TravelingwithHardware:Whentravelingtomanyforeignlocations,certainitems
(includinglaptopcomputers)mustremainunder“effectivecontrol”ofthe
traveleratalltimeswhichisdefinedas:“retainingphysicalpossessionofitemor
keepingitsecuredinaplacesuchasahotelsafe,abondedwarehouse,oralocked
orguardedexhibitionfacility”.Ifyouneedtotakehigh‐techdevicestoforeign
locations,itisrecommendthatyoucheckwiththeOfficeofResearchIntegrityto
makesurethedevicecanlegallybeexportedtoyourdestination.
TravelingwithTechnicalData:Dependingonthelocationandtypeofdata,travelers
cannotpossess“controlledtechnicaldata”definedas“datarequiredforthe
design,fabrication,operation,ormaintenanceofmilitaryordual‐usetechnology
and,notinthepublicdomainorotherwiseexemptfromlicensing
requirements”.Generally,thiscouldincludeanyproprietarydata.Thebest
adviceistonottraveltoforeignlocationswithacomputerthatcontainsany
confidentialorsensitivedata.
