Students learn more when they use probeware! Traditional labs often require days of data collection and complex procedures where measurements are several steps removed from the actual phenomenon. By integrating probeware into your biology lab, students can get data faster and make concept connections easier with direct measurements. With PASCO’s Advanced Biology Solution, you can: AMeasure cellular respiration using Carbon Dioxide and Oxygen Gas sensors. AQuickly quantify enzymatic reactions using a Pressure Sensor or Colorimeter. ABring the textbook to life with PASCO’s Diffusion/Osmosis Apparatus. Using PASCO probeware creates more time for quantitative inquiry! Most of the labs in PASCO’s Advanced Biology Manual can be finished in one or two lab periods, leaving more time for student extensions and inquiry. Using PASCO probeware saves time and money in AP* Biology. By using the same data collection system, students can focus on the concepts and the scientific method, rather than the procedure. PASCO’s labs were created with an emphasis on efficiency, so you can invest in equipment instead of consumables! Your old lab setup vs. PASCO’s solution What AP* Biology Students Gain When They Use PASCO Probeware… A They become actively engaged in constructing science concepts. A They produce real-time graphs, which allow them to explore concepts not normally performed in the science classroom. A They use more sophisticated techniques and equipment that reflect real-world methods used in the lab. A Their learning is enhanced with hands-on, interactive data collection and analysis. A They have more opportunities to predict, question, and apply science concepts. A Both teachers and students benefit from more efficient use of valuable class time. Mitochondrial Genetics Kit BP-6946 Includes: QuickStrip™ DNA samples (6 strips), containing Standard DNA Marker (40 mL) and DNA Samples (40 mL each) UltraSpec-Agarose™ powder (3.0 g) Electrophoresis Buffer 50x (60 mL) InstaStain™ Blue Card (6) Graduated Transfer Pipet (1) Transfer Pipet (10); and student lab activity An Affordable Kit for Studying Genetics and Biotechnology Some diseases in organs with high energy demands – such as the eyes, liver, pancreas, kidneys, and heart – are the result of mutations in mitochondrial DNA. In this inquirybased activity, students discover how a mitochondrial disease is inherited and diagnosed. (Activity jointly created by PASCO, the Carnegie Institution for Science, GENA, the Smithsonian Institute, and the University of Alabama.) This lab uses molecular techniques to answer a question about how a mitochondrial disease is inherited and diagnosed. The lab consists of two essential activities: pedigree construction from patient case histories, and molecular analysis of a point mutation in the mitochondrial genome. Students use restriction endonuclease digests and agarose gel electrophoresis to diagnose an inherited mitochondrial disease. They construct pedigrees from patient case histories and correlate patterns of inheritance with molecular diagnosis. Finally, they investigate the relationship between mitochondrial DNA and nuclear DNA in the synthesis of the protein complexes of the electron transport chain. Electrophoresis Classroom Set Diffusion/Osmosis Kit SE-7239 ME-6942 Featured in the April 2012 issue of American Biology Teacher The Electrophoresis Classroom Set includes everything you need for six lab groups to conduct the mitochondrial genetics lab. Practice pipetting year after year using the DuraGel and measuring gels with the MtDNA GelSizer before using valuable consumables in the lab. Get fast results for two groups using the Dual Electrophoresis Apparatus by running two 7x7 gels simultaneously. The U-shaped tube of the Diffusion/Osmosis Apparatus consists of two separate columns connected by a semi-permeable dialysis membrane. Osmotic movement of water across the membrane causes measurable changes in pressure and volume.
