Program Objectives
Job Opportunities
Instrumentation technology training at San
Jacinto College falls into three categories:
control systems installation, maintenance, and
troubleshooting. Our program is designed so that
a student can achieve fundamental success in all
three of these areas. Additionally, we teach basic
electrical theory and controls so that our students
can successfully perform entry-level instrument
and electrical (IE) technician duties.
The primary focus of our program is to provide
industry with high-quality, trainable, entry-level
technicians. Our graduates will find employment
in the following industries:
Highly trained instrument technicians, also known
as control systems technologists, are responsible
for installing, calibrating, and troubleshooting
individual process instruments, as well as
complete control systems. They are expected to
understand the workings of a process, as well as
the complexity of the control system.
Computer control in the processing industry
provides a platform for more sophisticated control
strategies, and requires connecting intelligent
devices together through various networking
systems and protocols. Therefore, today’s control
systems technologist must be able to navigate
among various intelligent devices and implement
sophisticated control strategies if they are to be
successful in troubleshooting control system
problems. Our program addresses these issues
in one of the most comprehensive industrial
computer control labs in the country.
