Located in north-west Leicestershire near the village of Normanton le Heath - it is the largest continuous block of new woodland under single ownership in The National Forest. Redburro w The landscape is gently undulating with miles of old hedgerows and seven hectares (17 acres) of species-rich ancient woodland, which new planting will buffer and extend. A shimmering lake, created on the site of a disused opencast mine, is located in the north east of the site near to the Woodland Trust supporter’s grove. The planting of 300,000 new native trees including oak, field maple, silver birch, beech and hornbeam, began in November 2012 and will continue to 2014. As it grows, the wood will attract wildlife such as yellowhammers and marsh tits from neighbouring areas, while the site’s open land will attract skylarks and starlings, dunnocks and bullfinches; and will provide great hunting grounds for barn owls. Other habitat improvements will include meadows and areas of wildflowers throughout the site. The plan for the site links the excellent network of paths and tracks to the surrounding rights of way to make the site even more accessible to visitors and link in with other destinations within the National Forest.
