Accounting and Finance
Angel Financing in Asia Pacific addresses this knowledge gap by approaching the
subject matter from two angles. First, from a journalistic angle, it aims to capture
the current status and recent developments in a number of countries or territories in
Asia. In each country report, the respective author(s) trace the background, trends,
and future outlook for technology and innovation driven developments and related
angel investment activities. The second part of the book takes a more analytical and
prescriptive angle to the subject: making recommendations, providing analysis, and
suggesting new approaches to start-up financing in the Asia Pacific region.

Tribal Wisdom for Business Ethics
Editor
Grace Ann Rosile
New Mexico State University, USA
In this ground-breaking new book, leading native and non-native scholars present
a fascinating view of American Indian tribal values and indigenous cultures. Long
before Columbus, American Indians had trading routes all across the Americas.
How did they maintain this extensive network of trading relationships through the
centuries?
‘Tribal Wisdom’ offers an ethic of business practice that is relationship-based and
community-oriented, fostering a harmonious web of life which includes the natural
environment. Many of these traditions have shaped daily conduct in business and
personal life among Native Americans for centuries and today the wider business
world could find use from relating these tribal values to both ethics and sustainability.
This will be essential reading for professionals, practitioners and scholars across the
business world.

BRICS Economies
Author
Akhilesh Chandra Prabhakar
Universiti Utara Malaysia, Malaysia
By using empirical understanding and new policy data, this important new title
investigates the world-wide economic crisis.
The global recession has had a truly international reach, with repercussions
reverberating throughout nations and across societies. The book examines the
overall causes of the crisis and the failures of mainstream economics, and analyses
the rising tide of poverty and social inequality resulting from the recession. It also
examines the relationship between the crisis and economic systems, and examines
the evolution of the global monetary system and history of central banking. Finally, it
delves into BRICS with a particular focus on China and India, as well as Europe and

Contesting Institutional Hegemony in Today’s
Business Schools
Doctoral Students Speak Out
Editor
Ajnesh Prasad
EGADE Business School, Monterrey Institute of Technology and
Higher Education, Mexico
By bringing together a group of critically-orientated early career researchers from
global business schools, this book investigates a series of timely questions relating to
the impact that institutional pressures have on junior academics – particularly those
who conduct critical or non-mainstream research:
• What is the nature of the institutional pressure that is placed upon doctoral
students to publish in certain journals or conduct positivist research?
• How do students with a critical orientation resist these pressures – or why do they
succumb to them?
Contesting Institutional Hegemony in Today’s Business Schools: Doctoral
Students Speak Out takes a narrative approach and is required reading for
all doctoral students as well as those in academia dissatisfied with the current
intellectual hegemony in business schools.

This new title discusses the rationale for, and design of, the first ‘Business Education
Jam’, an initiative reviewing key challenges facing business education and
articulating a vision for how the role and delivery of business education could be
reimagined.
Reimagining Business Education: Insights and Actions from the First Business
Education Jam is critically important during a time when business schools, as
an industry, struggle to identify the innovations necessary to meet the needs of a
changing world. The Jam was the first open platform for dialogue of its kind for
business education and continues to make an impact, including: use by schools and
deans around the world to guide strategic planning efforts; program directors as they
drive innovation in their programs; and industry executives as they identify ways to
better engage with business education.
This book takes this collaborative effort a step further to break down traditional
models and structures as we seek to reimagine the future of business education in a
more open and connected world.

Innovation is critical to growth and development in Africa. In the context of
a continent characterised by fast growing economies as well as an array of
socioeconomic challenges, such as high levels of poverty and inequality, innovation
in Africa must be understood in an encompassing manner. Africa needs to support
the emergence of its own Silicon Valleys, but it must also foster the invention and
adoption of cleaner technologies that limit respiratory illnesses, deforestation and
combat climate change.

This book contains a number of analytical case studies that examine the nature and
origins of emerging high-end innovation hubs in Africa. These hubs or ecosystems
are both understudied and little known inside, and outside, the continent. With this
analysis, the book highlights and draws lessons from some of the most promising
and successful innovation cases in Africa today, exploring the key factors driving
their successful emergence, growth and future prospects. Relevant for scholars,
policy makers, and business leaders, the book provides both inspiration and useful
policy advice that can inform strategies and concrete measures to speed up the pace
of innovation in Africa today.

Organizing Disaster
The Construction of Humanitarianism
A volume in the Emerald Series
Critical Management Studies
Author
Adam Rostis
This book challenges the taken-for-granted status of organisations such as the
Red Cross and Medecins Sans Frontieres, by problematising humanitarianism.
Such organisations can be selective of the type of suffering that receives attention
- empirical studies of humanitarianism note that the suffering it purports to alleviate
is increasing although aid is now highly organised, funded, and globalized.
These observations inform the key question of the book: what purpose does the
humanitarian organization serve?
Rostis explores this question, focusing on the European colonial era and the Biafra
War. The role of colonialism in the humanitarian organisation is made apparent, and
facilitates an interpretation of the results of inquiry using postcolonial theory.
This unique contribution to organisation studies re-reads humanitarianism to show
that humanitarian organisations essentially serve as global disciplinary institutions.
It will be essential reading for scholars in political science, international sociology,
organisation studies, international affairs and organisational communication.

A new version of the total historical development of organization is needed, and
Organization Theory: Critical and Philosophical Engagements meets that
need by directly using the historical sources of organisation, instead of offering a
secondary reading of the classics. The book also illustrates how turns in social and
cultural history intertwine with the changes in philosophical assumptions and social
theoretical paradigms, without resorting to a simplified linear narrative.
This book will be essential reading for all scholars in critical management studies,
and those wishing to broaden and update their knowledge of contemporary
organisation theory.

Executive Burnout
Eastern and Western Concepts, Models and Approaches for
Mitigation
Authors
Radha R. Sharma
Management Development Institute, India
Sir Cary Cooper
Never before has the world witnessed the phenomenon of severe stress and burnout
on such a large scale as in recent years. Globalisation, technological advances and
economic meltdown have brought about a plethora of unprecedented challenges for
industry and organisations across the globe. Consequently, executives have been
under growing stress due to economic uncertainties, mergers and acquisitions,
role erosion and restructuring, resulting in increased workloads, longer hours and
demands for greater productivity and efficiency. This changing environment has
created job insecurity, anxiety, dissatisfaction and emotional exhaustion causing a
rapid increase in executive burnout.

This book provides the most comprehensive analysis of the construct of burnout,
including its magnitude, a global research review, a typology of models, comparisons
between professions and consequences of burnout for individuals and organisations.
In addition, it provides the views of mental health professionals, empirically derived
causes, symptoms and coping techniques, while throwing light on preventative
measures and comparing Eastern and Western approaches to mitigate the effects of
burnout.

New Ways of Working Practices: Antecedents and Outcomes
Advertising in New Formats and Media
Current Research and Implications for Marketers
Editor
Patrick de Pelsmacker
University of Antwerp, Belgium
The advertising industry has undergone a rapid transformation in recent years. New
communication technologies such as live streaming, gaming, social media, online
brand communities and blogs have given advertisers new platforms to communicate
and promote their messages. Two remarkable phenomena are apparent, often in
combination: interactivity in online communication; and integration of editorial and
commercial content.
Marketing
Academic research is increasingly focusing on these new techniques and formats,
how they work, and how consumers are affected by or respond to them. This book
makes an important contribution to the field of advertising by bringing together
state-of-the-art insights with an examination of how the techniques work. The
book is split into three sections: The Changing Advertising Universe; Advertising in
a Digital Connected World; and Hidden but Paid for: Branded Content. The book
provides conceptual overviews, discusses recent academic literature, reports new
research, and develops viewpoints on the key issues. Together, it provides a valuable
overview of insights into modern advertising practice for advertising academics and
practitioners alike.

Synopsis
Volume 25 discusses strategies to avoid the conventional, and still dominant logic
of using symmetric thinking and multiple regression analysis and to make use of
asymmetric thinking, complexity theory tenets, and qualitative comparative analysis
(QCA) to achieve more useful forecasts of what is possible and likely to happen.
Asymmetric modelling formally recognizes that the configurations of causes of
undesirable outcomes are not the mirror opposites of the configurations of causes of
desirable outcomes. QCA tools enable researchers and decision-makers to move away
from thinking of relative sizes of influences of independent variables to ask the better
question: what conditions come together that cause great outcomes to occur? The
authors also describe how to build models that consistently produce undesirable/bad
outcomes.
Making Tough Decisions Well and Badly: Framing, Deciding,
Implementing, Assessing
Advances in Business Marketing and Purchasing
Volume 24
Edited by
Arch G. Woodside, Boston College, USA
Synopsis
Where do brilliant executive wisdom and actions come from? Making Tough Decisions
Well and Badly (MTDWB) assesses the literature that examines executives’ conscious
and non-conscious actions in decision making, implementation and assessment of
outcomes. MTDWB includes anecdotal histories of good and bad decisions and the
executives who made them. This volume uncovers the common threads in framing,
forecasting, decision making and actions, looking at Steve Jobs, Martin Luther King,
Jr, Senator Wayne Morris, Winston Churchill, Abraham Lincoln, Sam Walton, Mahatma
Gandhi, and Bill Gates. MTDWB assesses ten valuable decision making tools such as
checklists and coaches; and tools to avoid such as use of product portfolio paradigms
and use of fit-only regression analysis, that appear often in the popular business and
academic literature on making tough decisions.

Mastering Digital Transformation
Towards a Smarter Society, Economy, City and Nation
Editor
Nagy K. Hanna
Senior Advisor, U.S. Department of State and University of
Witwatersrand, South Africa
Some countries have mastered the process of digital transformation, and continue
to realise substantial economic benefits. Others have made substantial investments
in ICT infrastructure with marginal impact. What makes for these differences among
countries?
Organization Studies
The author presents a systematic approach to integrating ICT into development
policies and programs across various sectors of the economy and society. This book
bridges the current disconnect between the ICT specialists and their development
counterparts, in order to harness the ongoing ICT revolution, maximise development
impact and minimise downside risks. Posing a holistic and strategic framework for
national leaders and development practitioners interested in moving from vision to
action, this book is also an important work for researchers and students of ICT who
aim to pursue innovative, inclusive and sustainable development paradigms.

Bad to Good: Achieving High Quality Impact in Your Research covers 24 common
bad practices in theory construction and empirical testing and provides readers with
the tools to turn these into good practices.
For decades, scholars have bemoaned the low relevancy and impact of most
research in the leading journals in business, management, and marketing. The
majority of the research that gets published, perhaps 70% of it, hardly has any
measurable scholarly impact in terms of citations. Rather than low relevancy, this
book speculates that the deeper issue is the pervasive use of bad research practices
appearing in most articles in almost all ranked journals in the sub-disciplines of
business.

Gender and Race Matter: Global Perspectives on Being a Woman

ISSN
1529-2126
ISBN print
9781786350381

Synopsis
Gender inequality persists in most countries and although it appears that we have a
long way to go, this collection contributes to a feminist scholarship that highlights a
destabilising of established patterns of behaviour and gender relations. It acknowledges
the multiplicity of discrimination but locates women at the centre of a dialogue and
presents key interventions in gender and race matters. For the contributors, gender
serves as an analytical framework and covers the experiences of women in different
global settings related to education, political activism, corporeal violence, identity,
sexuality, and poverty. The use of poetry and literature provides a powerful voice for
women against exclusion and recognises their contribution to society. This collection
is innovative in not only relating experiential evidence but also putting forward how
women are able to challenge oppression through circumventing rules, roles, obligations
and prejudice through a powerful agency.

International Perspectives on Crowdfunding
Positive, Normative and Critical Theory
Editors
Jérôme Méric
University of Poitiers, France
Isabelle Maque
University of Poitiers, France
Julienne Brabet
University of Poitiers, France
Crowdfunding as an entrepreneurial phenomenon substitutes traditional sources
of finance (banks, financial markets, governments) for the crowd. Socially and
economically, it is challenging the traditional boundaries that have been set for
centuries between industry, the financial sector, and the public. Though its basic
principle cannot be considered as a radical innovation, crowdfunding as a rapidly
growing practice calls for renewed management, legal, and governance patterns.

The Strategically Networked Organization
Leveraging Social Networks to Improve Organizational
Performance
Author
Hanna Lehtimäki
University of Eastern Finland, Finland
The Strategically Networked Organization: Leveraging Social Networks to
Improve Organizational Performance demonstrates to managers the strategic
significance of intra-organisational social networks, and argues that strategic
management is embedded in the complexity of social relations that shape the
strategic direction of a company.
Strategy
Currently there are few tools available to systematically collect information about
the social functioning of an organisation. This book fills this gap by shifting attention
to the social relations that contribute to strategic advantage and that build on
relationships that provide unique resources and create value for the business. It
considers three perspectives on how social networks have a strategic function: first,
social networks constitute everyday strategic action; second, social networks convey
cultural meanings; and third, how social networks depict social processes that
continually illustrate what the organisation is and what it can become.
This essential new title shows top and upper-middle management how cultivating an
understanding of intra-firm social relations can help them to build unique strategic
advantage and make use of the day-to-day knowledge that emerges in the social
connections and interactions within an organisation.

Strategic Thinking
A Comprehensive Guide
Author
Frederick Betz
Portland State University, USA
By using actual histories of business successes and failures to illustrate theoretical
concepts in strategic thinking, this book provides a fully comprehensive and practical
view of the issues and current debates in leadership strategic thinking.
Leadership and strategy are intricately connected – it is a crucial responsibility of any
leader to formulate strategy, and in an organisation, only the leader has the power to
implement strategic change.
Strategic thinking requires both idealism and realism – to imagine a better world,
and to acquire the resources, skills and organisation to get there. However, most
organisations focus on short-term thinking for their employees and leave long-term
strategy to the executives. But no high-level executive in any organisation has full
scope of operations – thus, for realistic strategy, there is a need for good top-down
and bottom-up communication. When organisational communication is only topdown, high-level strategy can become only wishful thinking by the CEO.

Traffic Safety and Human Behavior
Second Edition
Editor
David Shinar
Ben Gurion University of the Negev, Israel
Traffic crashes are one of the ten leading causes of deaths worldwide, and the
leading cause of death for young people in the western world - a seemingly
necessary evil that accompanies increasing levels of motorisation. In this
comprehensive second edition of the classic Traffic Safety and Human Behavior,
Shinar provides a theoretical framework and a critical evaluation of the most recent
research findings to comprehend the complexity of traffic safety and the central role
that road users - drivers, motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians play in it.
In this new edition, Shinar covers the key issues that relate human behavior to
traffic safety and the impact that cultural, policy, and technological changes have on
them. In particular, the new edition covers the increasing roles that pedestrians and
cyclists have in the traffic system and the need to accommodate them; the intrusion
of infotainment and its role in driver distraction; and the increasing role of crashprevention and driver assistance systems in changing the driver-vehicle interaction.

ePrints
Pay-Per-View options are available on all eBook Series Chapters from Emerald’s
website.
ePrints provide you with the option of hosting a PDF of an Emerald eBook
chapter or article on your website or intranet. You can choose either a read-only
version (i.e. non-printable) for a set period of time or you can choose a printable
option and set the number of reprints required. These are perfect for conferences
or promoting your work.
If you wish to view an eBook chapter for your own personal reading and to which
you do not have subscribed access, then you can use our online Pay-Per-View
Download service. You will know if you do not have access to the chapter as
a little padlock will appear to the left-hand side of the search results and in the
orange box on the chapter abstract page there will be an option to “Purchase
this document”.
If you wish to order ePrints, simply head to the Emerald website, search for the
content required and click on the “Reprints and permissions” link.
How to Use Emerald’s Pay-Per-View option
Reprints
1. Search for the article you require by using our search facilities
(www.emeraldinsight.com)
Emerald has teamed up with Rightslink to offer standard reprints. Articles
are reprinted exactly as they appear in the original journal. You can also add
customised covers which include your company adverts, logos and contact
details or details from your professional résumé.
2. Click on either HTML or PDF
3. In the orange box click on “Purchase this document”
4. You will then be asked to create an account and input your login details.
