Fact Sheet Social Leisure Youth Program (SLYP-Out) 2012 Objectives For 2012 the SLYP-Out program has a variety of beneficial objectives that will guide the overall program and its purposes, see below. The SLYP-Out program has also identified outcomes it hopes participants of the program experience or achieve as a result of it. Briefly, outcomes are a benefit or change to an individual after participating in a specific program. They are what participants know, think, or can do, that is different from prior to participating in the program. Program planning and subsequent activities will be chosen with certain outcomes in mind. At this point in general terms the following three areas have been identified to yield specific outcomes (still being finalized) after program participation. - To promote inclusion of youth and young adults with disabilities into the community. - To motivate program participants to explore and become independently involved in various community activities of their choice. - To increase awareness of a healthy lifestyle. Additional Program Objectives: - To provide youth and young adults with disabilities an opportunity to take part in various social, leisure, recreational, cultural and rewarding activities within the community. - To create opportunities to develop new friendships and maintain existing relationships through interaction with peer groups. - To create an environment where participants can experience personal growth in the areas of self confidence, independence, personal skills and awareness. - To provide respite for families and caregivers. - To provide assistance with transportation and access to community activities. - To provide an opportunity for better understanding of individual differences for those without disabilities. - To experience through volunteering, opportunities for individuals to engage with youth and young adults living with a disability. Ages 17 to 22 Note: Participants are eligible to register for any session of which they will be 22 years of age or younger at the start of the session. Once you have turned 23 you are not eligible to participate in future sessions. 1 Sessions The program will be divided into approximately 4 sessions over the course of the year and will be identified chronologically as Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall. Session Dates Winter 2012 – January 24 to March 15 Spring 2012 – April 3 to June 7 (approximate dates) Summer 2012 – July 3 to August 23 (approximate dates) Fall 2012 – September 25 to November 15 (approximate dates) Number of Participants The SLYP-Out program can accommodate up to 25 participants per session. The overall number of participants will be divided into smaller size groups for programming efficiency. Various considerations will be looked at when forming the groups. In the event there are more applicants than available spots a lottery draw will be required to assign the spots. Attempts will be made to insure interested applicants receive a spot in the next session if not drawn for the current session. Activity Times For the Winter and Spring 2012 Sessions, activity nights will be Tuesdays and Thursdays. Most of the activities will occur between 7 and 9 pm approximately, not including transportation time. Each participant will have an activity scheduled every second week during the session. For the Summer Session we hope to offer participants one program activity per week. Registration It will be necessary for all interested participants to complete a SLYP-Out Application in order to be considered for the program. A registration fee will be charged to all applicants in order to offset some of the costs of providing the program. Please contact program personnel if cost is a barrier to participation. The cost for each session will be posted with the announcement of that session. Costs Participants are responsible for costs such as admission fees and snacks when out on programming. Participants will be notified ahead of the activity as to any extra costs they will have in conjunction with the activity. Transportation Transportation for the SLYP-Out program can be provided by the Abilities Council. The Regina Branch has recently acquired an accessible bus that can accommodate both ambulatory and individuals who use a wheel chair or other assistive mobility device. There is no additional charge to participants for accessing the Council bus for the program. ** Contact – Michael Easton for additional program information, 569-9048, measton@abilitiescouncil.sk.ca 2
