Directions to the site
If coming from the M1, J22. Take the A511 towards Coalville; continue past Coalville
and take the first turning at the roundabout for the A447 (south). After approx 2.5
miles you will approach Ibstock. Take a right turn towards Normanton le Heath into
Pisca Lane. Follow the lane towards Normanton le Heath and after about 1.5 miles
the Woodland Trust car park should be visible on the right hand side. The site extends
beyond the car park as described on the map overleaf.
If coming from the west/north on the A42. Take the A511 towards Coalville. Just before
the Coalville take the A447 (south) and continue as above.
The nearest refreshments are available at Cattow’s Farm and shop 200 yrds from the
car park on the opposite site of the road. An alternative option for a longer walk would
be to park up at Sence Valley Forest Park on the A447, where there are toilet facilities,
and utilise public rights of way to access the new site.

As
This 186 hectare (460 acre) Diamond Wood is the flagship symbol of the 2012 Jubilee
Woods project which planted over 6 million trees in celebration of Queen Elizabeth’s
Diamond Jubilee. Located in north-west Leicestershire near the village of Normanton le
Heath - it is the largest continuous block of new woodland under single ownership in The
National Forest.
Redburro
w
The landscape is gently undulating with miles of old hedgerows and seven hectares (17
acres) of species-rich ancient woodland, which new planting will buffer and extend. A
shimmering lake, created on the site of a disused opencast mine, is located in the north
east of the site near to the Woodland Trust supporter’s grove. The planting of 300,000
new native trees including oak, field maple, silver birch, beech and hornbeam, began in
November 2012 and will continue to 2014. As it grows, the wood will attract wildlife
such as yellowhammers and marsh tits from neighbouring areas, while the site’s open land
will attract skylarks and starlings, dunnocks and bullfinches; and will provide great hunting
grounds for barn owls. Other habitat improvements will include meadows and areas of
wildflowers throughout the site.

There’s archaeological interest, from remnants of an Iron Age settlement to a section
of the Via Devana, the Roman road between the military stations at Colchester and
Chester, often known by its Saxon name of Gartree Road or Street. The plan for the site
links the excellent network of paths and tracks to the surrounding rights of way to make
the site even more accessible to visitors and link in with other destinations within the
National Forest. And over time we hope to install a variety of artistic features and other
information and interpretation that will highlight the Diamond Jubilee.
