SECTION SAINT-MAURICE Multilevel Inverter Topologies with Reduced DC Link Voltages for Medium Voltage Drive Applications Prof. K. Gopakumar, FIEEE, FIETE, FNAE Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society Indian Institute of Science (I.I.Sc.), Bangalore, Karnataka, India ABSTRACT/RÉSUMÉ Recently, numerous interesting multilevel topologies have been reported for motor drive applications. However, to date, the most popular topology is the neutral-point clamped (NPC) three-level topology, especially for medium-voltage drives applications. This shows that the industry is still looking for viable alternative to this topology, with reduced power circuit complexity and increased reliability for medium-voltage drives applications. This specific lecture will focus on some of the recent work from my lab on five-level and nine-level inverter topologies, with reduced DC-link voltages along with common-mode voltage reduction for conventional as well as open-ended winding induction motor drives. This is followed by some recent work on multilevel topologies for drives, with a single DC -link, enabling multilevel back-to-back inverter operation for medium voltage drives. BIOGRAPHY/BIOGRAPHIE Dr. K. Gopakumar received his B.E. (Electrical Engineering) degree from the Indian Institute of Science (I.I.Sc.) in 1980. Later, he completed his M. Sc. (Engg.) (E.E.) in 1984 and Ph.D. (E.E.) in 1994 both from I.I.Sc. Dr. Gopakumar is currently a Professor and Head of the Department of Electronic Systems Engineering (DESE) – formerly known as the Centre for Electronics Design and Technology (CEDT), at I.I.Sc., Bangalore, India. He is also affiliated with the following professional societies: Fellow of the IEEE, Fellow of IETE (India), and Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineers (NAE). He is the winner of the prestigious IETE B. K. Bose Award for contributions to the area of power electronics and drives for high power applications. He is a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society. He also serves as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics.
