2016 Schedule
1
Welcome to the University of Kentucky and K Week 2016!
We have been preparing for your arrival and are very excited that you are here. K Week, the fall welcome
week for all new students, is designed to make your transition to UK and to college life as smooth as
possible. In the following schedule, you will find a wide variety of sessions, events, and social activities to
help you get to know campus better, find answers to your questions, and make new friends. We want you to
have fun and learn about your new home!
Welcome Wildcats!
It is my pleasure to welcome you to your home away from home. During your time here, you will create
some of life’s greatest memories, build lasting relationships with your peers, and experience a world of
opportunity and growth.
Campus is undergoing a significant transition, but K Week will provide you with the best introduction to “seeing
blue” at the University of Kentucky. From navigating our beautiful campus as you find your first class to attending
events over the next several days, K Week is a crash-course in all things UK.
As you embark on this journey, take advantage of new possibilities and embrace different ideas. Over the next
several weeks, you will begin to make friends; meet faculty and staff; and spend time with alumni who walked
many of the same paths when they were students. Enjoy it and discover new communities that will support your
success as a student. You will also be challenged academically and socially – lean on your network, faculty,
staff, and friends to help you throughout your time on campus.
K Week is a great way to accelerate this exciting process and jump-start your academic career.
Mary Lynne and I look forward to seeing you around campus.
Welcome to the Big Blue Nation!

Hello Wildcats!
Welcome to the University of Kentucky. We are thrilled you’re finally here! The next chapter in your life officially
starts today, and there is no easier way to make that transition than K Week. In the following nine days there
are more than 150 events, sessions, and social activities planned, each one offering a unique and exciting
experience. Plus, with tons of free food and t-shirts, if you play your cards right you won’t pay for a meal or do
laundry for almost two weeks!
This 2016 K Week Schedule of Events is your guide to all of the awesome entertainment and socializing you can
handle. Take a few minutes to flip through these pages and check out all the cool events you won’t want to miss!
And if you find yourself a little lost (it happens!) or have questions, be sure to ask your friendly K Crew leader

K Teams
There’s no need to worry about who you will attend
K Week events with. All freshmen are assigned to a
K Team, a small group of 15-20 students led by a
member of the K Crew. If you came to UK without
knowing anyone, your K Team will be a group that
you can go to events with. Even if you came to UK
with a lot of friends from high school, going to events
with your K Team is the perfect opportunity
to branch out and meet new people.
You will meet at least five times
with your K Team:
- Friday, August 19 for
K Week Kick-off at 7 p.m.
- Saturday, August 20 before
Big Blue U at 6:30 p.m.
- Sunday, August 21 for
lunch at 12 p.m.
- Monday, August 22 for dinner and the Common Reading Experience
book discussion at 5 p.m.
- Tuesday, August 23 for a campus tour to
help you find your classes at 4:30 p.m.
Freshmen living on campus should have received
their K Team assignment by email over the summer.
Students who are uncertain about their K Team
assignment can check with K Week staff in the
residence hall lobbies during move-in hours on Friday.
Freshmen living off campus should check in on
Johnson Center Fields from 6 p.m. – 7 p.m. on Friday,
August 19 before the K Week Kick-off to receive a
K Team assignment. If you are a transfer student
and are interested in being assigned to a Transfer
K Team, you should also check in on Johnson Center
Fields at this time.
When you arrive on Johnson Center Fields on Friday
and Saturday evenings, look for your K Team number
on a sign. Your K Crew leader will be there waiting to
meet you and the rest of your K Team.

Tips for Making the Most of K Week
K Week is full of opportunities to get out, get involved, get informed, and explore
what awaits you here at UK. Completing the tasks in the checklist below will ensure
that you get your college experience off to a great start!
❑ When you’re not attending K Week events, spend time getting settled in your room.
Make it your home away from home. Don’t miss our Late-night Target Run on Sunday night for
those things you forgot!
❑ Review the K Week schedule each night to see what is going on the following day. Look for daily
emails with schedule highlights, too. You won’t want to miss all of the cool things coming up!
❑ Don’t hesitate to ask for help. Look for faculty, staff, and members of the K Crew throughout K Week.
We all remember what it is like to be new to UK.
❑ Get to know your roommate, your resident advisor (RA), your neighbors, your K Team, and the K Crew.
Begin building relationships with all the people you are going to be living with for the next nine months.
❑ Go to all your K Team meetings and as many other events as possible with your K Team.
Doing so will get you connected with new friends – and potential study partners,
dinner dates, and BFFs.
❑
Follow The Blueprint and read the K Book. Both of these publications are meant to help you in your
transition to UK. The Blueprint offers step-by-step details on how to be successful in your first year
at UK. The K Book is full of all the information that upperclass students think new students
need to know and touches on everything from academic tips to things to do in Lexington and
central Kentucky. Take advantage of all the information in both of these publications.
❑ Have fun!

K Week Information for UK Moms, Dads, and Families
Parents, family members, and other guests are invited to attend many of the sessions offered on Friday,
August 19, and Saturday, August 20, including the New Student Induction Ceremony, Parents and Families
Reception, and information sessions.
Welcome Parents, Guardians, and Families!
We’re excited that you are participating in K Week with your student. We think that all of you will enjoy the
experience. There will be some activities you can experience together and some that are meant just for you.
We understand that you probably have a long list of things to do to help your student get settled, but we hope
you’ll set aside the room preparations and errands to participate in K Week activities. Review the schedule,
and make note of the activities that interest you. You’ll certainly want to make plans to attend the New Student
Induction Ceremony where your student will officially join the UK community. Please note the required K Team
meetings on Friday and Saturday night and make sure your student is in attendance. We encourage you to
stop by the informal Parents and Families Reception on Friday night, August 19 to get to know UK administrators
and fellow UK families and hear brief remarks from UK President Eli Capilouto. Student-only activities begin at
6:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 20.
Enjoy K Week, and let us know if we can be of any assistance!

Parent and Family Tips for
Making the Most of K Week
-Review the schedule of events with your student. Make note of the
events your student is expected to participate in, and decide what
other events you want to attend.
- Encourage your student to take advantage of any of the optional
events that interest him/her.
- Don’t worry if your student doesn’t have everything needed for
his/her room. Remind your student to check out our Late-night Target run on Sunday night. Buses will take students to Target in Hamburg where they can stock up on snacks, school supplies, and more.
Parent and Family Tips for
the First Few Weeks of School
-Have you joined the UK Parent & Family Association? If not, it is not too late!
You can join at the Parents and Families Reception on Friday or you can visit
www.uky.edu/joinukpfa for a membership application and a complete list of member benefits. Joining the UK Parent & Family Association is a great way
to support your UK student and stay up-to-date on the latest campus activities!
-Is your student experiencing homesickness? Encourage him/her to reach out
to a K Team leader, RA, friend, or psychologist at UK’s Counseling Center. Homesickness is a common experience. Suggest things he/she can do to
make UK feel smaller: joining a student organization, talking to classmates,
and seeking additional opportunities to meet people.
-Encourage your student to spend as much time on campus as possible to
help get to know UK better, meet new people, and feel more comfortable.
As much as you may want to see your student, suggest that he/she not come home for a few weekends. Tell him/her to check the campus calendar to find out about all the events taking place. As much as you may be missing your student, don’t make him/her feel guilty about being here at UK. Encourage your Wildcat to take advantage of this opportunity to learn and grow.
