NATURAL . . . . . . . . . . . . . .DAYLIGHTING ......................... P assivent market a range of natural daylighting products including tubular rooflights, conventional rooflights, combined rooflight/ventilators and hybrid lighting systems. Advantages ● Highly effective at delivering light into internal and badly-lit spaces without windows. ● Energy saving - reduces the need for artificial lighting. ● Wide range of applications - houses, flats, schools, hospitals, commercial, industrial buildings, care homes, nursing homes and student accommodation. ● Suitable for both new-build and refurbishment projects. ● Meet the thermal requirements of the latest building regulations. ● Hybrid natural and artificial lighting solutions. Sustainability The sun is a sustainable light source, and natural daylight can make a significant contribution to sustainable building design. Rooflights are an effective and efficient means of maximising natural daylight in dark areas, often virtually eliminating the need for supplementary electric lighting during the day. Passivent natural daylight systems, used as a complement to artificial lighting, can considerably reduce the annual energy consumption of any building, thereby reducing CO2 emissions. Proven benefits of natural light Scientific studies have shown the positive benefits of natural daylight for health and wellbeing in a range of applications. The CIBSE Office Lighting Guide states that Natural Daylight is an almost universal worker requirement. When given a choice, most people prefer a working environment with daylight to one without. It references documented evidence confirming that excluding daylight leads to increased numbers of complaints about the working environment, and may adversely affect productivity. The Daylight Workplace Regulations state that “The lighting in every workplace shall, as far as is reasonably practical, be by natural light.” BRE Environmental Assessment Method The benefits of natural daylighting are recognised by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM). BREEAM Modules cover Schools, Offices, Healthcare, Retail and Industrial buildings. These buildings are then rated on a scale of PASS, GOOD, VERY GOOD or EXCELLENT. Passivent natural daylight systems can contribute to the credits available under the Health and Wellbeing Section HW01 and the Energy Section E01. 2 ....................................... ................................................. .......................... Measurements were taken over four to six month periods during the summer/ autumn in all natural light conditions ranging from bright clear skies to overcast conditions. Internal view of different diameter tubular rooflights under test This comprehensive monitoring has for the first time provided accurate, realistic and reliable performance data for tubular rooflight systems including direct and diffuse lighting conditions. The research is subject of a published paper entitled “Optimisation & design of ducted daylight systems: 2010” which is specific to Passivent systems only. External lux sensor with shade ring for measuring diffused light levels Typical light levels The light output from the Sunscoop system depends on the size and length of tubing, offset angles if any, the external sky conditions and light levels measured in lux. The distribution of the light in the room depends on the diffuser type and the wall, ceiling and floor reflectances. A sophisticated in house computer programme has since been developed to accurately predict light levels of Sunscoop systems, based directly on the SRI and BPD monitoring. Monitoring of three tubular rooflights simultaneously Siting Where possible the roof-mounted glazing should be located on a south-facing slope to gain the maximum amount of daylight under both direct and diffuse conditions. Factors which need to be considered when siting a Sunscoop include: - Location of the room to be lit and suitable position of the ceiling diffuser. - Roof space obstructions. - Proximity of other buildings, trees etc, which may cast shadows at certain times of the day or year. SUNSCOOP™ BUILDER SOFTWARE Passivent Sunscoop & Airscoop Builder has been purpose designed to interface with EDSL’s established Tas building thermal analysis tool, which is the first dynamic simulation modeling (DSM) of its kind to be approved for both Building Regulation Approved Document L2 and the Energy Performance Certificate. The Passivent programme adds a further dimension to the Tas Building Designer system, which already calculates performance taking into account the longterm dynamics affecting the building according to its location and orientation. Passivent Sunscoop Builder enables users readily to model the building daylight factor to BRE methodology, taking account of Passivent Sunscoops and Sunstracts. It also enables calculation of the number and size of Sunscoops required to achieve a given internal illuminance, enabling their associated impact on energy and carbon performance to be assessed System layout Sunscoop systems can pass through a roof space or other void. For maximum effectiveness the tubing should be as straight as possible. However, since it is often impractical to site the ceiling diffuser directly below the roof-mounted glazing, the tubing system allows an offset by means of an elbow. It is adjustable up to 30º from vertical. Other elbows can be used but monitoring has shown that these will adversely affect performance. .......................................................................................................... 5 ......................... ......................... UNIT ................... ™ T he Passivent Sunscoop iPSV™ system is designed to provide both natural daylight and ventilation to bathrooms, toilets, kitchens, en suites and other similar areas, in both domestic and commercial applications. Natural daylight enters through a roof mounted dome and is reflected down the highly reflective tubing through a Skyview ceiling diffuser. This innovative diffuser consists of a grid of fresnel lenses which provides a wider spread of light without excessive losses and enables the sky to be viewed. Ventilation is controlled by the ‘intelligent’ extract operated by a series of nylon bands, which respond to humidity levels and regulate the size of the air opening. TT9 Versatile tile ventilator Utilising a separate ducting system allows optimum performance from both units - the shortest possible length to maximise natural daylight through the ceiling diffuser and a separate duct for the extract to optimum length for the stack effect. Low profile glazing on Universal tile flashing Flexible ducting (support and insulation omitted for clarity) Ceiling (insulation omitted for clarity) 10 SR 98 Mirror reflective tube guides daylight down to the ceiling diffuser (insulation omitted for clarity) Key features ● No electrical connection or power source is required so the system is naturally energy efficient. ● Intelligent humidity controlled extract responds automatically to changes in relative humidity giving greater ventilation when humidity is high whilst preventing unnecessary ventilation and heat loss when humidity is low. ● 24 hour condensation control with gentle extraction - operates all day and every day as required combating condensation and mould growth. ● Completely silent in operation. ● Complies with the requirements of Approved Document F. ● Minimal maintenance - no mechanical components to go wrong. No costly solar panels or battery backups. ● Automatic response and no operating controls, ideal for special needs applications. ● Tests by Building Research Establishment (BRE) have shown an intelligent passive stack system incorporating a humidity sensitive extract gives a 15 - 40% saving in ventilation heat loss dependent on occupancy levels. ● Thermal modelling by De Montfort University has shown that the intelligent passive stack system operates effectively even in summer months and internal bathrooms. The research also demonstrated effectiveness even in very airtight dwellings. ● Can be supplied with optional integral electric light fitting which takes a low energy bulb to avoid the need for additional light fitting for night time use. NATURAL DAYLIGHT SOLUTIONS . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .SUNSCOOP . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .HYBRID .............................. ™ T he Sunscoop™ hybrid is a 350mm unit with a daylight controlled dimmable low energy compact fluorescent luminaire integrated into the ceiling diffuser assembly to provide a more consistent light level despite changing external daylight conditions. The CIBSE Lighting Guide 10 - Daylighting states that: “Case studies have shown that in a conventionally daylit commercial building the choice of control can make 30-40% difference to the resulting light use”. The Sunscoop hybrid has a control unit which controls both occupancy and daylight levels, maximising the energy savings from lighting. Key features ● The Sunscoop hybrid incorporates a light sensor which is programmed to turn on when the light level inside the room drops below a certain level. ● Luminaire turns on with optional ‘soft start’, allowing a gradual increase in light output and adjustment to the required level. ● The Sunscoop hybrid incorporates a lighting controller, lux sensor and PIR presence detector. ● When the unit determines there is adequate natural light available, the lamp is automatically turned off. ● When light levels fall, the lamp is switched back on and its output continues to be regulated by the daylight sensor. ● The programmable PIR presence detector will turn off the lamp when the space is unoccupied irrespective of the light level. Ceiling Diffuser / Luminaire The unit comprises a 350mm standard diffuser with option for Skyview type. The adjacent luminaire features a white powder coated spun aluminium bezel and a diamond faceted vacuum metallised aluminium reflector housing a dimmable 26W compact fluorescent lamp. Sensor and control gear are pre-fitted. Sizes 350mm diameter unit contains one downlight, which at full capacity produces an output of 1800 lumens. Appearance White ABS ceiling diffuser ring to encompass both Sunscoop diffuser and downlight assembly. Performance The sensor which is looking directly downward continously monitors the light level reflected back to the ceiling and regulates the output of the compact fluorescent lamp to maintain an approximate pre-determined light level. Setting the predetermined light level requires the unit to be commissioned by a Passivent Mastercare Installer. Note: Since daylighting and room conditions can change continuously, the lighting level achieved may vary to some extent from the pre-set level. 12 ................................................................... Passivent can advise on size of Airstract terminal in relation to volume of air movement required, likely external conditions and internal temperatures. Data from independent testing is available on request. Impact strength The unit has been subjected to large soft body impact testing by BRE and may be considered non-fragile to HSG 33. It will resist a soft-body impact of at least 1200 Joules. Fire spread: internal and external Ratings to BS 476: Part 7: 1987 are: Class 1 for internal surfaces of the upstand and frame, and Class 1Y for the polycarbonate glazing. Under Building Regulations Approved Document B4 paragraph 15.7, a polycarbonate rooflight with a Class 1 rating may be regarded as having an AA designation for external fire spread. Weather resistance Driving and deluge rain resistance demonstrated by test. Biological resistance 4mm screen in cowl excludes large insects. Thermal insulation The upstand and double/triple-skin glazing give good thermal insulation and minimise the risk of condensation. Our Technical Department can provide computer calculations of U-values for given sizes in different roof constructions to comply with Building Regulations Part L 2010. Light transmission For daylight areas see dimensions table. Average visible light transmission for 3mm glazing: clear 92%, diffused 85%, and bronze 50%. Clear glazing allows the greatest amount of daylighting, making it ideal when seeking passive solar gain. Diffused glazing diffuses the light and cuts down shadows and bright spots. Bronze glazing provides a good combination of light transmission with greater control of passive solar gain.
