Five Lamps is one of the largest community-led social and economic regeneration businesses in the North East. Based in Thornaby, Stockton-on-Tees, they aim to transform the lives of individuals and their families by helping them to find work, start their own business, improve their finances. They also work to improve the aspirations of young people. Initially, Five Lamps began its Investors in People journey to support the organisation’s investment in quality assurance and continuous quality improvement. Since then the framework has supported the organisation to engage with their employees, increasing motivation and commitment. Following a re-focus in 2004, Investors in People was also approached to ensure that Five Lamp’s new mission, vision and values were being embraced across the organisation. the organisation moving forward and that the activities underpinning them were aligned with individual and team objectives – allowing employees to see how their work contributed to the organisation’s success. How has IIP helped? Describing their Investors in People journey so far as ‘stretching, rewarding and motivating’, working with the framework and going on to achieve Gold status has helped Five Lamps to demonstrate to their employees that they matter – which in turn aligns to one of their core values of ‘making people matter’. The framework has also supported the voluntary sector organisation to navigate an increasingly challenging environment. “We have noticed a shift in employee attitudes over the last few years and the team is now much more customerfocused and understands how our overall performance and individual, team and organisational objectives are all linked. Employees being given the lead on projects to help develop leadership and management skills across the organisation. The introduction of a core competency framework, linked to the values of the organisation. The establishment of forums for implementing employee ideas and suggestions for continuous improvement activities. Taken forward through a Quality Working Group, team meetings and other groups, suggestions so far have included ideas to reduce inefficiencies and improve customer service. “With support from the framework, our senior management team also recognise the need to become more performance driven as we face these challenges. “Investors in People has helped us to establish a new set of key performance indictors to improve performance management across the organisation and helps us to quickly identify any areas of concern. Supportive leadership values as demonstrated by the Chief Executive – the impact of which has been confirmed through positive internal and external staff consultations. “We would recommend Investors in People to other organisations without hesitation as the framework can improve the overall feeling of employee engagement and a sense of belonging to an organisation. The development of recognition and reward initiatives such as social activities and trips, resulting in improved engagement and motivation.
