Heats during power outages CSA certified Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Must be at least 4 sq ft area in total left open for ventilation. Must be 4ft from the top & 8ft around unit from any combustible What is radiant heat? Radiant heaters are available as either natural gas or propane fired and need no electricity to run. Output is around 125,000 BTU per hr. – more than your average house furnace. The heater flame is contained inside a vented metal tube, which is heated until red hot. This style of heater does not heat the air directly, but generates an infrared wave which heats surfaces as it contacts them. This produces an even heat distribution with minimal air circulation. The combustion byproducts are vented directly to atmosphere, and can pose a hazard unless adequate ventilation is provided. Propane also contains a significant amount of water and this moisture will be introduced into the structure when this fuel is used. Natural gas contains very little water and has the added advantage of not needing monitoring for fueling. Hoses can be fitted with male ATCO fittings to quick connect to your construction gas meters. Maintenance & trouble shooting TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS FOR RADIANT HEATERS 1. Won’t light? If you are firing it up for the first time, please be patient while the gas or propane gets all the way to the heater. It can take up to 5 minutes for natural gas to fill the hose due to the low pressure and size of hose. Propane is much quicker but still takes a while to fill a 50 ft. hose assembly for the first time. 2. Heater shut off? Sometimes bumping the heater will shut it off. There is a tip over safety switch so you have to relight it manually. If it appears stubborn check to see that the tip over switch is not bent from being knocked about. 3. No fuel to heater? Check to see if hose is blocked, or has snow in it. Especially if it is a propane hose the opening is small and fills quickly. 4. Also check your regulator – it needs to be set properly in order for fuel to get to the heater. 5. Lastly, check your fuel source. 780.464.4929 www.4-way.com 11 Infrared Fired Heaters VAL6 KBE5L MANUFACTURED BY: VAL6 Direct fired heater Fuel source: Diesel The KBE5L model has a large 15 gallon tank for longer operation and better efficiency. In some cases simply maintaining a tight schedule makes these the right heaters to use for thawing and curing applications. Setup of Ground Heaters is simple and the flexibility of the hose allows for many different configurations. Past applications even include the use of pex tubing in a slab or grade beam application to provide heat prior to, during and after your pour. With hot air heating, most of your heat is going into the atmosphere instead of into the ground. You also have to contend with noisy heaters, fumes, expensive enclosures, fluctuating fuel costs, and constant supervision. Wouldn’t it be nice not to have to hoard an enclosure and baby-sit a propane heater at all hours during the night? Ground Heaters require no hoarding, little supervision, at about a 1/3 of the cost of traditional hot air heating. Call us to get more information or visit our website at www.4-way.com. Pressurized gas or liquid, natural gas, potable water and underground drainage pipes are made of different materials. Note that local laws may require that only licensed contractors work on gas lines. Before undertaking any piping project, check local building codes and take proper safety precautions. Pipe threads must make not only a mechanical join, but also a leak proof hydraulic seal. This is accomplished by the tapered thread of the male matching the tapered form of the female thread and the use of pipe sealant to fill any voids between the two threads that could cause a spiral leak. When joining NPT tapered pipe to make a leak proof seal, professionals recommend using a sealer such as pipe thread tape, more commonly known as Teflon. This tape should be wound tightly around the male threads running in the same direction as the lead thread so that the turning motion of the pipe follows the tape winding direction. Manufacturers recommend a specific torque value be applied to achieve a proper seal, but with NPT fittings a simple rule of thumb is hand tight, then one to two turns with a wrench. The size of a pipe is determined with an I.D. measurement due to the varying thicknesses of pipe walls. In this picture both fittings are 3/4" although the wall thickness is obviously very different. JIC threads seal on a 37 degree bevel on the mating face of the fitting. Both the male and female have a flare that is pressed together by the thread on the fitting. The seat must be clean and undamaged in order for a proper seal to occur, it should be noted that the use of thread tape or pipe sealants on this type of fitting will interfere with proper seating taking place and may result in a leak occurring. Fuel gas regulators are used to reduce pressure down to levels suitable for heaters. There are many different types, but here we will focus on only what is commonly used in our industry. The 64 and 67c series regulators are usually painted red and reduce gas pressures from 100 psi (what is normally found in a propane tank) down to 3 to 10 psi. This unit can also be used as a first stage regulator, in series with another type of unit for finer adjustment. The second stage regulator is usually green in color. This regulator is normally set at 11 inches water column or between 6 and 8 oz of pressure. Another type of regulator is gray in color and is a two-stage regulator; the second stage still provides 11 inches of water column at output, but with a higher rate of flow. See the chart for more details. 780.464.4929 Another method of joining fittings or hose together is with a JIC or SAE fitting. Natural gas and some propane fittings use this method. In this picture you can see that a bevel is present on this type of fitting. Propane fuel is widely used to provide winter heat in our industry and there are a few facts that you should know about using this fuel. Propane is a liquid inside the cylinder or tank in which it comes. Heaters burn vapor, not liquid gas. Therefore, the gas has to turn from liquid to vapor to be used in a heater. In a typical 100 pound tank the maximum withdrawal rate of propane at 5 deg Celsius is around 214,900 Btu per hour, however at –30 deg Celsius only 107,100 Btu per hour is available or around half. The layer of frost around a tank will further act as an insulator and degrade performance even more. This can be overcome with the use of a vaporizer to increase available vapor flow. Fuel management When heating for extended periods fueling can become a troublesome issue. If natural gas is not available then propane, diesel or electricity are the remaining choices commonly available. When using propane, try to set up a regular filling schedule with your supplier. If diesel is your choice of fuel, 4-Way has various options available, including our Transcubes. These storage tanks are double walled, Department of Transportation (DOT) approved, come standard with lifting lugs and fork pockets, and will not spill if tipped over. Transcubes can be utilized as a trailer mounted mobile filling station with an electric pump, or connected directly to heaters to ensure a long term uninterrupted fuel supply to our diesel units. And for security, these tanks can be locked to prevent theft or vandalism. 2000L Transcube with trailer & pump 780.464.4929 www.4-way.com 21 Sizes available from 2-240kW Generators 7-13kW Diesel Generators MANUFACTURED BY: MULTIQUIP, WACKER NEUSON Compact Portable Generators Our compact and portable single-phase Generators come fully equipped with just about every control and convenience feature imaginable. Both models of the Arctic Bear recirculate air by drawing warmer in-take air from inside the building rather than the cold outside air. They do this by running flexible duct work from the building to the air in-take of the machine. With in-take air starting at a higher temperature, the cost to raise the air temperature is reduced as much as 50%, so you can save up to 30% in fuel savings. Most job sites are loose - no windows, caulking, insulation etc. Therefore cold air can infiltrate the building because outside air is usually at a higher pressure then inside air. High pressure air will always flow to areas of lower pressure. When this cold air comes into the building, it causes uneven temperatures and slows down interior work. The Arctic Bear is moisture free compared to direct fired heaters. So, the Arctic Bear allows you to re-circulate inside air but still have a percentage of outside air (which is pressurized) to be blown into the building. By using this feature, customers can still enjoy some fuel savings while pressurizing the building (keeping cold air from entering the building) to maintain nice even temperatures. www.4-way.com UR O T REN D E T A OR F R E P S!
