For instance, the electricity tariff went up by 26.3%, costing the Club a staggering RM75,000 monthly, on average. We are, therefore, appealing to all members to help us in a collective effort to save energy and water to reduce bills. The 2009 budget shows a quarter million ringgit deficit mainly due to (a) reduction in monthly subscriptions because members aged 70 and above are exempt and (b) a shortfall in food and beverage revenue. Whilst there is not much we can do about ageing, we can, however, do something about (b) i.e. members to increase patronage at all our F&B and service outlets to raise income and, in turn, help balance our budget. To remedy the situation, the Committee considered presenting two motions at the EGM of 28th December 2008, namely, an increase in monthly subscription and minimum spending. However, after due consideration, the Committee elected to withdraw the respective motions and put them on hold. The Committee is also concerned about rules violation by members, spouses and children, especially in respect to our dress code when they are at the Golfers’ Terrace. To help matters, we are placing signage at strategic locations and we hope all members will abide by the rules. Currently, the Club is constructing a dam and three irrigation ponds on Hole No. 5 of the Putra Course. The project will take three months to complete at a cost of RM554,070.00 against a budget of RM700,000 approved earlier last year. While construction is in progress, Hole No. 5 will be shortened to 140m from the blue marker and be converted to Par 3. In the clubhouse complex, the Committee approved the makeover and re-flooring of the Bilik Buaya and provide an annexed area for private dining with a capacity of 40 pax. When you dine on certain days of the week, you will be accompanied by the Club’s resident band. In ending my message, I would take this opportunity, on behalf of the President and Vice President and Management Committee members, in wishing all KGNS members a belated Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year and Gong Xi Fa Cai! Majid (Recreation) Management Committee 2008/2009 Club Updates Extraordinary General Meeting On Sunday, 28 December 2008, 125 members attended the EGM held for the purpose of considering the following business: 1. To discuss and if appropriate, to approve the 2009 budget. 2. To consider and if thought fit, to pass with or without modifications, the following Ordinary Resolutions: ORDINARY RESOLUTION NO. 1 Proposed Minimum Spending by Members: “That approval be and is hereby given to the Club to impose a regulation on the minimum spending of RM100.00 per month on all members (except Absent Members) of the Club AND THAT if members spend less than RM100.00 (for food and beverages only), a minimum RM20.00 will be imposed.” ORDINARY RESOLUTION NO. 2 Proposed Increase in Monthly Subscription: “That in the event the Ordinary Resolution No. 1 is not approved by the members, approval be and is hereby given to the Club to increase the monthly subscription from RM100.00 to RM120.00 effective from 1 January 2009.” Whilst the members approved the proposed budget 2009, the Management Committee, after consideration, withdrew item 2. The reason for the withdrawal is the positive response received from transferable membership. The Management Committee will assess the financial position in the next six months with revenue derived from transferable membership. Other comments raised at the meeting included the need for improvement in the quality of food, to generate income by marketing the Club’s function and seminar facilities and the introduction of non-golfing membership. Berita Subang 9 Love Thy Course Kelana Course Sultan’s Nine Hole No. 10 318 metres (par-4) Blue White Red Index : : : : 318 metres 298 metres 269 metres 14 This hole is reckoned to be one of the most sporting at the Kelana course, as being the shortest undulating hole on the second nine and a fairly easy par four. In order to achieve a par or a birdie, your drive must go down left center, steering clear from the long fairway bunker. There is trouble all the way down both sides as they come in cluster of trees and thick rough. Your ideal approach shot is to go just a little left of the mound while avoiding a yawning green site bunker on the right. If you cannot get down in two, try not to play with a down hill putt. Also, depending on the pin position, this pretty long green can cause disaster as any downhill putt might result in a bogey or more. Rules of golf You Must Putt Out Your Second Ball In a competition of stroke play only, when during a play of a hole if you are doubtful of your rights or procedure, you may, without penalty play a second ball. After that, you should, before taking further action, announce to your marker or fellow competitor of your decision to invoke this Rule (3-3a) and the ball with which you score if the Rules permit. However, you must putt out both balls and report the facts to the Committee before returning your score card unless your scores are the same with both balls. If you fail to putt out your second ball, the penalty is disqualification. Note: A second ball played under Rule 3-3 is not a provisional ball. 10 Berita Subang Golf Updates NOT I CE Use of BUGGIES at Kelana Effective 1st January 2009, the Kelana Course will be classified as a WALKING COURSE. However, members and guests who are 70 years and above of age, and those who are certified as medically unfit to play golf without the use of buggies, may apply to be exempted from this restriction. The use of Buggies is subject to weather and ground conditions at the time of play. Please avoid wet and soggy areas. Please be informed that BHI/MGA Golfer’s Insurance Cards 2009 is ready for your collection. Please collect your card from the Admin office during office hours. Berita Subang 13 Social Cg 2008 KGNS harity ala I t was time again for caring and sharing when Kelab Golf Negara Subang held its ANNUAL CHARITY GALA on Sunday, 2nd November 2008 at the Multi Purpose Hall. Approximately 100 children, invitees from the Stepping Stones Living Centre and Persatuan Penyayang Nur Iman, were treated to a sumptuous lunch and fun-filled day, complete with gifts and souvenirs. Making a star appearance was Coco the Magical Clown who delighted the children with his fun magical tricks which had them all in stitches! Besides goodie bags and balloons which were handed out to all the children in attendance, hampers were also given to each home. In true spirit of charity, KGNS presented cheques amounting to RM 5,000.00 to the Stepping Stones Living Center, RM 5,000.00 to Persatuan Panyayang Nur Iman, and RM 1,000.00 each to Persatuan Pesakit Parah Malaysia and Yayasan Jantung Malaysia. The Social Sub-Committee takes this opportunity to record its heartfelt thanks to all for their generous contributions to the Gala. Members’ Night “DEEPARAYA” On Members’ Night, Friday 30 October 2008, “Deeparaya” was the featured event held at the Bilik Buaya. As it was a joint celebration of Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Deepavali, members were greeted with a Lemang Pit and a multi-coloured Kolum on arrival at the entrance of the outlet. In keeping with the festivities, authentic Indian and Malay light meals were served, much to the delight of the members. Also, as the date of the two-in-one event also fell on Halloween, members were pleasantly surprised by a “monster attack” from two executives of KGNS sporting Halloween masks and scaring Bilik Buaya patrons while they were at it!. Our thanks to Charles Barnabas and Mary Jackson, who were in attendance to entertain the crowd and keep the festive spirit going all night.. 14 Berita Subang Mask-making for Creative KGNS Kids There is an art to mask making with loads of fun, as some creative KGNS kids discovered on 22nd and 29th November 2008. Held at the Poolside Terrace, the event, organised by the Social Sub-Committee for children ages 7 – 9 years, was divided into two segments. The first part of the activity was the creation of the “mould” for the mask, on 22nd November. Whilst it was a tedious task for the children to repeatedly paste paper on empty bowls in shaping the masks, the work was fun-filled as they began to playfully tease one another and making new friends. By the end of the day, the children were already having a small ‘kanji fight’, stormed with laughter and a fair amount of sticky paste in the air! A week later, on 29th November 2008, it was time to colour the creations they had made with paints and unbridled imagination. With the guiding assistance of the instructor, the children went to town in bringing their masks to life! Adding to the fun occasion, the kids were served light refreshments with ice-cream included! The Social Sub-Committee will be holding more activities for the children of KGNS members in the near future with a view to cultivate closeness among everyone. Berita Subang 15 Social New Year’s Eve D D inner & Another year has gone and the new one 2009 was heralded in the traditional KGNS way with a Dinner and Dance to usher it in. Surprise goody bags with party packs greeted our members and guests as they arrived to take their seats. All told, an assembly of 234 members and guests partied through the night with the six-piece band - “Pieces of April”. 16 Berita Subang ance The food was fabulous, a sit-down 5-course western dinner catered from San Francisco Steak House! In addition, two complimentary premium wines or sparkling juice, as alternative, were provided for each table to the delight of those who attended the event. There were also, almost 100 lucky draw prizes being won that night. For Mr. Koh Boon Hong (K201), the new year 2009 was especially fortuitous as he waltzed away with the Grand Lucky Draw prize of 3 days 2 night holiday package to Bali! Louis the Maestro, our emcee for the night, got everyone on their feet, looking under their chairs for stickers to win special prizes for lucky patrons with tagged seats! Besides “Pieces of April”, the crowd were also entertained with some dance performances by the “Bizbody”. At the stroke of midnight, everyone was on the dance floor, happy and cheering, as the merry-makers joined in the chorus for the countdown to the incoming 2009! The Social Sub-Committee would like to thank our sponsors, Forest’s Secret, Unilever, UMW, Sunberry, Ricoh, GP Products Sdn Bhd, WR Hair Studio and Evanna Low, who contributed generously towards making our KGNS New Year’s Eve Dinner & Dance a successful and memorable one. Be extra vigilant and firm with regards to every undertaking. Especially be more discerning when making friends. Evil star surfaces to cause you great loss of wealth, and bloodshed. You are at the pit of your luck. Fortunately, there is a lucky star present to help you to resolve some of the troubles. Regardless of the problems, this will be a relatively better year than the previous. Gradually develop your fundamentals to progress further at a good pace, and all will be well. Do not spend too much and save more. Have tolerance, and control your emotional charges and you will have the opportunity to meet your dream love. Today, the father of 3 sons is a jack of all trades, equally adept at driving a tractor as he is at shearing and pruning when delegated landscaping chores! The training and experience acquired has been largely in-house, having served under 4 Course Superintendents, thus far, in all his time at KGNS. He admits, though, that now, with mechanisation, tasks undertaken are relatively easier, and faster, compared to the early days when “almost everything was done by hand!” A typical day begins at 6.30 a.m. when, at muster, he is assigned his work schedule by the mandore; principally, it is the fairways during weekdays and greens on weekends and eve of competitions. Perianan is particularly proud that, barring the ravages of weather, he and his colleagues in the Course & Grounds Department are able to continually keep playability at both the Putra and Kelana at excellent, if not pristine, conditions all year round. As he puts it, “Subang is the place for golf and I am happy to see so many members on the course, some I have known for many years; we greet and say “hello” when we see each other.” Whilst the years have been kind to Perianan during his tenure at KGNS, he recoils in memory of the morning after the freak storm not so long ago that wreaked havoc at KGNS. “All of us could not believe what we saw and we had to close the course for 2 days and work until the night with Colonel 26 Berita Subang Chua in charge to clear the uprooted trees and repair the damage to fairways and greens. I will never forget that experience, worst than the other two storms that happened before”, Perianan recalls. The annual staff get-togethers organised by KGNS are events he always look forward to, although he has had to stay off golf by reason of “swing injury”! With 2 older sons gainfully employed and the third having just completed his SPM, Perianan is thankful to the Almighty for his family and the good health he enjoys. Except for a short break on retirement, which is looming in the not-too-distant future, he looks forward to continuance of service to KGNS, should the opportunity arise! As to why he has elected to spend all these years at KGNS, he responded, “I like working here and also the people I work with, my supervisor and the Course Superintendent. Also, members here are OK.” ASIA TURFQUIP SUPPLIES (M) SDN BHD is a leading distributor for golf course maintenance equipment, genuine spare parts supplies, golf course accessories. lake & pond aerators and fertilizers & chemicals namely: SHIBAURA WALK BEHIND ALLEN HOVER MOWER SHIBAURA ROUGH MOWER BOFFALO TURBINE BLOWER OTTERBINE AERATORS ‘SUNBURST’ SHIBAURA TRACTOR TRU TURF ROLLER OTTERBINE AERATORS ‘GENESIS’ SHIBAURA FAIRWAY MOWER MAXIM EDGER MARUYAMA BLOWER OTTERBINE AERATORS ‘TRI-STAR’ For enquires KL Head Office : No 13, Jalan SP 4/3, Taman Subang Perdana, 40150 Shah Alam, Selangor.
