Western Illinois University holds the honorable distinction of
being the only non-military institution with permission to use
the Leatherneck name. In 1927, Western’s then head football,
basketball and baseball coach, Ray “Rock” Hanson, was granted
permission by the U.S. Navy to use the Marine’s bulldog
mascot, along with the name Leatherneck.
THE FIGHTING
LEATHERNECKS
At Western, Coach Hanson’s
quest was to build an athletic
tradition second to none,
using the Marine ethic as a
central force.

MIDWESTERN CHARM
“
I recently made the drive back
to Macomb, and I had a lot of
free time to reminisce about my
favorite memories. Macomb
might be a small, rural town
and not appear to have all the
amenities of a big city, but it has a
lot of unique things you can’t find
anywhere else.
Every time I left Macomb, I
found I couldn’t wait to return
to what I wanted most, to sit in
the soft brown leather arm chair
in the corner of The Old Dairy
while munching on the world’s
best buttered toast and watching
the folks of Macomb come and
go. I wanted to meander the town
square to exchange friendly small
talk. I wanted to spy the large
herd of deer that often prance
through town.
The things I wanted most were
those things so specific to
Macomb. Targets and Starbucks
are everywhere, but these things
are only in Macomb, and that
matters.

Communities (LLC) offer
students the option to live with
others who share common
interests or majors.
HOME AWAY FROM HOME
One of the most rewarding experiences of college life
is living on campus and making lifelong friendships
and memories. Nearly 4,000 students build strong
communities in Western’s traditional-style residence
halls.
ROOMMATE MATCHING
Living on campus is a crucial part of a student’s
academic and social success, which is why all freshman
and sophomore students (60 credit hours or less) are
required to live on campus.
FIRST YEAR EXPERIENCE
22
WIU has an exclusive Roommate Matching System
designed to better match and allow students to selfselect a roommate before moving to campus.
All freshman students live together in our First Year
Experience residence hall communities.
• Bayliss-Henninger
• Tanner
TRANSFER YEAR EXPERIENCE
Students transferring to Western can choose to live in our Transfer Year
Experience community in Thompson Hall or choose from one of our
other upper-division residence hall communities.

• Lincoln-Washington

Through the Pathways LLC,
students who are undecided
about a major will have the
opportunity to live with other
students who feel the same.
Throughout the semester,
programs will be offered to help
students discover which pathway
is right for them by exploring
students’ various interests, values
and major options.
FUEL FOR SUCCESS
Students will find a variety of
options for breakfast, lunch and
dinner at Western. Residence
hall dining centers offer awardwinning custom stations, such as
the West Side Noodle Company,
Chopped Salads, Mexican
Mongo, Mongolian Grill and
Rocky’s Western Wings. Western
also has convenience stores,
coffee shops and retail options in
the University Union, including
Burger King®, Sbarro®,
Einstein Bros. Bagels® and
Colonel Rock’s Bistro.
