Visit our website at canbyutility.org February/March 2015 Issue 1 Thank You, Todd Wagner Stay Clear of Danger! A downed power line may not be a dead line. It could cause serious injury or death. Assume all power lines are energized and dangerous. Lines that are de-energized could become energized at any time. Never touch a downed power line—and never touch a person or object that is touching a power line. Follow these tips to stay safe around a downed power line: »» Immediately report a downed power line to Canby Utility and call 911. »» If you see someone who has been shocked and is in direct or indirect contact with a downed power line, do not touch the person. Efforts to pull an electric shock victim away could make you a second victim. Warn others to stay away. We wish to express our appreciation to Todd Wagner for his service on the Canby Utility Board of Directors. Todd joined the board in August 2009 and served for nearly six years until his second term expired on February 28. Thank you, Todd, for your commitment and service to Canby and contributing your valuable perspective to Canby Utility. »» If a power line falls across or near your vehicle while you are in it, stay inside until help arrives. If you must exit, jump clear so no part of your body is touching the car when you land. Keep both feet together and shuffle or hop until you are at least 30 feet away from the vehicle. »» Do not attempt to move tree limbs that are on or near a power line. 503.266.1156 www.canbyutility.org Pay online at canbyutility.org using your account number and phone number to log in. TowN Around CANBY LOCAL EVENTS The National Fire Protection Association and the Consumer Product Safety Commission say any widely used heating device can be used safely, if the following precautions are followed: »» Buy a space heater that has been tested and labeled by a nationally recognized testing laboratory, such as Underwriters’ Laboratory. »» Shop for a heater with an automatic safety switch that will turn it off should the heater tip over; an overheat sensor that shuts off the heater if it gets too hot; a low surface temperature to protect people and pets from burns; and a screen or grill around the heating coil, with small openings to keep children’s fingers from touching the heating element. »» Keep the heater at least 3 feet away from flammable objects. Be sure to keep towels or other items clear to prevent fires. »» Cords need to be unobstructed. Placing anything on top of the cord, such as rugs, could cause it to overheat and cause a fire. »» Extension cords are not recommended and should be used only when absolutely necessary. It is dangerous to use light-duty household extension cords with a heater because it could start a fire. »» Using the heater to dry clothes, gloves or shoes is not recommended. »» Unless specifically certified for that purpose, do not use heaters in wet or moist places, such as bathrooms. Corrosion to heater parts may lead to a fire or a shock hazard. »» Make sure the cord is not worn and avoid using electrical tape over a break. Have the cord replaced by a professional. Use HPN-designated cord. It is the only one acceptable for electric space heaters. »» Be sure the plug fits snugly in the outlet. A loose plug can overheat. ? Did You Know According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 25,000 residential fires each year are associated with the use of space heaters. As many as 300 people a year die in these fires. Another 6,000 people visit hospital emergency rooms for burns that are the result of touching hot surfaces on space heaters.
