The research has involved high T and P hydrothermal experiments and mineral synthesis, use of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy to study trace/minor element incorporation in minerals, and the application of surface-sensitive spectroscopic methods to chemical weathering, valence determinations, and heterogeneous electron transfer reactions. Dr. Ilton’s current research is focused on redox reactions between structural/sorbed FeII and radionuclides, the development of theoretical models of XP spectra for transition metals and actinides, and the interaction of variably hydrated supercritical CO2 with rocks and minerals with implications for geologic CO2 sequestration.
