Personal Precautions to Avoid Mosquito Bites

advertisement
Personal Precautions to Avoid Mosquito Bites ƒ Avoid being outdoors when mosquitoes are most active, especially between dusk and dawn. Use prevention methods whenever mosquitoes are present. ƒ When outdoors, wear shoes and socks, long pants and a long‐sleeved shirt, and apply insect repellent that includes DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus according to label instructions. Consult a physician before using repellents on infants. ƒ Make sure doors and windows have tight‐fitting screens. Repair or replace screens that have tears or other openings. Try to keep doors and windows shut, especially at night. ƒ Change water in birdbaths weekly. Properly maintain wading pools and stock ornamental ponds with fish. Cover rain barrels with 16‐mesh wire screen. In communities where there are organized mosquito control programs, contact your municipality to report areas of stagnant water in roadside ditches, flooded yards and similar locations that may produce mosquitoes. ƒ For more information on insect repellents, please scroll below. Other factors affecting

~20%-50% DEET
Generally, repellent with 20 – 50% DEET is recommended to protect against tick bites.
In areas where both
mosquitoes and ticks are a
concern, repellents with
20 – 50% DEET may offer best,
well-rounded protection.
The American Academy of Pediatrics
has recommended that repellents
containing up to 30% DEET can be
used on children over 2 months of age.
The repellents shown here meet CDC’s
standard of having EPA registration and
strong performance in peer-reviewed,
scientific studies. They reflect products
currently available in the U.S.

According to a survey commissioned by the Harvard
University School of Public Health, 40 percent of adults
in the United States said that they did not take any
precautions against mosquito bites last summer, even
while West Nile virus continues to spread.
Wearing repellents is critical because it is your last line of
defense against mosquito bites. The key to controlling
diseases like West Nile virus is to reduce human/vector
contact. So it’s important to apply repellents every time
you’re outdoors. Unprotected skin is likely to be bitten if
not covered by a repellent, so thorough and proper
application is a must. In fact, many people aren’t aware that
they should rub the repellent over their skin after spraying
to ensure even coverage.
The most important criteria when choosing a repellent is to
select one you’re going to use. Make sure it’s a repellent
recommended as being effective by the Centers for Disease
Control. Also look at the percentage of active ingredient —
that will tell you how many hours of protection
the repellent will provide.
By picking and using the right repellent,
you can spend your time enjoying the
outdoors knowing you’re protected.
