We wish to thank all instructors in the Learning in Later Life program for generously volunteering their time
and expertise to present these courses and potpourris to our members.
Classes
Environmental History of America-Part XI & Colonial American History
Instructor: Dr. Dietrich Schlobohm, Professor of History, Emeritus, Springfield College
In the first 2 sessions we will conclude our Environmental History of America. This will involve finishing
the course summary and also examining the recent Climate Stability Agreement reached by world leaders in
Paris in December of 2015. In sessions 3 and 4 we will begin a new course entitled Colonial American
History. We will start with Columbus and the early exploration of the New World. It will consist of a careful
evaluation of this famous explorer and also the impact of the Columbian Exchange.

Talking Politics- Election 2016: Are All Bets Off?
Instructor: Dr. Dan Russell, Professor, Springfield College
For a variety of reasons, the 2016 election cycle looks like it will be one for the history books. It is showing
signs of defying many of the time-honored understandings that people have about the processes and
institutions of American politics. We'll look at explanations for how we have gotten to this place and what it
may mean.

Opera Adventures: Exploring the Operas of Giacomo Puccini
Instructor: Michael Cascia
If you enjoy opera or would like to learn more about this wonderful art form, you will have fun exploring the
operas by Puccini with Mr. Cascia. You will listen to the first 5 of Puccini’s great operatic works,
including 3 of his greatest masterpieces: Manon Lescaut, La Boheme, and Tosca. Mr. Cascia uses a power
point presentation with attached music and shows DVD’s to help illustrate the operas we will be enjoying. In
addition Mr. Cascia will showcase operas being performed at the Metropolitan Opera this season to assist
class members who may like to attend the Met Opera HD broadcasts in local movie theaters or at the
Metropolitan Opera House itself!

Join Jane to view these film classics that feature some of the best known directors of the 1940's and 1950's.

O'Hara who died in 2015 at the age of 95!
2. The Third Man directed by Carol Reed
3. Vertigo directed by Alfred Hitchcock
4. Carousel directed by Henry King

“Around the World with Anush”
Instructor: Anush Dawidjan
Anush has now traveled to 187 of the 193 UN member countries. This spring she will cover her recent
adventure to Papua New Guinea (PNG) where she attended the annual Goroka Sing Sing Festival. She also
stayed in 4 different villages in the highlands and in coastal area of PNG. This has been her most interesting
trip and she has many stories and fastening photos to share.

Preventing an Identity Theft Crisis
Instructor: Jim Naugler, BDO & A.V.P Citizens Bank
Join Jim to discuss the issue of identity theft. How does it occur? How can you prevent it? What steps should
you take if you become a victim. There will be time for questions and concerns to be addressed.

Songs for a Better World
Instructor: Verne McArthur, Retired Professor of Human Services, Springfield College
Verne returns to LLL to offer more songs intended to move us toward our better selves and toward a better
world—and have fun in the process! Through both performance and sing-along, Verne will explore songs
from the past and present--and from different parts of the world, some well-known, some hidden gems; some
serious, some funny but all are inspirational. Come shake off the snow, welcome spring, nurture your hope,
and be inspired!

Alternative Energy Resources and Global Use

Join Springfield College Professors McGowan and Lojewska in a discussion of alternative energy resources
other than fossil fuels. Learn about energy sources and how they are used in the United States and European
countries. LIMIT: 25 Participants

The Poetry of Walt Whitman

Enjoy the life and poetry of Walt Whitman, the poet most of us were bored by in high school or college.Now
that we're of an age to slow down and reflect, we'll hear him again through the voice of Ed Dibble.

2015/16 Supreme Court Term and the 2016 Presidential Election
Instructor: Carl Fetterol, Springfield College
Join us as we examine current cases before the United States Supreme Court (SCOTUS) including;
abortion, contraceptive coverage, affirmative action, organized labor, voting rights and possibly immigration.
These cases, and the justices rulings that follow, will thrust the SCOTUS onto the front page and ensure the
issues are front and center of the presidential campaign.

Current Affairs Discussion Group
Group Discussion
Meet with your peers to discuss current affairs. This is an open discussion so please come prepared to talk
about a variety of topics in the news. Topics can range from the weather, politics, local and national news,
basically anything you’ve read about in the papers or seen on television. This will be an active discussion
group and all participants are encouraged to bring material to discuss and to be open-minded and respectful
of each other. Suzette will start off the first session.

Watercolor Painting
Instructor: Marilyn Tomlinson
Join Marilyn for an introduction to methods and techniques of watercolor painting. Participants will learn
how to create their own painting from a photograph or other picture that will be suitable to frame. No
previous experience is necessary. Results are guaranteed. Basic material will be provided for a $10 fee.
Limit 12 participants.

Perforated Fiber , An Open Book Dialogue
Instructor: Haven Triplett and Maurice Triplett
Please join co-authors and brothers in a discussion of their book, Perforated Fiber. The book is an
autobiographical account of their lives in the ghettos and semi-rural areas of Connecticut and Massachusetts
from the late 1970's into the 1990's. The authors tell their stories from different experiences and
perspectives.. Events in the story are movie-like however; they are literally cut from the headlines. Each
chapter takes readers on an emotional roller coaster through sadness and laughter as they find their own
personal connection to the story. The therapeutic nature of the book helps readers who have faced hardship
realize that there are people who understand their plight. This book is an inspirational life lesson.

Registration and Kick-off Kaffee-Klatsch
The literal meaning of the term is an informal social gathering for coffee and conversation. Enjoy coffee and
danish as you register for spring classes. This is an open house style, stop in during the 2 hours at your
leisure and we will assist with online registration and answer any questions you may have.

Poetry Reading and Performance by Joy Harjo
Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Joy Harjo is an internationally known poet, writer, performer and saxophone
player of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation. A book signing and refreshments will follow the event.

The Springfield College Dancers will perform contemporary, jazz, ballet and tap works. There is a nominal

Enjoy this dance performance by Springfield College dance students, which will showcase works created
during the spring 2016 semester.

Film Screening
Join Sherri VandenAkker, professor at Springfield College Boston, for the screening of her documentary, My
Name Was Bette: The Life and Death of an Alcoholic. The feature-length film offers a shocking yet moving
look at women’s alcoholism. It chronicles the progression of the disease in VandenAkker’s mother,Bette,a
nurse,wife and mother who died under horrific circumstances in 2007. A Q&A session will take place with
VandenAkker following the screening.

Concert
The Zanetti School Children’s Chorus and the Springfield College Community Chorus join the worldrenowned Young@Heart Chorus as they return to Springfield College. Featuring a range of music, this
concert will celebrate the joys of singing for people of all ages. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Seating is first come
first served.

Spring Nature and History Walk
Instructor: Dr. Dietrich Schlobohm, environmental historian and naturalist.
Celebrate the arrival of spring by observing and enjoying the debut of returning birds,
blooming wildflowers, leafing trees, insects and amphibians coming out of hibernation.
Good footwear and comfortable clothing are recommended for this nature walk in
Robinson State Park. The park has a great diversity of trees including the most northern
forest of tulip trees in New England.

Location: Robinson State Park in Agawam, Massachusetts.
Directions: From Springfield cross the Memorial Avenue Bridge. Stay on Memorial Ave
until you cross the Westfield River and come into Agawam. At the light turn right on to
Springfield Street. Take this until you come to Five Corners( just past Sarat Ford on your
left). From the Five Corners intersection take North Street for about one mile. The
entrance to the park is on your right. Our meeting place is at the entrance to the park.
There may be an admission fee if we drive further into the park
Most of our walk will be on level ground. Hiking boots or study footwear is strongly
advised. Bring along water and a lunch. For more information call Dietrich at 788-4125.
Instructor/Member Appreciation Wrap Up Reception
Join us to celebrate the conclusion of our year of learning and fellowship. Loomis Lakeside at Reeds
Landing will host us in a fun afternoon with refreshments and activities. All Instructors and LLL members
are welcome to attend.

1. Registration is completed online at home or at one of our convenient registration sessions.
2. For assistance with registration, complete the membership application. Select your membership
category: Individual or Couple. Choose your classes and bring the forms with you to the registration
session.
3. Members may select as many courses for the one low fee. Please provide all requested information.
4. Upon receipt of your registration and payment, a confirmation email will be sent to you. For course
schedule, campus map, and parking permit, please attend a registration session. We reserve the right
to limit course registrations due to classroom space limitations. We reserve the right to cancel
classes.
5. Please register only for classes you plan to attend. If you sign up for a class or trip with limited
registration, please notify the Office of Conferences and Special Events if you ultimately cannot
attend. There is always a waiting list, and we can give the next person in line an opportunity to attend
if we are notified.
