. Those in the no-music condition were instructed not to listen to music for one month. Those in the heavy metal group were instructed to listen to heavy metal music for two hours every day for one month. One month later, all the participants showed up to fill out a survey with many different rating questions so they were not aware that the hypothesis was about depression. …. IV1: presence of music (no-music, heavy metal) DV1: score of depression survey
