Electronic Toy Recycling Program Launched in British Columbia
New province-wide program provides environmentally responsible recycling option for more than two
million electronic toys sent to landfills every year
Vancouver, B.C. – As of July 1st, 2012, British Columbians can recycle their used or broken electronic
toys at over 50 convenient drop-off locations through a new and unique program for Electronic Toy
Recycling.
The Electronic Toy Recycling program will target the eventual diversion of approximately two million
electronic toys previously destined for the landfill, helping to reduce pollution, save energy, and protect
the environment.
Introduced by the Canadian Brandowners Residual Stewardship Organization (CBRSC), Electronic Toy
Recycling is the first electronic toy recycling program of its kind in Canada and the only governmentapproved electronic toy recycling program in B.C. The program will accept electronic toys for recycling,
ranging from small electronic toy giveaways to large ride-on electrically powered toys.
“This is a welcome addition to B.C.’s industry-managed and funded recycling programs,” says Brock
Macdonald, CEO, Recycling Council of British Columbia. “By diverting electronic toys from municipal
waste streams, Electronic Toy Recycling will recover valuable resources, promote conservation and
reduce waste management costs for local governments throughout the province.”

membership is committed to collecting and recycling these products responsibly and effectively,” says
Lyndall Fry, President of the CBRSC. “We know British Columbians are ready for a program like the
Electronic Toy Recycling program. British Columbians actively participate in multiple programs across
the Province and we are confident that BC residents will actively support the program.”
After an electronic toy is brought to a drop-off location, it will be transported to Genesis Recycling, a
local processor in Langley, BC and separated into different materials which are then recycled. Metals will
be smelted down and recycled into other metal products, while plastics will be sorted and sold or reused
in various manufacturing processes. All batteries will be recycled with a cooperate agreement between
Electronic Toy program and the Call2Recycle battery recycling program. All electronics will be managed
by rigorous R2/e-Stewards certified standards.
The CBRSC has partnered with Waste Management of Canada to set up and operate the Electronic Toy
program throughout the province.
Developed by the Canadian Brandowners Residual Stewardship Corporation (CBRSC), this program
joins 12 other successful industry-managed recycling programs operating in B.C. for everything from
beverage containers, tires and electronics, to batteries, oil, gasoline and other flammables.
The program accepts thousands of electronic toys designed for children, ranging in size from small
consumer electronic toy giveaways to large ride-on battery powered toys. Examples of Accepted
Electronic Toys are:
Plush Textile toys with electronics powered by batteries or plugs
Hard Plastics toys with electronics powered by batteries or plugs
Remote control vehicles with electronics powered by batteries or plugs
Ride On vehicles’ with electronics powered by batteries or plugs
*Hand Held game devises with electronics powered by batteries or plugs
*Gaming devises with PC /TV with electronics powered by batteries or plugs
* Advanced gaming devices, both handhelds and consoles that that are designed to be used with
televisions and computers, will be managed by the Electronic Products Recycling Association (EPRA

Recycling program is primarily designed to manage electronic toys designed for children 14 years old
or younger, we will work closely with EPRA BC to ensure British Columbians are able to recycle all
regulated electronic toys and gaming devices..
As a non-profit recycling program, the CBRSC will be fully funded by the members of the organization for
products brought into B.C. by electronic toy manufacturers and retailers.
