WORK PROCEDURES:

SPOT CLEANING / CARPET PREPARATION

Spot cleaning before the carpet is cleaned allows the dirt to emulsify, making it easier to completely remove it during the cleaning process.

REMOVING SPILLS, SPOTS AND STAINS

The sooner a spill or spot is removed from the carpet, the less chance it has of becoming a permanent stain

Use a spotting kit, spotting machines or a combination of the two

Identify the spill, spot or stain

Blotting is still the single best technique for removing a liquid spill that is still wet

Weight or pressure is applied to maintain solid contact between the towels and the surface of the carpet

Do this first on any wet spills before trying any chemicals, including water

Removing Fresh Spills:

Start cleanup the moment the spill is reported

Blot spill before it has a chance to set, and do not rub or scrub

Use all-purpose cleaner

Do not use ammonia or bleach -- they can make the problem worse

Blot excess all-purpose cleaner with clean towel, dry spot with a fan or place a heavy object on clean dry towel for a few hours, occasionally turning the towel to a dry clean spot

WORK PROCEDURES:

SPOT CLEANING / CARPET PREPARATION

REMOVING SPILLS, SPOTS AND STAINS

Removing Old Spills or Spots :

Remove solids by gently scraping with putty knife or scraping tool

Apply spotting chemical to dampen spot

Do not over wet

Tap the dampened spot with bottom of putty knife to loosen fibers

Use clean towel to blot excess chemical, check for transfer to towel, repeat process if transfer of spot is visible on towel

Use another compatible spotter when transfer stops and stain or spot is still present

Place clean, dry towel on area and place heavy objects on towel to remove remaining stain, also helps reduce comeback of stain

Applying Enzyme Spotters:

Avoid inhaling vapors

Do not create dust or mist with these products

Avoid direct skin contact

Never allow the stain to dry while working with an enzyme spotter

Carpet should remain damp throughout cleaning process

Removing Gum:

Gum is removed from carpets with an aerosol or solvent remover

Pre-spraying Traffic Lanes:

Pretreat with traffic lane cleaner

WORK PROCEDURES:

ROTARY SHAMPOOING

One of the oldest methods of carpet cleaning

Used for deep cleaning of badly soiled carpeting

Uses a single disc floor machine with shampoo tank and nylon feed brush

Multiple disc machines provide additional brush agitation

Requires two steps - Machine agitation and wet vacuuming

Possible Problems: Over wetting and the inability to remove all of the loosened soil and shampoo

Some may require the solution to be dry before it can be removed

Others should be removed soon after they are applied

PROCEDURE

Vacuum area before cleaning, pre-spray spots with necessary spotting solution

Remove gum and other hardened substances

Prepare solution to the label-recommended dilution ratio

Fill tank or pump-up spray with the solution

Begin in one section of the carpeted area, spray on solution, or begin operating the machine and dispensing the solution

Work machine, going over spotted areas more than once

Scrub an area approximately 100 square feet before stopping to use the wet vacuum

Repeat process until area has been scrubbed and wet vacuumed

Allow to dry; Dry vacuum to remove remaining shampoo residue

If necessary, extract residual shampoo with a water extractor

WORK PROCEDURES:

BONNET CLEANING

Uses a fabric bonnet or pad on a floor machine similar to that used in rotary shampooing

Bonnet solution is applied only lightly

Less threat of over wetting

Three Procedures for Bonnet Cleaning Exist:

SPRAY-ON PROCEDURE

Vacuum entire carpeted area

Pre-spray spots with spotting solution and remove hardened substances

Properly dilute cleaning solution and fill pump-up sprayer

Mix a separate neutral detergent and water solution in a bucket and set aside

Mount bonnet pad onto floor machine

Spray a small amount of carpet cleaning solution from pump-up

sprayer onto bonnet and small area of the carpet

Scrub sprayed area of carpet with machine, cover spotted areas more than once

Remove bonnet, immerse it in bucket solution and wring out

to remove dirt and change bucket solution when dirty

Start next section by repeating steps 5-8

Vacuum entire area when dry

CARPET CLEANING SOLUTION IN MOP BUCKET

Vacuum entire carpeted area

Pre-spray spots with spotting solution and remove hardened substances

Properly dilute cleaning solution in a bucket, immerse bonnet pad and wring out to medium wetness

Place bonnet pad under floor machine and work section of carpet in one direction, flip bonnet pad over and agitate in other direction

Work in sections, repeating process until cleaning is complete

After entire area is dry, vacuum it

WORK PROCEDURES:

DRY FOAM EXTRACTION

Process combines detergent with water to create foam with a relatively low moisture level

Uses machine to apply foam to carpet just ahead of machine brush

Two procedures for dry foam extraction exist:

ONE-PASS DRY FOAM EXTRACTION

Vacuum area before cleaning

Pre-spray spots with spotting solution and remove hardened substances

Check extractor brush on machine to ensure it is securely attached and working

Fill machine solution tank, following label and/or machine manufacturer’s recommendations

Plug in machine and turn on foam generator

Let machine run a few minutes, allowing foam generator to

work and begin cleaning when head of foam forms

Move forward, maintaining foam head in front of machine

At end of an area, turn machine 180 degrees and go back,

overlapping the just-cleaned section by 3 inches

Complete one section, let dry and vacuum entire area

Check solution level periodically, never run foam generator without solution

WITHOUT BUILT-IN MACHINE PICKUP

Follow steps 1-5 outlined above

Begin cleaning by moving machine in a backward direction, allowing machine to leave agitated foam and soil behind

Continue until reaching end of machine’s first pass, turn machine 180 degrees and clean return pass, again moving the machine backward, overlapping the edge of previous pass

Check foaming agent’s product label to determine whether to wet-vac area or allow it to dry and vacuum

Repeat process on each section until entire area is clean

Check solution level

After drying and vacuuming, area can be reopened for use

WORK PROCEDURES:

DRY COMPOUND EXTRACTION

Dry compound extraction systems vary by make and model; however, dry compounds can be applied to carpets by any of the following four methods:

HAND-SPREADING PROCEDURE

Vacuum area before cleaning

Pre-spray spots with spotting solution and remove hardened substances

Measure the area to be covered and scatter the appropriate handfuls of dry compound evenly over entire space

With an agitation machine, work compound into carpet a small section at a time

After agitating, follow compound manufacturer’s recommendation for allowing compound to react with carpet and dirt, then vacuum

BARREL WHEEL SPREADER PROCEDURE

Follow steps 1 & 2 outlined above

Pour dry compound into spreader and open valve, begin rolling spreader along a carpet section

Agitate compound into carpet a small section at a time

Follow compound manufacturer’s recommendation for allowing compound to react with carpet and dirt, then vacuum
