been specifically designed by Draka engineering
specialists to eliminate or significantly mitigate
the failure mechanisms common to the hose

extensive global cable manufacturing
experience and technical expertise of the
Prysmian Group in successfully designing cables
for such rigorous flexing applications as
elevators, robotics, mining, and crane
applications, these loops are designed to have a
life expectancy of multiple times that of hose

of conventional hose style loops.
The Draka BostDrive™ designs take a completely different
approach, which is to treat the loop as a complete
composite cable, not a number of cables pulled into a
hose. By doing so, the stresses on the individual
components can be predicted and controlled by the
proper use of cable design and assembly techniques for
continuous flexing applications. Cabling lay lengths and
directions of lay of components are adjusted to minimize
torque and rotation, which could cause corkscrewing.
Each component (power conductor, instrumentation pair,
control conductor, etc.) is specifically designed for
continuous flexing, and the resulting assembly of these
components takes into consideration the location of each
component within the cable to insure that the imposed
stresses during long term operation will be within design
guidelines for long life. Each BostDrive™ cable is
specifically designed for the particular drive to be
employed by the user, as well as the environment it will
encounter.

groups of conductors, pairs, etc., in accordance with
the requirements of the drive. Each component (power conductor, instrumentation pair, control conductor, etc.)
is specifically designed for longer life under continuous flexing conditions.
Hose style loops, constructed in the conventional
manner, consist of a high quality industrial hose
with standard cable components configured to the
top drive requirements. The loops are potted at each
end to prevent ingress of moisture and chemicals.
Components can be connectorized to customer
requirements to facilitate ease of installation.
All loops are fully tested prior to shipment.
Hose Style Bostdrive™ Loops (Better)
Hose style BostDrive™ loops consist of a high quality
industrial hose with BostDrive™ components in lieu of
standard use cables that are typically provided in the
conventional hose style loops. These components are
specifically designed for extended life when subjected to
the high level of continuous flexing seen during drilling
operations. Torque balance constructions resist twisting,
pigtailing or corkscrewing. The components exiting the
breakout assembly will be individually armored, and will
be sheathed with an ester based mud resistant (MR)
jacket, as required for Zone 1 hazardous locations.
of a double MR (Mud Resistant) jacket with an aramid fiber braid between the layers to provide tensile
strength, as well as superior resistance to cut through and abrasion. The aramid fiber braided strength

member is torque balanced and provides twist
resistance to minimize any rotation. This jacket is also highly resistant to oils, solvents, moisture, sunlight, and drilling fluids, including ester based muds.
BostDrive™ cable loops provide the ultimate solution for
longer life and higher reliability in service loop applications.
These BostDrive™ designs take a completely different

cable loops are designed and manufactured as complete

The cables are constructed in such a manner as to minimize
torque and rotation, which causes corkscrewing.

Instrumentation pairs will employ individual shields consisting of copper braid in lieu of the standard shields which consist of an overlapped aluminum/polyester backed tape plus a drain wire. The higher conductivity
of the braid provides superior shielding, and is not vulnerable to the deterioration under continuous flexing, which is common to the tape shielded designs.
The mechanical hangoff system is designed to be compatible with current hangoff systems used by top drive manufacturers.

power conductors is based on “free air” ratings, while proper engineering guidelines require that, if the cables are installed in a hose or conduit, a derating factor of
approximately 0.8 should be applied to the “free air” ampacities. This is due to the effect of the air inside the hose or conduit acting as a thermal insulation, and reducing the rate of heat conduction away from the
hot conductors. As a consequence, for a given ampacity,
BostDrive conductors will run cooler than those
installed in a hose, or, at an equivalent temperature, will allow for higher ampacity.
