The Joliet Junior College Fine Arts Department
About the JJC Fine Arts Program
Joliet Junior College is committed to students and
their pursuit of fine arts. The college demonstrated its
commitment to meeting students’ artistic needs by
providing space for learning and performing. In 2012,
the music program space tripled, adding classrooms,
a recording lab and much more. The theater program
is now enjoying the new Black Box Theatre to create
the perfect setting for more intimate productions, and
the Laura A. Sprague Art Gallery has three times the
space of its previous location.
Every year, the Fine Arts Department offers the
community a variety of entertainment and cultural
activities. With captivating theatre productions,
must-see art gallery openings and nationallyrecognized musical offerings, Joliet Junior College is
the cultural destination for residents both near and
far. For more information, call (815) 280-2223 or

20 feet from Stardom (2013)
The Field (2015)
Rated PG-13 • Sat., Oct. 17, 11 a.m.
Not Rated • Sat., Oct. 17, 4:30 p.m.
20 feet from Stardom (2013) is an energetic
documentary that has won an Academy Award in
addition to numerous other accolades. The film
addresses the creativity and persistence of some
of the finest (but often little-known and underappreciated) backup singers in contemporary popular
music. Music industry giants including Sheryl Crow,
Mick Jagger, Sting, and Stevie Wonder describe the
benefits of working with gifted performers such as
Darlene Love. With this film, familiar, though all too
frequently anonymous voices, will take the applause.
The Field (2015) will bring producer/director Tom
Desch to the Fine Arts Department Film Festival
for a second time. The proposed South Suburban
Airport, to be located near Peotone, is a subject of
continuing controversy for reasons including both
its economic and environmental impact. Desch has
been following members of the group STAND (Shut
This Airport Nightmare Down) since 2002, and his
film addresses landowners’ property rights, the use
of eminent domain by the Illinois Department of
Transportation, and the relationship between citizens
and government. (Not Rated)
Dave Nuccio, who teaches a course in music business
at JJC, will provide commentary for this film.
Life Itself (2014)
Desch has modified THE FIELD with regard to
recent relevant events, and it may be screened as a
continuing work in progress
Rated R • Sat., Oct. 17, 1:30 p.m.
Life Itself (2014) is a documentary tribute to the
legendary Chicago film critic Roger Ebert. The film
chronicles Ebert’s sometimes turbulent life, the
joy that came to him through marriage, and his
determination in facing the cancer that eventually
left him disfigured and took away his speaking voice.
Describing movies as being “like a machine that
generates empathy,” Ebert’s writings and his television
appearances became a platform through which he
advocated the role of filmmaking as a humane and
life enriching art form. Life Itself was directed by Steve
James, whose film, The Interrupters, was screened at
the first Fine Arts Department film Festival.
Films will be screened in the Joliet Junior
College Black Box Theatre, located on the
Main Campus in room K-1001.
Tickets are required but are free of charge.
Tickets may be obtained through the Joliet
Junior College Theatre Box Office, room K-1002.
Call (815) 280-2200 for more information.
The lobby area for the theatre will be open 30
minutes prior to each screening.
