LAWO - MARK IV Industries GmbH LAWO - Mark IV Industries GmbH Page 2 of 19 Operating Manual SMART-Control and SMART-Master 1. Introduction The LAWO destination displays are controlled by control units specially developed for this purpose, which have been designed to fit into a standard radio shaft in terms of size. SMART-Control 2. SMART-Control The LAWO control unit is the combination of a conventional control unit and the Master computer. The bus driver uses it to enter line and destination numbers. The display shows these numbers and further information as appropriate. Alongside the display is the slot for the PC-RAM-CARD which can be used to load the destination data and the operating program. The yellow/black button S2 is accessible through an opening in the top housing cover. The LAWO-control unit is the master for the mono-bus (alpha-bus), via which the linked displays receive information about the required destination (text or graphics). There is no IBIS carriage bus at its output! LAWO - Mark IV Industries GmbH Page 3 of 19 Operating Manual SMART-Control and SMART-Master 2.1 Entering line and destination numbers To enter line or destination numbers, the selection button L/Z must be pressed first. The reaction of this button depends on how the line number is linked to the destination text (tied-on, not tied-on or coded line number). In the case of a tied-on line number only a destination entry is possible, with a non tied-on or coded line number both line and destination entry, are possible. The selection of line or destination numbers is then carried out using the (+/-) buttons which are available for every stop. The respective number selection is confirmed by subsequent pressing of the OK button. This is a menu-controlled process on the display and is self-explanatory. 3. SMART-Master When a control unit with IBIS functionality is used, the Master computer forms the link between the IBIS carriage-BUS and mono-bus (ALPHABUS). On the IBIS-carriage-BUS side it is used as a slave and on the mono-bus side (ALPHABUS) as a master. Via the mono-bus (ALPHABUS) the connected display units receive the required (programmed) typeface / graphic in the same way as with the Smart-Control unit. Its standard dimensions (radio shaft) make it suitable for universal use. The LEDs (OK, ERR, TX and RX) on the front are used for diagnosis and/or as a status display for data entry via PC-RAM-CARD. The slot for this PC-RAM-CARD, which can be used to load the destination data and/or the operating program is also on the front. The yellow/black test button S2 is accessible through an opening in the top housing cover. 3.1 LED displays LED red LED yellow LED yellow LED green ERR TX RX OK Error; hardware error Flashing means: TX to IBIS-carriage-BUS active (transmission) Flashing means: RX to IBIS-carriage-BUS active (receiving) Flashing means: micro-processor is working LAWO - Mark IV Industries GmbH Page 5 of 19 Operating Manual SMART-Control and SMART-Master 3.2 Loading data using the PC-RAM-CARD With the aid of the data interface, both destination files and operating programs can be loaded via a PC-RAM-CARD. The loading process is started automatically when the PC-RAMCARD is inserted. Status messages (see Chapter 3.3) about the successful loading process are outputted with the aid of the LED CARD. LAWO - Mark IV Industries GmbH Page 6 of 19 Operating Manual SMART-Control and SMART-Master 3.3 Error messages during card download The following instructions or error messages are outputted by the loading program with the aid of ‘blink codes’ (red LED) on the card LED. It must be noted that in the event of a message, the LEDs on the front of the Smart-Master, red, green and 2x yellow do not have any particular significance. Reason Since the Smart-Control unit is equipped with a graphical display, it is possible to further develop the unit in such a way that further possible uses are created. These can be of direct or indirect use to the customer. The graphical display allows a dialogue between the operator and the unit. New functions can be set using menu control (e.g. a different language for the display messages) or the unit can forward any error states found in the destination system to a service technician. 2. Operation basics 2.1 Selection of the main menu The input buttons “units+“, “tens+” and “hundreds+” must be pressed together for approx. 2 seconds. Following this period, the operator first reaches the entry window of the menu control, which can be left again by pressing the “L/Z” button or . If despite the safety operation mentioned the menu control should be activated by accident, it can be quit in this way without entering the main menu. By confirming with the “OK” button the operator moves from the entry window to the main menu. 2.2 Operating principle The following operating principle is generally valid for the control unit: • The selection of a menu item is carried out by pressing the buttons on the far right “units+” (E+) and “units-“ (E-) • With the aid of the “OK” button the respective actions are started or a sub-menu requested. “OK” has a selection and confirmation function. • The “L/Z” or has an abort function. Using this, it is possible to return from sub-menus without starting any actions. L/Z is used to return to the next higher operating level. • The user is guided by inverse representation of the menu entries. An inverse represented menu entry becomes active when “OK” is pressed. • Arrows are also used to point out operating possibilities to the user e.g. when scrolling the menu. LAWO - Mark IV Industries GmbH Page 8 of 19 Operating Manual SMART-Control and SMART-Master 3. The main menu The main menu is made up of three entries: Settings Help Service Via “Settings” the service technician or customer can carry out certain settings on the unit. The display contrast can be changed on the spot, for example. The menu item “Help” gives another brief summary of how to use the unit. The “Service” item is primarily intended to provide help and diagnosis possibilities for service staff. 4. The “Settings” menu The “Settings” menu is used to change or adapt the features of the control unit. Adaptation to customer requirements is carried out using this button. The “Settings” menu offers the following possible selections: Display Adr Display contrast Display mode Language 4.1 Display Adr The contents of a display message are shown in the top half of the unit display. Up to software generation 4 the contents of the display with the smallest address within the mono-system were shown. This is usually the front with address 1. Sometimes, however, a customer does not want to see the front display, he would prefer to see the side display instead, for example, in order to be able to control the output of pulsed destinations or messages. From software generation 4 onwards it is now possible to select and represent any displays from the mono-system. All the displays configured in the operating data are listed under “Display Adr” and can be selected. LAWO - Mark IV Industries GmbH Page 9 of 19 Operating Manual SMART-Control and SMART-Master Example: With a “normal” mono-system with front address 1, side address 2 and rear address 3, the following message will appear on the unit display: Please select address: Recog.: <1> <2> <3> Confirm: OK, Abort L/Z In this example, the contents of the display with address 1 are shown on the unit display. The arrows pointing upwards and downwards indicated that the buttons “units+” and “units-“ can be used to select other addresses. The inverse representation of the address number then changes accordingly. OK is used to confirm selection of the message that is to appear on the unit display. Once menu control has been quit, the selected message is shown on the unit display. L/Z is used to quit the menu item without making any change. The display address is stored internally and evaluated during every unit start-up. 4.2 Display contrast During production of the control units the display contrast is adjusted to provide as optimum a representation as possible. Nevertheless, the customer could wish to change the contrast value. When the entry “Display contrast” is selected, a sub-menu opens with the following contents: Contrast selection Factory setting 4.2.1 Contrast selection “Contrast selection” is used to reach the respective setting window: Change: +, 90% Confirm: OK, LAWO - Mark IV Industries GmbH Abort: L/Z Page 10 of 19 Operating Manual SMART-Control and SMART-Master The buttons E+ and E- are used to change the contrast, starting from the basic factory setting. E+ and E- are used to strengthen or weaken the contrast. A bar clearly indicates the changes, at the same time the contrast value is indicated as a percentage. The end of possible strengthening is reached at 100%. The change in contrast has a direct effect on the display, i.e. when the E- is continually pressed the contrast continually becomes weaker. To prevent this happening to such an extent that the display is no longer visible and the user has no orientation, a limiting value is programmed and cannot be undermined. This value is currently 45 %. After the “OK” button has been pressed, the set value is taken over and stored. This contrast value is valid until another value is set or a reset is carried out on the basis of the factory setting. “L/Z” can be used to leave this menu item without the changed value being stored. 4.2.2 Factory setting The unit is set to a basic value in the factory. This is stored and is no longer changeable. Even after changes have been made to the display contrast the menu item “Factory setting” can always be used to reset the unit to its initial state. 4.3 Display mode This menu item is used to change the representation mode of the messages on the display. The following possibilities can be selected: Standard Full graphics Text mode 4.3.1 Standard (Standard-Graphic-Mode) Previously, this mode was generally used to represent the message contents on the display. The message is illustrated 1:1 on the display, orientation point is always the top left-hand corner. In the case of displays with low resolutions u to 17 lines and a maximum of 126 columns, the message content is displayed very well, since this takes place according to pixels. This is somewhat different with high-resolution displays, however, since in this case only a section of the message content can be displayed. LAWO - Mark IV Industries GmbH Page 11 of 19 Operating Manual SMART-Control and SMART-Master 4.3.2 Full graphics With this representation mode the complete display resolution is used to represent the message content. The output of destination, line and message numbers in the bottom third of the display is suppressed, leaving more lines available for the representation. By resetting the operating parameters (menu factory reset), the unit is reset from full graphic mode to standard graphic mode. 4.3.3 Text mode In text mode the message contents are no longer represented 1 : 1 on the display but are outputted as an alphanumerical character chain. The format of the individual characters is lost, but the complete contents of the message display are shown in text form. Two-line edited messages are displayed as two-line texts. The disadvantage of this method of representation is that it can only show text characters, not symbols such as “school children”, for example. The text mode is active as soon as the main menu has been quit and is stored in the unit. Resetting the operating parameters (menu Factory Reset) returns the unit from the text mode to the standard graphics mode. In the CUSTOM.CFG file the number of the address to be shown on the display has to be entered under “Transmission address”. In addition, the text to be represented must also be marked in the TED900/TEDPlus as a return transmission text. 4.4 Language At the moment there are three languages to choose from: German English French Directly after a language has been selected, the menu texts will appear in the chosen language. This menu language is valid until another language is chosen or the unit is reset to the operating parameters set in the factory. Following a factory reset the language is set to German. LAWO - Mark IV Industries GmbH Page 12 of 19 Operating Manual SMART-Control and SMART-Master 5. The “Service” menu As the menu header already states, this part of the menu control has been designed with support for on-the-spot customer service in fault analysis in mind. The customer can of course also choose this mode and carry out diagnosis himself. It could result in problems being analysed and solved on the spot without a member of service staff having to intervene. The “Service” menu is made up of five menu items: Test pattern Information Slave info 50% zoom Factory reset 5.1 Test pattern If the “test pattern” menu item is selected by pressing “OK”, all displays will initially be switched to “yellow” and the following message will appear on the unit display: Yellow/black test activated! End/back with L/Z The display will now change in cycles: Yellow Chessboard Inverse chessboard Dark With LED outer displays the yellow part is not applicable. This test mode is ended by pressing the “L/Z” button. The outer displays now show the text that had been displayed before the yellow test was activated. The message in the display returns to the “Service” menu. LAWO - Mark IV Industries GmbH Page 13 of 19 Operating Manual SMART-Control and SMART-Master 5.2 Information The “Information” menu item provides specific data about the operating program and the configuration data with which the unit works. A sub-menu has been introduced to make data output clearer. Data can be requested selectively via the following menu items: Software version Info start-up code Resolution config Bus data Date of bus data Form info 5.2.1 Software version The version number of the operating program loaded appears in the display, e.g. “SV 4.0”. At the same time, the known “boot up message” is displayed on the front display or the display with the smallest configured address. This also contains the software version, addresses, bus type and form information. The “boot up message” remains visible in the display until this menu item is quit again. Up to now, this message was shown during the display boot up phase for a period of only a few seconds. With this test mode, the status message can now be repeated at any time. There is no longer a time limit. If service work should be necessary, it is now possible to walk round the vehicle slowly and register the messages on the displays. Return to the “Information” menu using “L/Z”. The status message is deleted on the displays and they are returned to their original state. 5.2.2 Info start-up code This is used to output the version number of the so-called start-up code. The start-up code must not be confused with the actual operating program. It controls the loading of operating programs and operating data, for example. The current version of the start-up code has to be greater than or equal to 4.0. 5.2.3 Resolution config This menu item is used to check configuration data. The resolutions of all the displays defined in the Custom.cfg file can be requested. A comparison between the configured display resolutions and the displays actually present is thus possible directly at the unit. LAWO - Mark IV Industries GmbH Page 14 of 19 Operating Manual SMART-Control and SMART-Master Example: Let the following displays be defined in Custom.cfg: Front, Address 1, resolution 16 x 126 Side, Address 2, line number box with resolution 16 x 28, text box with 16 x 112; Rear, Address 3, resolution 16 x 28 With this selection, the control unit will show the following when the menu item is selected: A<1> A<2> A<3> F1: 0x0 F2: 16x126 F1: 16x28 F2: 16x112 F1: 0x0 F2: 16x28 5.2.4 Bus data With the selection of “bus data” the bus name and type can be requested. This makes it possible to find out whether data configured for a particular vehicle have actually been loaded or not. This can be helpful if a customer operates several different types of bus. Configuration data loaded by mistake can be recognised easily. The outer displays react as described in section 5.2.1. 5.2.5 Date of bus data This menu item is used to request the date the configuration was drawn up. It is often a problem that a customer receives new configuration data, e.g. extended destination entries, and these have to be loaded into the control unit using the RAM card. The stored configuration date allows clear recognition of whether the necessary data have really been loaded successfully or not. 5.2.6 Form info This menu item analyses the operating data in more detail and provides further information about the configured data. It is mainly to be used to support LLE configuration specialists. The following information is displayed: Configuration files: e.g. 3 Number of fonts: e.g. 10 Form types: e.g. Z-2, L-3, M-0 In this example 3 displays are configured. 10 different fonts were used to represent the destination texts and line numbers. 2 destination text forms exist (e.g. for front and side display). 3 line number forms (e.g. coded line number for front, side and rear) but no message form. In other words, message operation has not been foreseen for this exemplary vehicle. A specialist can use this menu item to analyse the data loaded on-the-spot. LAWO - Mark IV Industries GmbH Page 15 of 19 Operating Manual SMART-Control and SMART-Master 5.3 Slave test The “Slave test” menu provides possibilities for analysing the mono-system. The control unit can recognise the presence of all the slave types currently usable in LAWO mono systems. When the “Slave test” menu item is selected, a sub-menu opens with the following content: Slave – Type, Adr. Slave – System adr. 5.3.1 Slave – Type, Adr. This is a test function which determines and outputs the type of slave installed. All the slave types currently used in mono systems can be recognised, these are: XY5-LLE, XY10-LLE, XY5-TOPFORM, LCD-LLE, LCD-TOPFORM, LED-LLE Example: In a mixed mono system an LED display is used for the front (address 1) and 1 LCD display used each for the side (address 2) and rear (address 3). If the “Slave type” menu item is selected, the following information will be given if the system is working correctly: LED-LLE, Adr. <1> LCD-LLE, Adr. <2> <3> The types and addresses outputted are continually monitored via the mono-bus. If in the above example the slave of the rear display were to switch off due to an error, e.g. a connector problem, the address number <3> would no longer appear. This function can thus be used to check which types of slave are really present in a mono system and which addresses they are set to. LAWO - Mark IV Industries GmbH Page 16 of 19 Operating Manual SMART-Control and SMART-Master 5.3.2 Slave – System adr. The “Slave addresses” menu item allows a comparison between the display addresses configured in the Custom.cfg file and the addresses actually present and/or the set slave addresses. Example: The following was configured in the Custom.cfg file: front – Adr 1, right-hand side – Adr. 2, rear Adr. 3, left-hand side Adr. 4. Let it be assumed that the slave on the left-hand display is faulty. Selection of the “Slave addresses” menu item would result in the following in this case: Config. <1> <2> <3> <4> Recogn.: <1> <2> <3> This menu item is particularly suitable for comparing a configuration with a real mono system. This makes it easy to establish on the spot whether the display has been forgotten to be configured or addresses do not concur. In a correctly configured and functioning system the address numbers in both lines will concur. 5.4 50 % - zoom The graphical unit display has a resolution of 122 x 32 Pixel. In the case of high-resolution outer displays only a section can be shown on the unit display. Sometimes it can be meaningful to show the whole display to check what it looks like. The graphics test mode “50%-zoom” has been introduced for this purpose. When this menu item is selected, a sub-menu opens with the following entries: Switching this test mode on and off has been designed as a so-called “toggle function”, i.e. when the confirmation button “OK” is pressed, the display switches between the zoom and the normal display. LAWO - Mark IV Industries GmbH Page 17 of 19 Operating Manual SMART-Control and SMART-Master 5.4.1 Activating zoom If the zoom function is not activated, the following display message will appear when the “50% zoom” menu item is selected: 50% zoom is not activated! Zoom ON with OK Abort: L/Z After confirmation of “OK” or “L/Z” the display returns to the Service menu. The zoomed display is not shown until the menu control has been quit. For example, a front display with a resolution of 180 x 26 now appears on a display area of 90 x 13. The individual characters become less focussed with this method, on the other hand it is possible to gain an overall impression of the display. Now any destinations, lines and messages can be selected and controlled on the display in zoom mode. It is no longer necessary to get out of the vehicle and check the display every time a new entry is made. Since this zoom mode is a test function, e.g. to check whether certain entries have been edited correctly, this device state is not stored permanently. When the vehicle voltage is switched off this setting is lost, i.e. when the vehicle is switched on again, the display is shown in the original graphics mode or in text mode again. It is of course also possible to quit the 50% zoom mode without switching the vehicle voltage off. LAWO - Mark IV Industries GmbH Page 18 of 19 Operating Manual SMART-Control and SMART-Master 5.4.2 Deactivating the zoom First of all the sub-item 50 % zoom must be selected in the Service menu. If the zoom mode is active, the following display message will appear: 50 % zoom is activated! Zoom OUT with OK Abort: L/Z When “OK” is pressed the unit returns to the “Service” menu. When the user leaves the menu control, representation of the display contents will be in the mode set before the 50 % zoom was switched on (back to standard graphics, full graphics or text mode). 5.5 Factory reset This menu item is used to return to the operating parameters set in the factory. Invalid operating parameters cannot be set at all. The advantages of this menu item is that all the adjustable operating parameters can be reset to standard values without having to call up all the individual menus. The following operating parameters are reset: - Customer-specific display contrast reset to basic factory adjustment - Language to German - Zoom and text representation to standard graphics representation - Display address set to the first configured address LAWO - Mark IV Industries GmbH Page 19 of 19
