Lean-Burn Natural Gas: The Way Forward
For Standby Applications.
Diesel generator sets have long been the traditional choice for standby power
applications. Now with advanced control technology, lean-burn natural gas solutions
from Cummins ESB provide a cleaner, more cost-effective option - offering lower
total cost of ownership (TCO) and reduced emissions to meet ever more stringent
standards worldwide.
4
Lean-burn equals clean burn
Reduced maintenance expenditure
Our lean-burn gas fueled generator sets offer
a key benefit over diesel counterparts – lower
emissions that make them a cleaner standby
alternative. Operating on a lean mixture of fuel
and air, they produce up to 5 times less nitrogen
oxides (NOx) output than comparable diesel
generator sets and near-zero particulate matter
(PM). The result: they exceed US EPA emissions
standards without the use of Selective Catalyst
Reduction (SCR) after-treatment systems often
required in diesel models, which can cost as
much as the diesel standby generator set alone.
Our lean-burn gas fueled generator sets
require less scheduled maintenance than diesel
generator sets, with extended intervals between
recommended oil changes helping to drive down
long-term maintenance costs. And, because no
on-site fuel storage is required, environmental
concerns are minimized as well.
Uninterruptible performance
Fuel supply simply isn’t an issue with natural gas
generator sets. Fueled by gas pipelines – the most
reliable of utility sources – Cummins gas generator
sets provide uninterruptible 24/7 performance
without the risks that come with deliveries of
diesel fuel, such as disruptions caused by extreme
weather or transport problems.
Cleaner, Greener And Cost-Effective Power
Ideal For Hybrid And Dedicated Lean-Burn
Installations.
Lower fuel costs, lower total cost
of ownership
Natural gas has a substantially lower cost per
unit of energy than diesel fuel, translating into
significant savings in cost-per-run-hours as the
table shows. Even if a natural gas generator
set runs for only 50 hours in a year, the cost
differential can deliver an annual saving of $7,300.
Add this to other long-term maintenance savings
and the result is a considerably lower TCO.
No fuel storage issues
In diesel standby applications, critical care
facilities such as hospitals may be legally required
to store 24 hours’ capacity of fuel onsite, holding
it in storage vessels that use valuable space and
add to maintenance costs. Diesel fuel also has
storage life limitations, with the risk of microbe
and moisture build-up contaminating the fuel.
Additionally, fuel storage vessels are at risk of
rupture or spillage during transfer, which can pose
particular dangers in sensitive environments such
as hospitals, schools and water treatment plants.

Lean-burn gas and diesel for
reliable hybrid solutions
When you need to extend a diesel standby
system in any critical or non-critical application,
it makes sense to integrate Cummins lean-burn
gas fueled generator sets to create a hybrid
installation. While lean-burn gas fueled generator
sets cannot meet the 10-second starting and
load acceptance limits imposed in some critical
healthcare applications, hybrid installations
answer the challenge – with diesel power systems
assuming the 10-second start life safety loads,
and the gas generator sets assuming the non-life
safety loads within 30 seconds.
Hybrid lean-burn natural gas and diesel solutions
deliver the best of both worlds: dependable
power and non-reliance on a single source of fuel
together with the benefits of lean-burn natural
gas – decreased TCO, minimal onsite fuel storage
requirements and reduced environmental impact.
In addition, both lean-burn gas fueled generator
sets and diesel generator sets can be paralleled
without difficulty.
