Rehabilitation II 3 The University of the West Indies Section of Physical Therapy Department of Basic Medical Sciences Telephone: 927—2235 Fax: 702—2023 Physical Therapy is a health profession, concerned with health promotion, prevention of physical disabilities and the rehabilitation of persons disabled by pain, disease or injury. The profession of Physical Therapy utilizes physical therapeutic measures as opposed to medicine, surgery or radiation. of the following subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics or Biology. 1. Be at least 18 years old at the time of admission to the programme. 6. Ability to express self adequately, orally and in writing. 2. Complete, at the time of admission to the programme, sixty (60) volunteer hours in a Physical Therapy department. At least thirty (30) of these hours must be spent in an acute general Hospital. Candidates must make their own arrangements for doing volunteer hours. 7. Firm commitment to the successful study of Physical Therapy. Duration of Training Admission Requirements Applicants for admission to Bachelor of Science, Physical Therapy will be required to satisfy the following matriculation requirements: Holders of Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) Examination, General Certificate of Examination or approved equivalent with passes in FIVE subjects plus TWO Advanced Level (A’ Level) or equivalent. Passes at the CXC examination must be at the General Proficiency Level grades I, II, or since 1998, Grade III. In addition to English Language, and Mathematics, applicants will be required to have a GCE (or equivalent) A’ Level pass in TWO Willingness to accept direction and instruction and assume responsibility for own actions Applicants are further required to: The nature of the profession is to work with people and populations to maintain and restore maximum movement and functional ability throughout the life span. Personal Qualifications Eligibility to Practice Certain characteristics are extremely important in the individual who chooses Physical Therapy as a career. It is important that you consider these also in assessing your suitability for the profession. These characteristics include: Students who are awarded the B.Sc. Physical Therapy degree are required to complete an internship period of (1) year, in an acute or rehabilitation hospital. Upon the successful completion of the internship period, they become eligible for registration with the Council for Professions Supplementary to Medicine, Kingston, Jamaica. 1. 2. 3. 4.
