THE CHURCH VOICE Vol. 27 April 2016 Number 4 from me to you………… Dear friends in Christ, A lot happened at our Church last Month! In addition to the Choir’s wonderful Maundy Thursday Worship Service and our Easter celebration, we also hosted a Presbytery meeting and another great Connections Pot-Luck Supper. But for me, one of the best things that happened at our Church last month was the workshop we hosted on the Monday in Holy Week entitled, “Understanding Alzheimer’s and Dementia.” This was the third time in the last 15 years that I have heard the speaker, Melanie Bunn, RN. It was good to see some of our church members at the workshop and I believe they will join me in giving a testimonial about the importance of caring for the caregivers when a loved one is suffering from dementia. Please let me know if you would like to see some of the handouts from the workshop. We rejoice with Blake Durham and Michael Kolcun, our newest members who worked with me during Lent in this year’s Confirmation Class. These two young adults are blessed to not only have parents active in our church but also grandparents. I remember going with my Grandmother to the Quaker Church she grew up in as part of a homework assignment in a college course on Comparative Religions. I hope our new members will treasure their faithful grandparents as much as I did. Enjoy this first full month of Spring. And please join us in worship as we spend some time learning from John’s Gospel. What are you doing next Sunday? I agreed that she had mostly resolved the difficult concern that prompted her to begin meetings. I also shared with her that the deeper object of counseling is not simply about solving problems. It is about broadening one’s selfunderstanding. Can we ever reach the end of discovering everything about ourselves? Daily life overflows with countless distractions. Strong emotions snare us. We easily overlook how God creates us and delights in us. But we don’t need to lose our way. In wonder and thanks we may focus on what God is doing within us. We may embrace our uniqueness with deepening curiosity. “Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous – how well I know it.” (Psalm 139:14) Anyone will benefit from the self-exploration counseling offers!
