Hello there my
dear parishioners
and friends!
The Solemnity of the Assumption of the BVM is
on Monday this year. Since it falls on Monday, the
Bishops of the United States, about 20 years ago, declared that Holydays that fall on Friday, Saturday or
Monday do not have the obligation to attend Mass. So,
that is why there will only be an 8 AM Mass that day in
the St Vincent de Paul Chapel on Holy Ghost campus.
So what is the Solemnity of the Assumption? Our Byzantine brothers and sisters call it the Solmenity of the
Holy Dormition of Our Lady. It is the day where we
celebrate that our Lady fell asleep and not wanting His
mother to undergo the corruption that death would
bring it, brought Our Lady body and soul into the heavenly realm. We are so thankful for this day because she
still comes to us over these 21 centuries to give us
messages from Her Son. Are we listening?
It was because of her role as Mother of the Son of
God that she was given two unique privileges: 1) her
Immaculate Conception and consequent sinlessness;
and 2) the preservation from bodily corruption at the
end of her earthly life, i.e. her ASSUMPTION. For this
and more, Romanticist William Wordsworth (1770-1850)
immortalized her in his poem, THE VIRGIN as “our nature’s solitary boast”.
In praise, wonder, humility and thanksgiving
Mary marveled at her own miraculous maternity! Her
song of praise or “canticle”, the MAGNIFICAT, is found
only in Luke’s Gospel, 1:46-55: “My soul proclaims the
greatness of the Lord…” The Eastern Churches call it
the “Ode of the Theotokos” (the God-Bearer). The MAGNIFICAT is one of three canticles the Church prays/
sings daily in her official prayer, the Liturgy of the
Hours. It is integral to Evening Prayer. Zachary’s song,
uttered upon the recovery of his speech at the naming
of his infant son, John the Baptist, is called The
“Benedictus”: “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel…” (Luke 1:68-79). It is part of Morning Prayer. The
“Nunc Dimittis” is the canticle of Simeon who eagerly
awaited the coming of the Messiah, and to whom the
Holy Spirit revealed His arrival in the arms of Mary on
the occasion of her ritual purification and the Child’s
Presentation in the Temple: “Lord, now You let your
servant go in peace…my own eyes have seen the salvation …the glory of Your People, Israel…” (Luke 2:29-32)
It is prayed at night.

Cont…. The MAGNIFICAT is typical of Israel’s
songs of praise in its structure and content, e.g. its
use of ‘synonymous parallelism’: “My soul proclaims…my spirit rejoices…). The third stanza repeats this, but with opposites, “scattered the proud…
lifted the lowly” and “filled the hungry…sent the rich
away empty”.
So, as we celebrate the 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time
this weekend, let us also take some time to celebrate
Mary, that Ordinary Woman who said YES to God and
God rewarded her with the blessings of Heaven. May
you be blessed this day and always as we consecrate,
in some small way, our life’s pattern on her life!
God Bless, Fr. Cliff
