Welcome to the second Cambridge Publishing Management newsletter Usually December is a quiet month for us, as our publisher clients wind up for Christmas, but this year there was a last-minute buzz of activity with a hectic round of sales meetings, which we hope will result in some exciting new projects. There were also opportunities to catch up with existing clients; it is always good to meet up with those we have predominantly telephone and email contact with – especially if it involves delicious food! Please do get in touch if you have a project for 2013 that you would like to discuss with us. A challenging project by Tom Lee The East of England Ambulance Service Trust is responsible for emergency care across the 7,500 square miles of six counties, answering more than half a million 999 calls a year. The end of 2012 saw CPM’s editorial team working closely with Tracy Nicholls and John Martin, the Trust’s Clinical General Manager and Consultant Paramedic, to produce its indispensable (at least for ambulance crews!) Clinical Manual 2013. This project – CPM’s first foray into the world of high-end medical textbooks – came about following an approach from Dick Warner, Managing Director of the world-renowned Class Publishing, who had agreed to publish the manual for the EEAS. Dick had already commissioned a highly skilled designer/typesetter, but needed an experienced packager (i.e. us) to edit the text, co-ordinate the layout, provide quality assurance, convert the finished project to a digital format and, above all, liaise between the multifarious parties involved. This was no small ask. read more Click here to read the testimonials. After an early career spent in London as an editor of adult illustrated non-fiction, I moved to Wayland Publishers in Hove as a commissioning editor of children’s educational books. I then spent a few years working as a freelance editor, writer and project manager, mostly for children’s educational publishers, but also project managing reports and publications for the University of Cambridge Press Office. I joined CPM in 2005, adding travel, ELT and academic books to my editorial experience. In addition to project managing titles, I head up the editorial department, managing the team’s workload, monitoring schedules and budgets, and helping to quote on and plan new projects. I have had 37 years of experience within print and publishing and joined CPM over 12 years ago. As Senior Mac Operator, I am responsible for checking all files received from clients and ensuring that the InDesign template is correctly set up. I liaise with the client’s production department to ensure that the print-ready PDFs comply with the printer’s specification. I’m also in charge of creating our ebooks. Out of work I volunteer with Girlguiding UK and I enjoy reading, cycling and world travel. Winter Wordfest I’d heard about Cambridge Wordfest before and often meant to look into it, but – as with so many good intentions – failed. This year, I was determined to put that right. I am so glad I did. I thoroughly enjoyed every one of the seven sessions I attended and just wish I had had the stamina for more. Here's what I learned... read more Page 1 of 5 Cambridge Publishing Management January 2013 Newsletter 23/01/2013 12:49 Industry news & events http://us5.campaign-archive2.com/?u=be155dce7c3596186afaa9954&id=96babf244e&e=9cce8f2aed Page 2 of 5 Costa Book Awards 2013 click here Earlier this month the five category winners of the Costa Book Awards, one of the UK's most prestigious and popular literary prizes, were announced. Book review by Jackie Dobbyne The Return by Victoria Hislop I loved Victoria Hislop’s 2005 novel, The Island, and therefore was excited to learn that she was coming to Ely to talk about her latest novel, The Thread. Victoria was very engaging and her love for Greece was palpable so, like a groupie, I bought the book and queued up for her to sign it. Victoria was very engaging and her love for Greece was palpable so, like a groupie, I bought the book and queued up for her to sign it. However, being an orderly sort of person, I decided I needed to read the interim novel first so bought The Return also. An impromptu holiday in Istanbul provided the opportunity to read it. We will also be extending our links with the community over the coming months by working with a local school to offer a publishing experience to a small group of sixth formers and a two-week placement to individuals. We hope that the group will be able to experience the full book packaging experience with ‘A day in the life of a publishing management company’ covering marketing, editorial and production. Book fact - a guilty secret According to a survey from 2009 for World Book Day, 1984 tops the list of books people claim falsely to have read. War and Peace, Ulysses, the Bible, Madame Bovary and A Brief History of Time were also among the list of unread books. Indeed 65% of respondents admitted they had lied about reading the great works of literature. At CPM we understand that your book means the world to you.
