2014 National Physician Survey (NPS): NATIONAL DEMOGRAPHICS
Source of Data:
The 2014 National Physician Survey (NPS) was carried out as a self-reported survey, available to all licensed physicians in Canada. The email contact list was generated from the NPS Masterfile. The NPS Masterfile was populated with
information from the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) membership system (general practitioners), the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) membership database (CFPC certified family medicine specialists), and the Royal
College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (Royal College) membership database (Royal College certified specialists).Those for whom an email address was unavailable could access the survey by going to the NPS website and using the
Link Finder to obtain their personalized link to the survey instrument. All licensed physicians in full or part-time practice, locums, employed in a medically related field, or on leave were eligible to respond to the survey. Medical students, residents,
and retired physicians were not eligible.
A separate database pertaining to all eligible survey respondents was developed in order to assess the comparability and representativeness of the survey respondents to the total physician population, and to develop statistical weights to be
applied to each strata and age grouping within the 2014 survey results. From the NPS Masterfile, physician age, sex, province, language, and year of MD graduation were captured along with an indication of whether or not the individual
completed the questionnaire. No names or addresses were contained in this separate database.
